Time Magazine and THAT cover ... what do you think?

Rate this Entry

If Time Magazine's goal was to create discussion they have certainly achieved it with this month's cover.

If you haven't seen it it shows an almost-four-year-old standing on a small chair breastfeeding from his mother.

It is very staged (as are all magazine covers) and deliberately confronting in it's use of pose, eye contact and clothing (they want to sell copies after all!).

See for yourself ...

The magazine article - Meet Dr Bill Sears, the man who ramade motherhood - is about the rise in attachment parenting. It asks the question: are some mothers taking his advice too far?

Now, we all know that breastmilk is the best thing for baby - and we also know that it can be a tough slog and sometimes life just doesn't work out that way.

It's important to promote breastfeeding but are staged images like this detrimental to the cause?

Wouldn't it be better if we saw more not-so-staged breastfeeding images - and more breastfeeding in real life - so that it is seen as what it is and should be ... a normal, natural way to nourish a growing human being?

I have seen enough "Us VS Them" with regards to mothers attitudes towards breastfeeding, to think that this is only going to perpetuate this conflict. As we know mothers have a hard enough time without adding criticsm of each other and pressure from the media into the mix. I look at this cover and all I think is it is a ploy to sell magazines rather than something of any journalistic merit.

Breastfeeding should be about nourishing your child. It should be soft and loving and caring and beautiful. This photo, to me, is all about defiance. I can't really see anything loving in it at all.
