Film Review: Trishna
Any Thomas Hardy fans out there? Trishna is a smart adaptation of Hardy's intriguing novel about sex, class, and industry, but set in modern-day India. Directed by Michael Winterbottom (A Mighty Heart) and starring the ultra-stunning Freida Pinto (Slumdog Millionaire), the film follows Trishna, a sweet, unassuming daughter living in rural Rajasthan. She meets handsome, Jay (Riz Ahmed), who lures away from her simple existence with promises of love, success, and fulfillment. Exclusions of class and gender inevitably creep into their relationship, eventually leading to the bitter downward spiral of their union.
Half romance, half tragedy, the film is beautifully shot and crafted. Definitely worth a look if you looking for something more engaging than the usual churned-out cinematic fodder.
