I have had a To Do for ages that I must change utility service providers. I had been on a couple of those websites which allow you to compare plans by inserting your post code and your usage, and according to those sites at least, I was being WAY overcharged.
Finally with a few hours (you will need them), I took the following steps:
1. logged on to a 'compare your utilities' website and did some basic research
2. chose the best looking new plan for me for both Gas and Electricity
3. looked up the 'new' service provider and called them. I explained to the sales guy that I was looking to shift my service. He needed my address, current usage, current provider and current charges. He went away and spent some time with his calculator (or perhaps just twiddled his thumbs) and than came back promptly offering me a 6% discount on all bills (if I paid on time) aswell as cheaper service and usage rates. Wow - good start!
4. I then rang my current provider and advised I was planning to move (which I actually was, 6% was a massive saving). They asked me what quote I had been provided and by whom and then said that they would call me back and asked (very politely) that I not change suppliers until they had a chance to come back to me with the quote. No worries. Show me the dollars....
5. half an hour later my current provider called me back and offered me 12% off every electricity bill and every gas bill.
Are you kidding? I asked. No. We are not kidding, they responded.
I did not have to go through the hassel of changing providers and, having done the sums, I am very happily now saving $900 a year! Not bad for a few hours work!
So, put the time aside and make a few calls, you will be glad you did!
Now, how to spend $900....
