The first time I saw Finding Nemo on the big screen was nine years ago when my husband and I were touring Wales. We'd stopped in Cardiff for a few nights and decided to pop out and see a movie in the town centre, and of all the choices available at the box office, the latest Disney animated spectacular was clearly the outstanding option. This was in an old life pre-kids, but the great thing about Disney (in case you hadn't noticed) was that you don't need to be a kid to fall in love with a Disney film. We figured that Finding Nemo was a pretty safe bet.

I still remember the moment when the cinema lights quietly dimmed and the very first screen image faded up from black, illuminating a window into the dazzling metropolis that sparkles just beneath the surface of our very own Great Barrier Reef. It took my breath away; I don't think I had ever seen anything so majestic, so gloriously bright and colourful. In fact, I struggled to remember if the Reef itself looked anywhere near as striking during the many visits I had enjoyed there as a child.

From that opening frame I was entranced. Spellbound. And to this day I still marvel about the effect seeing this film had on me at the time. But even though it did make me homesick, it also made for some great "I can speak Wa-hales" jokes during the rest of our holiday.

Three kids later and I reckon I've seen Finding Nemo on DVD more times than I could count, so I wasn't sure how significant seeing that so-familiar film on the big screen again would be. But wow - who knew that magic could strike twice? Now in 3D, Finding Nemo is even more beautiful, more breathtaking, and more detailed than I'd have dreamed. Everything is so vibrant and vivid that it feels like you're watching it from a submarine or a glass-bottomed boat. Of all the times I've seen this film I have never felt so close to the action - especially when Bruce made his rather ominous appearance!

The best part of seeing Finding Nemo was meeting up with a friend and his family who were taking their daughter to the cinema for the very first time. They weren't sure how she would handle the cinema experience - sitting still for so long, or being overwhelmed by the size of the screen - but she was transfixed from start to finish. I didn't say it to them at the time, but Finding Nemo had a poignant effect on me when I saw it for the first time all those years ago. Deep down I hope that one day their little girl will look back and remember the magic she felt when she saw the first frame of her first film at the cinema for the first time. I hope and wonder that one day she will look back on the experience and remember just how much seeing Finding Nemo captivated her, just as it once captured the little girl inside me.

My fav two online boutiques (which deliver = extra browny points for being so easy!) are:

1. Hootkid - www.hootkid.com

Offering unique and chic stylish apparel, I love dipping into this website to splurge on toddler fashion. They have some really cute items and are definitely worth having a browse when looking for something cool and classic.

2. Huckleberry Lane - www.huckleberrylane.com

This online store does super stylish sleepwear. It's well-made and last ages. My son has these pyjamas and they are baby soft and comfy. Plus I love the look of them (especially the 'Huckleberry Lane' waistband). All without a garish cartoon character in sight ...

Where do you shop online?

Dazzling special effects and animation make Total Recall incredible to watch, but if you are hoping that it revisits the fantasy world of the 1990 version, then expect to be disappointed. This rendition is vastly different from its predecessor, with no sign of Arnold Schwarzenegger anywhere - not even a cameo!

Colin Farrell plays Douglas Quaid the protagonist this time around who learns that he is really an undercover spy. He must find out who he is and what his purpose is before a whole community gets destroyed by a corrupt politician determined to rebuild society.

Farrell does a mighty fine job as the hero on the run, and Kate Beckinsale is amazing as his wife. The biggest let-down of the film is the storyline which doesn't really go anywhere, but if you see this for the striking visuals and the great acting from Farrell (not to mention his rather fine looking abs) then you'll be totally satisfied.

Hello Mamas With Style, I am back in the land of the living with my now five-month-old tot doing very well indeed and my three-year-old lapping up being a big brother. Life is rather fantastic I have to admit, even in amongst the sleep deprivation and crazy schedule. I think I have started to get it kinda sussed, but we shall see - kidlets just love to change it up on you, don't they?

Physically, I am good. I am back in my jeans and skinnying down just nicely - you have gotta love breastfeeding for that. But in doing so, it has taken a while - I had a c-section and I also suffered a separation of muscles - but I am happy to say I am getting my flat stomach back once again. Oh yes, just in time for summer!

Want to know how I did it?

I have a little secret.

They're not glamorous or sexy, but what they are is an absolute lifesaver.

They are SRC Recovery Shorts.

Yep, these little hotties have well and truly been one of my best investments recovery-wise. Recommended to me by my physio before I had Finn, I somewhat reluctantly invested, wondering whether I would in fact ever find myself donning such beauties, but I can honestly say I have hardly actually been caught WITHOUT them on since having Finn!

Pulling me in (and my muscles back together) I have worn them night and day from perhaps a week or two after my c-section until now and they have:

a) protected my scar when wearing jeans etc and made me feel really supported (which is very comforting when so tender);
b) helped pull my muscles back together; and
c) flattened my scar and stomach together (I have no 'overhang' whatsoever).

I really think they are a fabulous bit of kit for the stomach after childbirth. Plus having had a c-section, they were so comfy as the material is super stretchy.

So there it is ladies. My big knicker-wearing secret is out. But I am loud. I am proud. Just don't tell the boys.

Currently making its way around the circuit in Australia is Tom Carroll's incredible documentary film, Storm Surfers 3D. The film tracks Tom and bestie Ross Clarke-Jones as they scour the seas in search of the gnarliest waves to conquer. What is meant to be a simple insight into the beauty, drama, and allure of surfing becomes a stunning insight into ambition, friendship, fatherhood and the thrill of daring to dream. Even if you aren't a surfie chick/dude, there is so much to enjoy about Storm Surfers 3D, not least the breath-taking, stomach-churning cinematography. This amazing piece of Australiana is touring the country now before heading off to the Toronto International Film Festival. See it while you can - tour dates and special appearances by Tom and Ross are listed on the Storm Surfers 3D website.
Farm stays typically have plenty of animals for children to interact with as well as a range of family-friendly fun activities on site. The farm-stays here have all been recommended by members of the 365 Things to do with Kids in Perth Facebook page and are listed in order of driving time from Perth – if your favourite one is not here please comment and let me know! Please note that the driving times from Perth are approximate and assume no toilet breaks which, let’s face it, is a rather unrealistic expectation with small bladders. I would add at least 30 minutes and 2 stops for every 2 hours. For some great tips on packing a car for a family drive have a look here, and for some car games to save you endless 'are we there yet?' questions have a look here!

I finished reading a lovely book today which I'd like to recommend to you. Set in post-911 Connecticut, The Unfinished Journals of Elizabeth D is by American mum and author, Nichole Bernier, and deals with some delicate, moving issues surrounding motherhood, friendship, secrets, and loss.

The story follows Kate Spenser, who is bequeathed a trunk of her close friend's journals after her death, together with a note telling her that she will 'know what to do' with them. Kate reads them, and discovers that there is way more to her friend than she could have ever imagined, prompting her to wonder if she ever really knew Elizabeth at all. With the 911 attacks still fresh in her memory, Kate begins to question her own sense of morality and sincerity, while learning how precious and arbitrary life can be.

In many ways, The Unfinished Journals of Elizabeth D is a beautiful read, not least for its acute sense of understanding of family, friendship, and the pain associated with losing a family member. Elizabeth was mum to three children--just like I am--so the idea of dying suddenly, leaving behind my husband and kids was quite resonating for me. It is something that I couldn't bear to think about it happening, so I found it brave of the author to tackle such a difficult subject.

As for the idea of reading a friend's journals....I don't know. Would I do it? Probably, especially if I had been asked to do so as a last request. What would you do? I'd love to know what you think.
Size: 20.9 KB" />Take Lauren Jackson and her genuine surprise and obvious reverence at being selected to carry the Australian flag at the opening ceremony - there was no arrogance, no expectation, no tantrums, no embarressing behaviour. Just genuine happiness at the honour.

Take Liz Cambage and her 'slam dunk', her enthusiasm for promoting the game of basketball to all Australian kids and her tweeting (:)).

All of my kids play basketball and I was pleasantly surprised that my boys were equally excited at watching the Opals play as the Boomers - they knew the players, they knew their signature moves and there is absolutely no mention about 'boys being better'.

Love it.

I am accused of being tight by people because I don't waste money in the same way they do - this doesn’t worry me but actually being stingy, scungy, whatever is not good for anyone. I am talking about little or big things you can do which may impact negatively on other people’s lives or your own, involves fraud, setting a bad example for your children or is just plain stealing.

You often see streaks of this behaviour in the newly frugal, filling up their pockets with sugar sachets beyond their needs, filling rooms with egg cartons for reuse (but they somehow never are used for anything- great for lighting wood heaters though!) and signing up for as many samples of everything they can knowing full well the samples will go to waste and they were never interested in the product in the first place.

It's easy to fall into when you start trying to save money with zeal! This doesn't sit well with my ideology. I am frugal and thrifty but I believe in the essential abundance of the universe (bear with me here - not going too hippy on you I promise), these actions come from a different place. One of believing that you have to grab everything you can or someone else will get it and that there isn't enough for everyone. Your thrift and frugality should sit well in your life. It should fulfill a genuine want or need you have and when done it should enhance your life and not detract from other people's (except when those other people want you to spend money in an unwise way and they directly benefit from it!).

Example: Taking lots of samples of products you will never buy and don't even want because they are free! The result: company stops giving samples for those genuinely interested as it costs too much money and does not result in an increase if sales. This is bad for other people who are genuinely interested in the product and would like a sample and bad for the company who loses money and doesn't make any extra. It is also bad for the environment when you just throw the pointless samples away.

Example: Taking the TV guide from the office newspaper after checking with the administration manager. Result: You get a TV guide which no one else was going to use and was just going to be recycled, you save money on not buying the paper you weren't interested in and there is one less paper to deal with waste wise. No obvious negative effect.

There are lots of other examples but I just wanted to get you thinking, being stingy is a negative thing but being frugal can be a life-enhancing one, growing your own vegies is frugal and life enhancing, stealing your neighbour's paper first thing in the morning (or their Meals on Wheels which I have heard of!) is not - it is stingy and wrong … I'd bet you can think of some more pertinent and subtle examples (that don't involve newspapers?).
Maybe you've heard of the 2012 Guardian Angel Knitting Program ... basically the program runs through June to August and it encourages knitters across all skill levels to pick up sticks and knit some winter woolies for children in need.

<img src="http://www.bubhub.com.au/community/forums/attachment.php?attachmentid=25598&d=1345023731" border="0" alt="Name: guardian.jpg

With enthusiasm I picked up a kit and opened the booklet ready to knit up a storm ...

Unfortunately I forgot that I couldn't knit. Not a bit. Have failed many attempts, have frustrated my mother and grandmother many times over as they tried to teach me. Received a 'D' for home ecomonics in Year 8.

So I failed yet again. I've passed on the knitting needles to my sister-in-law and she's taken over from where I left off.

Luckily what I lack in knitting skills I make up for with my writing skills.

So I write to you all hoping that someone - or someone's nana - who is handy with the knitting needles might pick up a free pattern book from their local Guardian Pharmacy and get knitting ...

The campaign runs till the end of August and is in partnership with Variety - The Children's Charity!
Based on a true story, and featuring Jack Black's most incredible performance yet (I couldn't take my eyes off him), Bernie is one of the most intriguing, beautifully realised, and unforgettable films this year. It is so good and so bizarre that I have already seen it twice.

Most of us were picky eaters to some extent during our toddler years. I distinctly remember disliking avocado (slimy!) and sweet potato as a child, both foods I now love. I refused to eat fatty spreads (butter and margarine) on my sandwiches or toast until my early 20s, and there was a time as a child where I insisted on eating my sliced carrot raw and my peas frozen.

Can you remember any foods that you didn't like as a child? Are there some foods you still don't like now? I still can't stomach any chewy, sinewy or fatty bits in meat to this day.

What many of us don't realise, as parents, is that our own preferences are accommodated and less visible because we are the ones who do the food shopping. If we don't like it, we don't buy it. No-one puts it on our plate and expects us to eat it!

It's natural for toddlers to go through a picky period. It's also natural for most of them to grow out of it. Some of them don't- many of us know or live with an adult who is a picky eater. Parents naturally worry that their growing child might not be getting all the nutrients they need. Many food and supplement companies play on these concerns to sell us vitamins and fortified foods ('toddler milk', anyone?) that most children really don't need. Sometimes, parents' good intentions can backfire and exacerbate their picky eater's habits.

Children are all different, and the picky eaters amongst them are no exception. I will be blogging a series of mini-lists of tips for parents to try over the next few weeks. There are a few golden rules to keep in mind always, however:

If you are genuinely concerned that your child's diet is inadequate and they may have a nutritional deficiency, see a registered dietitian.

Don't resort to the bottle- the milk bottle, that is! Allowing your picky eater to consume a large part of their daily nutrient intake as bland, easy-to-drink formula or milk will only reinforce their refusal of food. They learn to wait for the bottle. If your child has a nutritional deficiency and takes a supplement or formula on dietitian's advice, make sure to ask how they will work with you and your child to gradually replace the formula with a balanced diet*.

Exposure is the key to solving most picky eating problems. Ensure your child is regularly served the foods that you wish them to learn to eat. Eating meals with your child, where they see YOU eating those foods is also very important. Exposure is one of the key areas where I will be providing tips to try in future posts, so stay tuned!

Could there be an underlying cause for your child's picky eating? Some children have issues with oral-motor skills that might make it hard to chew, manipulate and swallow certain foods. Others have oral sensitivity issues where they are over or under-sensitive to certain food textures. Dental pain can result in avoidance of some foods- teething, tooth alignment or even decay are all potential causes. If you suspect that any of these might be factors in your child's picky eating, you may wish to investigate further with the help of a speech pathologist, occupational therapist or the family dentist.

Congratulations to the mum who recently posted the following on Target's Facebook page:

"Dear Target, Could you possibly make a range of clothing for girls 7-14 years that doesn't make them look like tramps … You have lost me as a customer when buying apparel for my daughter as I don't want her thinking shorts up her backside are the norm or fashionable.''

(According to The Age, last night the post had attracted more than 44,000 ''likes'' and 2300 comments - most of them from parents criticising the retailer for selling ''hooker-style'' clothes to young girls.)

To be fair, it is not just Target that should be in the firing line (sorry, couldn't help it). It is hard to find affordable, quality kids clothes generally. But when it appears that much of what is on offer across the market involves dressing our girls in grunge, cut off shorts, off the shoulder tops and dresses, crop tops and skirts that barely cover the bum, then finding great clothing for our kids is even harder.

Don't get me wrong - I don't want my 8 year old daughter to dress conservatively, or in a pink tutu, or in neck to knee frocks - far from it. But I certainly don't want her to look 'sexy'.

What I do want is a great choice of clothing that she loves and that I feel comfortable letting her wear.

How hard can it be?

I don’t know about you but when my daughter’s little teeth popped out as a baby I had no idea how to care for them –- was I supposed to brush them? Use toothpaste? Or just leave them? And for your toddler there are just so many brushes and toothpastes to choose from (once I could catch her and coax her to open her mouth) it was all a bit bewildering! As more teeth grew I wondered about when to take her to the dentist for the first time, what to do about the little chip on her front tooth from when she fell and landed face-first on a concrete pathway, how long I should be brushing her teeth for, so many questions!

Luckily there is plenty of information out there to help with your questions, and this article about 'Caring for Baby and Toddler Teeth' is a great starting point. It tells you all about tooth development, how many teeth will grow and approximately when, as well as how to care for little teeth, preparing for a first dentist visit and how diet can help to keep teeth healthy and beautiful.

So how old was your child when you first took them to the dentist? I must confess that Miss 5 hasn’t yet made it to a dentist, but she has an appointment for next week. 'Who with?’ you might ask? Read on to find out who, and why!

I’ve been gathering together recommendations for and comments about paediatric dental practices and child-friendly dentists from Mums and Dads who rave about the dentists they have found for their children. And so, in alphabetical order by location here are some of Perth’s Best Paediatric and Child-Friendly Dentists according to you (I have included their phone number if they don’t have a website). If I’ve missed off the dentist you and your kids love, please just use the comments below this post to let me know and I’ll add it in here :)

Still keeping the Bourne name and formula, The Bourne Legacy steers away from its Jason Bourne protagonist to introduce a new agent/hero, Aaron Cross (Jeremy Renner). The latest instalment begins parallel to where The Bourne Ultimatum left off, with Jason Bourne in New York City on the verge of exposing the CIA's covert special ops secrets. The CIA subsequently try to cease all black ops projects, but Cross manages to escape, sparking a new international manhunt.

The Bourne Legacy is entertaining enough, with a hint of James Bond to the dialogue and action. It is a return to the older style of action flick, with less swearing, no sex scenes, and violence that is implied rather than visceral. This makes The Bourne Legacy one of the more easy-going action flicks of the year, and one of the more accessible.

OK so it’s world Breastfeeding Week so here’s a little post from The Thrifty Mama and The Dull Roar Philosophy on Breast feeding.
Let’s take a couple of things as read: Breastmilk is the perfect milk for babies. It can be tricky to establish. If you are unable to breastfeed I don’t judge you for it or think you are compromising your child or your womanhood.
Right now those elephants in the room have been banished let’s get back to why I like it.

The milk is free. Have you seen the price of formula? I just couldn’t choose to bottle feed with formula being so expensive even if all other things were equal! I have a real problem spending money when I can get the same (or better) for free!

Preparation is easy hungry baby + milky breast = sorted. I am not great with measuring, sterilising and washing things at the best of times. I can’t imagine how much worse I would be with an infant robbing me of sleep too!

No waste! Ok so not strictly true as any breast feeding mum who has woken up in a puddle of her own milk or watched the milk pouring out in the shower knows but at least you don’t sit there looking at the 50 mls of (expensive) mixed formula that bub won’t drink and you can’t keep (then you have to wash up the bottle ergh..) And breasts adjust automatically to the baby, I just don’t think I would be as fastidious…

Snuggling and sitting. There are things I like to do. Two of those things are snuggling babies and sitting on my backside. Breastfeeding rolls the two of them into one delicious chore with a boost of oxytocin to boot.

Accessories aren’t necessary. I have washable breast pads (about to be used for a third baby!) and an electric pump and bottles (from the first bubby and expressing at work) I have nursing bras and a wedge shaped pillow for supporting baby but really all you need are breasts and a baby. Other things are handy but optional.

Can you think of any other reasons Breastfeeding is the thriftier and less effort option that I have missed?

Greazefest is on at Rocklea Showgrounds. Starting tonight at 7.30pm through to from 8pm on Sunday, the weekend is bursting with hot rods, vintage vehicles, markets, music, and piston-charged fun. Tickets start at $20pp (kids under 15 FREE with paying adult), or save yourself some dosh and buy a weekend pass.

Join the peanut gallery at Pasar Rakyat in celebration of all things Indonesian. Plenty of yummy food and eclectic market stalls should keep you warm from 4pm Saturday. Entry is FREE; the venue is the New Farm park lawn outside Brisbane Powerhouse.

The Queensland Academy for Creative Industries showcases some of our finest local talent at the 4 Walls Festival on Saturday from 2pm-10:30pm. Some amazing live bands are on the schedule, featuring some of the best emerging artists. Tickets are available from Moshtix.

Corinda is the place to be on Sunday with the inaugural AmbiFair. A great family day out for the kids features rides, entertainment, fashion, fun, music, stalls, and raffle prizes. Get down to Ambiwerra Sports Field from 10am and show your support.

Meanwhile, on the other side of town, the Pine Rivers Show is the place to be for families - primary school children enter free all weekend! The jam-packed program starts today, and promises fireworks, motorcross, rodeo action, woodchopping, displays, puppet shows, and lots, lots more. The Fantastic Farmer competition looks to be worth the price of admission alone!

Redcliffe will be cooking up a storm at What's Cooking in the Gardens? A feast of activities, workshops and special events for every palate will take place at Redcliffe Botanical Gardens from 10am Sunday.

And if you've got kids you probably won't have time for this, but if you can sneak away for a quickie, Sexpo is currently on display behind closed doors at the Brisbane Convention and Exhibition Centre.

Have a warm weekend!

Recently I had a car full of boys aged 11 and 12. We were off to a school football game and I was the designated driver. Never one to be shy and retiring, and god forbid 'a boring mum', I cranked up the CD with a bit of Queen's 'We Will Rock You' to get the lads in the mood for a thumping win. There we were driving down the freeway with the stereo blasting, 5 boys and one crazy mum, singing our hearts out. Fun.

Then the song stopped at the chat started. It went something like this (I kid you not - this is the way they actually speak!):

Hey dude have you got a girlfriend?
Yes, I have now.
No way!?
Yes way!
Hey man, when did you hook up with your chick?
Last week. I asked her to 'go out with me' and she said yes'
So have you been out?
No man, when you ask them out it just means they are your girlfriend, but you don't actually go anywhere
Oh. Where does she live?
I dont know! I'm not stalking her dude!
Do you talk to her?
Yes, I talk to her at school
What do you talk about?
Well you have to talk about things 'they' like.
What? Like strawberries dude? Flowers?

I kept a straight face, didn't comment, didn't even look sideways. Feeling very privileged to have accidently been overlooked and allowed in to the inner sanctum of tweenie boy chat, I did not want the spell to break. Dude.

We're well and truly in-between family film season, and finding a good film to take the kids to see at the moment hasn't been particularly easy. But if you're looking to take the kids to the flicks, then Step Up 4 Miami Heat could be your answer. Refreshingly simple, the film has a basic storyline that is comfortably predictable, easy to follow, and accessible. The dancing is outrageously good, with dazzling moves shining across the screen from start to finish, and some artistic choreography that will leave you breathless.

The best part of all though (apart from the rather saucy dancer in the police uniform), is that the film doesn't have any swearing, nudity, or violence, so it really is perfectly fine for the whole family to enjoy. My six-year-old daughter did find the plot to be a little above her head, but loved the movie nonetheless.

With shows like So You Think You Can Dance, and Everybody Dance Now proving popular on the telly, Step Up 4 Miami Heat is a great opportunity to spread your love of awesome dancing to the cinema. Waltz along and enjoy.
When I was pregnant the advice I remember most was from a friend whose baby was four months old at the time.

She told me that, for her, breastfeeding was hard at the beginning. She struggled with cracked nipples and terrible mastitis but she was glad she had gotten through it and was now breastfeeding happily.

Her story armed me with two things -the knowledge that breastfeeding wasn't necessarily going to be easy and the confidence to know that even if it wasn't there would be light at the end of the tunnel.

Those two things - knowledge and confidence - combined with the support of a partner, mother, friend or lactaction consultant/counsellor/midwife can go a long way to helping a mother breastfeed successfully.

Here are some more things that pregnant women should know about breastfeeding:

1. Breastmilk is perfectly designed for human babies. It gives them all the nutrients they need to grow and thrive for the first six months and is the most important part of their diet until they are 12 months old. Breastmilk continues to be a valuable source of nutrition until the baby is weaned.

2. The World Health Organisation recommends that breastfeeding should continue to age two and beyond.

3. Breastfeeding, like most things, is a learned skill - for you and bub. It might not seem like it at the beginning but soon you'll both be extremely awesome at it! Arm yourself with as much info as you can and ask for help when you need it.

4. Breastmilk increases a baby's resistance to infection and disease and decreases the risk of allergy and food intolerance.

5. Breastfeeding is the most convenient, cheap and reliable way to feed your baby. It is always fresh and hygienic.

6. Breastfeeding reduces the risk of SIDS.

7. Breastfeeding comforts and soothes babies. It releases a sleep-inducing hormone in both mum and baby. A good reason for you both to have a well-deserved nap!

8. Breastfeeding helps your uterus to go back to its normal size after the baby is born.

9. Breastfeeding allows you to sit down and rest during the day (sometimes a lot ... see next point). You'll welcome the quiet time once baby is born.

10. A newborn can feed maybe 8-12 times and sometimes for up to an hour at a time. Now, if you do the maths it means you potentially could be breastfeeding for 12 hours in a day! A good chair or comfy breastfeeding pillow could save your back ... and a good DVD boxset may save your sanity. Make sure you've always got a drink (and the remote) handy!

11. You can do it! There's only a very small percentage of women who can't breastfeed for physiological reasons so if you want to breastfeed your baby it helps if you go in with a positive attitude. BUT ... if you can't continue breastfeeding as long as you wanted to - and there are many reasons that it doesn't always work out as planned - you should know that every drop that you did give your baby did it the world of good.

And if you are wanting support or advice you can find a breastfeeding or lactaction consultant in our directory. Getting professional advice can be cheaper than a meal out.

--------

What did you wish you knew about breastfeeding before your baby was born? What is the most important tip do you think?

Thanks to Fifty Shades of Grey, everybody on the planet should now know what fan-fiction is (you did know that FSoG is a fan-fiction novel based on the characters from the Twilight series, didn't you?). If not, then best get along and do your research, because fan-fiction and mashup novels are taking the literary world by storm. Abraham Lincoln Vampire Slayer is one example of a mashup novel adapted to the big screen, and as far as genre-bending goes, it doesn't get much sillier than this.

The premise is ludicrous--Abe Lincoln enjoys a secret pastime as a vampire-slayer before finding fame as the 16th President of the United States of America. As long as you keep your mind wide open, then you can have a bit of fun with this film, but it isn't for the feint-hearted. Violence and terror have earned Abraham Lincoln Vampire Slayer a MA15+ rating, but personally, I think it deserves an R rating.

I did manage to find a scratch or two of enjoyment in this film, read why here.

Disappointed with only a 200gram loss at the last weigh in, this week has been all about nutrition, as I'm sure it is snacks (and willpower!) that are letting me down.

I've never paid much attention to nutrition previously... I'd eat well, enjoy my food, and not really worried myself with the details.
But now I'm trying to shed some weight, it seems I really need to put more effort into a healthy balance and eating right.
Not knowing where to start, I got some tips from the nutritionists behind the Healthy Mummy range:

1. Breakfast is the most important meal of the day
I'm the sort that can't get out of bed without eating a full breakfast so I've swapped my cereal for a vanilla Healthy Mummy smoothie with banana and frozen berries. So far so good!

2. Don't starve yourself – if you are hungry have a piece of fruit or a cup of green tea
As I get truly cranky if I'm hungry, I've found this one a great comfort. Previously I would usually snack on chips and biscuits so the snack list in the Pink Bible has been invaluable.
Snacks such as sardines on wholegrain toast, carrot sticks with hummous, crispbreads with philadelphia cheese are all making an appearance in my renewed shopping list.
The recipe section on the website has also been a lifesaver, as I'm always struggling for healthy ideas for lunches and dinners.

3. Treat yourself – we all crave comfort food or sweets at some point so give yourself a weekly treat of dark chocolate
Absolutely, and the dark chocolates in the Healthy Mummy range are yum!
4. Healthy doesn't always mean low calories – make sure you look on the back of packs to see exactly what the nutritional value is
To be honest, I've never looked at the back of the packets before now. There is all sorts of useful information on there! Now, as well as the calorie count, I look for higher protein, low fat and low sodium.
5. Fish Oil is an essential – make sure you are taking a 1000mg dosage each morning
I also had no idea about this, but it apparently has a heap of benefits such as:
May assist the symptomatic relief and management of rheumatism.
May assist in the management and relief of symptoms of eczema, dermatitis and psoriasis.
Supports & maintains the health of the cardiovascular system.
May assist in the maintenance of cholesterol with the normal range in healthy individuals and improve the LDL:HDL ratio.
Helps to maintain healthy cognitive function and promotes healthy mood.
Supports the health & function of the nervous system.

I've got to say, I'm feeling a lot better and a lot wiser about what and how I eat, so hopefully we'll see a better result next week!
I'm also really hoping that the changes I'm making to my diet will start to flow down to the family... maybe soon we might finally find a way to break the chicken nugget addiction of Mr4!

Finding the right maternity bra during pregnancy is like the trying to find the best maternity jeans – seems impossible, but when you do it’s a pregnancy wardrobe staple you simply can’t live without.

I have a confession: during my twin pregnancy around five years ago my best friend gave me her maternity bras. They were pre-loved ones, cotton, seemingly comfy and supportive, but looking back now, I probably needed far more support for my fast-growing breasts.

Since getting to know the Mamaway brand I have been privy to the entire range of their maternity bras – and even tried some on. I wanted to keep them – and I am not even pregnant!

The Mamaway range includes their ‘Flexiwire’ maternity bras.

Although there’s no evidence showing that the use of underwire bras cause mastitis or blocked ducts, Mamaway believes that mums or mums-to-be should be on the safe side, and so, after much sampling and workshopping and trialling on real-life mums, Mamaway have come up with the concept of the ‘Flexiwire’ maternity bras range.
They are designed to give you a superior shape, support and better overall breast health.

So, what exactly is a ‘Flexiwire bra’?

Flexiwire bras are designed to flex and change the position with breasts changing shape and are less likely to cause problems with milk ducts and mastitis.

The thing that I found during my pregnancy is that wireless bras with insufficient support flattened my chest and compressed it. Over the long term, they some sagging occurred [I am now so religious with keeping my breast shape, well, perky, that is always wear a bra to bed, and at home even when I have no plans to go out].

The biggest question often is: when to change to a maternity or nursing bra from your regular bra?

There is no ‘right time’ to be fitted for a maternity bra while pregnant - for some it will be sooner than others, depending on how soon your breast change size and shape. You may find you outgrow your pre-pregnancy bras fairly quickly, or you may not need to purchase a maternity bra until much later.

And how do you choose a maternity or nursing bra?

Here are some tips from Mamaway:
1) The channel of the cup should sit around the base of the breast tissue, not on the breast tissue
2) The top part of the cup should not cut into the breast
3) You should not feel that you breast is compressed, flattened or restricted by the bra cup fabric
4) The side of the bra cup should encompass the breast tissue and not be placed on it
5) The horizontal band should not ride up your back when fastened, struggling to take the weight of your breast.

Bonus tip to examine if you are fitted properly: when you lift up your arms and move around, the bra should still be sitting properly and the position should not change.
And finally, how often should you change your nursing bras?

Mamaway recommends when your baby starts to be introduced solid food, a bra fitting
should be considered since less milk is produced at this stage. Moreover, the worn life of a bra is in general to be six months due to regular wash and wear, its elastics and fabrics lose the elasticity and strength.

So there you have it!

Here are some fine examples of Mamaway maternity bras – pretty impressive and not as ‘mumsy’ as you may have expected, yes?
According to the results of the Lose Baby Weight & Bub Hub New Mum and Exercise Survey - which you may have completed earlier this year - the overwhelming majority of us would prefer a quick, healthy option over takeaway, we're generally not too worried by celebrity baby weight stories and most of us exercise at least once a week.
It's not ALL good news though ... 86.7 per cent of us (mums with kids under five years of age) admit to eating badly when we are having a bad or stressful day.

I know I've justified the best part of a family block after a day of family-induced stress. I'm convinced that's why they were named that anyway.

It will come as no surprise that it looks like most mums put their health needs seconds to the needs of her family.

Anyway here are some of the stand-out results from the survey.

Thanks again for your input ...

Since having your first child, have you noticed changes in your own eating habits?

I used to LOVE the Olympics. I have very clear memories of the Olympics as a little girl - and of witnessing amazing performances in human strength and endurance.

As a young adult I recall being thrilled that a little known Irish girl had stunned the world winning gold in the pool. I also recall having a blazing, stand up, walk out argument with my brother in law when he suggested that her 'stunning' win was clearly a performance enhanced win. I was appalled! Surely the underdog's underdog could win on sheer guts and determination? But sadly it appeared not. I was horrified when she was indeed later outed as a cheat.

And then there were the Chinese swimmers who were caught red handed. Not to mention the numerous cyclists, weightlifters and sprint stars outed, disgraced and stripped of their former glory.

What a shame.

So it is with a sadly more cynical eye that I now watch the world records tumble - are they real records or enhanced records and will we ever really know? More's the pity for the truely talented, non cheating athletes who have the shadow of doubt tarnish them.

"As I screamed "Mum! My waters broke on your couch!" my partner pulled up into the driveway."

For almost a month, I was 3cm dilated, in what one doctor called "Pre-Labour". I'd been having Braxton Hicks contractions all this time, and my mucus plug had come away about a week before my baby was born.

"But 'Lumpy' wasn't due for another week", I thought, so I decided on the 20th to have dinner at my mum's while my partner was at work. I took my oldest daughter, and it ended up being a family gathering.

At 9pm, I was walking from the kitchen to the front room, when I felt this terrible tearing pain, coming from right between my hips. Along with that, the strongest contraction I've ever experienced!

As I yelled in agony, my mum and brother came over to me. My brother organised to get some Panadol from the supermarket, while my mum held me up. As soon as the pain came, it was gone. The time was 9:30pm.

As nothing nearly as painful as that first contraction came, I stood upright and went to continue onto what I was doing. And another contraction hit.

I yelled for mum to ring my partner just as I reached for my phone. 'Lumpy' was on her way, we needed to get to the hospital FAST! Neither of us could reach him. So we tried again. And again, and again, and again! I must have made nearly 150+ calls to him in the space of 30 minutes. The time was now 10pm.

Another large contraction hit, and I went on all-fours. I even hopped onto mum's new sofa, as it was sorter. My waters broke! As I screamed "MUM! MY WATERS BROKE ON YOUR COUCH!" my partner pulled up into the driveway.

Mum must've gotten onto him, FINALLY. As the pain passed, I bolted for the toilet. It felt like I needed to have a bowel moment, so I ran. Sitting down, I could hear my partner on the phone to the hospital. He was asking me questions, and all I kept thinking was "Sheesh, let me poop in peace!"

A bit later, I got up. Big mistake! I made it to the lounge room, and doubled over with another contraction. "We're not making it to the hospital" I remember saying, and my partner had the phone to his ear, speaking to Emergency Services. Can you believe they wanted to speak to me?

The time was now 10:20pm. I handed the phone back, and another contraction came on. It felt like I needed to push, or that I was and didn't even register the thought. I whipped my pants off on the floor, and lay back onto my partner's lap. All I remember him saying is "I think she's pushing", my mum "I don't see the head", and me yelling at anyone who'd listen "Run me a bath!"

My little sister came in to see what the commotion was! My mum had stepped away to collect towels, and my partner asks her "Check to see if there's a head. They need to know if there's a head there yet". When she timidly said "No" and ran away, my daughter came into the room just as I had the urge to push. I screamed at her to go back into the other room, while I pushed again.

The baby's head was out. I felt my way around, to make sure the cord wasn't around her neck. Gladly it wasn't. I saw blue and red light through the window. I heard my mum yell at my brother and his friend to stay outside. My brother-in-law (who my mum had called while trying to find towels, hoping he could come and deliver) walked in the door, asked if I needed any help. The paramedics walked in. Time: 10:30pm.

My brother-in-law walked out of the room, clearly of no use, but stayed outside to talk to my brother. The paramedics stood at the door for what seemed like ages, not really sure what to do. "We were told that you were only 20 weeks" said one. "This is my first birth", chimed the other. When I screamed that I needed to push again, they jumped into action. One ran for towels, blankets and whatever else she could find, the other guided the shoulders out. Half a second later, 'Lumpy' was born. Time: 10:35pm.

My older daughter ame into the room, and I showed her her new baby sister. "I don't like her" was all she could say. When I asked why, "Because she hurt you and you screamed at me!" My poor darling!

But as I was caught with so many other new things at that time, I parked it aside and forgot about it after a while. Then one fateful day, I had an unexpected 'red day' and was caught totally unprepared. You can imagine my extreme irritation and frustration. I resorted to using (of all things) a breast pad (an extremely poor substitute) until I was able to pop out to the shops to restock.

That was the turning point for me.

There are many benefits to using cloth pads (also called ‘mama cloth’), including…

Comfort (trading plastic for velvety soft velour fabric? no brainer)

Better for sensitive skin (no more chemicals)

Less odour (that signature ‘period odour’ is actually from chemicals in disposable pads, not us)

Convenience (no running out of pads again)

Cost savings

Green/environmental benefits

My own main personal motivation is the convenience. Perhaps it’s because I’m not one of those super regular 28-days women, so stocking up is not an automatic thing for me. Hence having a never-fail stash ready to go is a big plus for my case.

Cost savings is not a major factor as the $5-10 per month on ‘sposies is not a real biggie, but it does add up in the long-term.

The increased comfort and reduced odour was a great bonus. Once I felt the difference for myself, there was no going back.

Plus the eye candy alone is enough to make anyone want to switch.

I know the whole idea might raise some eyebrows, particularly in relation to laundry. All the same principles on laundry for cloth nappies apply here as well: Use a good pre-wash rinse/soak method and have faith in the wonders of your modern washing machine.

I support buying locally, especially for fresh food. I am also against buying rubbishy items on the Internet simply because hey look good and are cheap to purchase. They are nearly always a poor proposition as they don’t work or break and then end up in landfill wasting resources, time and money. Then you have to buy another one.
HOWEVER I am also a tightwad so if something is good quality and saves me a substantial amount of money or I can’t source it locally and it is something I need I will buy it online.
We all know about online department stores and I have to say that my forays into purchasing from them have been less than satisfying. Pilly easily torn sheets were one lesson learned so I tend to stay away from them BUT I have found a few online stores that have good quality and good prices and are worth a look (but don’t get sucked in by gorgeous things you don’t need!)

www.petersofkensington.com.au Oh boy. If you haven’t been to this website and you like homewares please be warned, there is some seriously gorgeous useless stuff here. RESIST! But if you are looking for quality knives, pans, cookware, cutlery etc this should be your first port of call. The savings can be huge. They also offer great savings through their Daily Deal Newsletter but if you are a slowly reforming shopaholic maybe it is best if you don’t sign up.
www.harrisscarfe.com.au Did you know that my favourite discount department store offers great online specials? I love Harris Scarfe, our is like stepping back 30 years in time which is fun (also unintentional- a perk of living in Tasmania, there are lots of “retro” style shops that have no idea they are retro- long may they prosper!)So I prefer to go in but there are lots of online only specials for homewares, clothes, footwear etc. Worth a look!

www.groceryrun.com.au This is an online grocery clearance shop(I know, you never would have guessed!) run by Catch of the Day. Gifty chocolates are something I see a lot as well as pantry items. Sometimes they have free items on Fridays you can grab whilst you put in an order. Very tempting to buy too many chocolates.

Also by the People who bought you Catch of the Day we have www.mumgo.com.au where you can get great specials on baby products and things for mum.
Whilst we are on the topic of baby and mum products www.dailybabybuys.com.au and www.dailymummybuys.com.au have daily deals you can sign up to have emailed to you. Remember to resist the unnecessary! I bought my boys Green Toys trucks considerably discounted from Daily Baby Buys. www.bambinobrands.com.au is similar and has great quality and brand name baby products on sale.

If you are in an isolated area buying nuts, beans and seeds can be expensive (even though they should be cheap foods) so buying in bulk online can make a lot of sense. I buy most of my nuts and seeds from www.salfood.com.au and get almonds for $10 a kilo! Another great bulk foods supplier is http://biodistributors.com.au where I buy organic panela/rapadura sugar amongst other things.

The most important thing to remember with online purchases ( I am assuming you have bought online before so won’t waste my time with utter basics) is that of course it is something you would otherwise have purchased and it isn’t a total impulse buy because it is cheap and/or cute and that after you add on shipping the numbers still come out in your favour. I can’t tell you the amount of times I have had a great order ready to go but the price of shipping to Tasmania would make you weep!
So go forth and save!

More of my particular brand of more life for less at the Dull Roar Philosophy and find me on Facebook!

With the recent snap of cold weather around the country, child safety experts are warning parents and grandparents to be wary of the dangers of burns/scalds and electrical-induced injuries.

During winter, families need to be more vigilant than ever about ensuring that their children and grandchildren don’t suffer permanent damage or disfigurement, most of which occur in the home.

<img src="http://www.bubhub.com.au/community/forums/attachment.php?attachmentid=24651&d=1343278900" border="0" alt="Name: winterkid_home.jpg

The latest statistics compiled by the Victorian Injury Surveillance Unit at Monash University reveal that 1,709 children in Victoria alone were treated in hospital for burns and scalds. These figures do not include deaths, as they are held by the Victorian Coroner's Court. Multiply the number above by three or four, for a national indication, and it's clear that the issue is not to be taken lightly.

According to child safety expert, Noel Caulfield, homes with poor safety standards are often to blame.

"Research shows that in 60 per cent of houses, hot water exceeds 55 degrees and fire extinguishers or safety blankets are not installed," he says.

"A further 30 per cent of homes have inadequate or non-functioning smoke alarms. Many more have dangerous kitchen and dining areas that can cause serious injuries.

"During the colder months, there is an increase in the use of heaters, hot drinks and boiling water, all of which are potentially dangerous to young children. Of particular concern are the risks presented in children's grandparents' homes, where child home safety may not have been on the agenda for many years."

Electrical-induced injuries are also particularly common during winter. Increased use of radiators, electric blankets, kettles and other appliances can easily overheat or put pressure on electrical circuits and power points.

The results – an inferno or electrocution – are devastating and the time to act is now, Caulfield says.

"Thousands of children each year around the country are treated in hospital for fire-related injuries," he says.

"These injuries can be permanent and are all the more lamentable because they are entirely avoidable. Being cautious saves lives."

While electrical switchboards in new homes are protected by residual current devices, which immediately cut power supply upon sensing a surge or drain of electricity, the majority of houses are not adequately equipped.

"Any household with young children should be fitted with an R.C.D. immediately," Caulfield says.

"Moreover, if your house is not fitted with a fire extinguisher or blanket, and your fire alarms don't work, it’s an extremely worrying situation."

As well as restricting children's access to dangerous appliances and power points, parents should not forget to isolate extension leads and make sure electrical sockets are not overloaded.

Some simple tips to ensure the safety of young children over the winter period include:
• Making sure matches and lighters are out of reach
• Fitting combustion heaters and exposed gas fires with safety barriers
• Removing tablecloths when toddlers are present, so they cannot accidentally upturn hot drinks and food onto themselves
• Checking smoke detectors are in working order
• Restricting hot water to 50 degrees, otherwise safety covers should be applied
• Isolating kitchens and potential hazard areas

Caulfield says that complimentary do-it-yourself child home safety checklists can easily be found online, and that parents, and particularly grandparents, should conduct a thorough inspection of their houses to ensure that dangers to children are minimised.

A group of life-long friends choose to enter into a commune-style arrangement to help care for each other in their twilight years, rather than spend their retiring days in an aged care facility. Jane Fonda is sensational as Jeanne, with first-class performances from the entire cast. Take your grandma (providing she doesn't mind a bit of sex talk and nudity).

Is it not enough to be selected to represent your country, to have the honor of running in a race (any race) at the Olympics? Clearly not. Today it is reported that controversial Australian runners John Steffensen and Josh Ross have sulkily agreed to run their relays despite their indignant anger at being denied the chance to run individual races. Are they kidding?

To be selected to run in an individual race, like any other sport, you have to go through a qualification process. If you miss the cut, you have the right to appeal (which Josh Ross chose not to exercise). To be blunt, he is not fast enough. To be blunter, he rates his best chance at maybe making a semi-final. And yet he chooses to embarress all of us by taking his whinge to the media (and not through the standard appeals process).

And Steffensen, well. he already has form when it comes to whinging, threatening to walk out and generally throwing a well publicised toddler worthy tantrum.

Seriously guys. Suck it up. Pull your head in. Be happy, honoured and proud to have been selected at all. This is not about you, really it isn't.

If you're planning a girls' night out, then you could do worse than spend it with the likes of Channing Tatum, Matthew McConaughey and their hot-bodded pals. Magic Mike, in case you haven't heard, is about male strippers, and provides the right amount of eye candy to allow you to get close and almost personal with some spectacular abs. The dancing is fun and raunchy, with McConaughey's performance as the oily team-leader being the sauciest of the lot. The only downside to Magic Mike is the storyline, which gets a little bit carried away with itself and too serious, but hey, it's not the storyline that you are going to see this film for, right? I'm told that this film is good fun to watch with a glass of bubbles or two, so make a night of it, if you're up for it.

It's week 2 of the great jeans challenge and happy to declare a 1/2 kg weight loss!

What I've discovered this week from the Lose Baby Weight plan is all the ingenenious ways to fit movement and exercise into my every day.
I don't have the time or the finances to justify a gym membership, so it's up to me and the things around my house to burn some calories.

Here are just some of the exercise tips from the week:

1) Dancing with bub
I never thought of this, but it is so much fun. I dance with the baby, I dance with Mr4, I dance whilst sorting the laundry.
Putting music on in the house rather than the TV has also made such a difference to the mood of every day. Singing and dancing rather than infommercials has certainly made home a happier place.

2) Squats and lunges.
On a quest for a perkier butt (who doesn't want that!) I've started doing squats and lunges whenever I have a moment. You can fit 20 in whilst the kettle is boiling, and at least 50 whilst hanging out a load of washing.

3) Core exercises
Whilst baby is on the playmat, I've started to use that time to get down on the floor with her and get the core active again. For some strange reason she finds my crunches hilarious, so win win right there.

4) Get moving
When Mr4 is playing, rather than catching up on emails with a cuppa and a biscuit, I now run around with him. I'll chase him with the football, play tag, have running races... anything to get us moving. Another win win, as we both love the time together and I'm getting active.

5) Strength exercises
During nap time I now try and do a mini circuit of exercises:
Start with some step ups on the back step to get the heart rate up a little, then push ups (I do them on my knees), tricep dips on the dining chair, shoulder presses with tins of beans. Even if its just 20 minutes (as we all know that naptime is also that one spell of peace we get to do everything else!), its enough to get that heart rate up and feeling stronger.

You'll find all the exercise plans in more detail on www.losebabyweight.com.au

More soon...

Is anyone else trying to lose baby weight at the moment?
Any tips to share?

Fun and cheeky, Hysteria is the story of the invention of the vibrator. It's hilarious in that wink-wink-nudge-nudge kind of way that British comedy is famous for. There's nothing offensive or lewd about Hysteria so don't be afraid to take your mum (like I did) or your husband. Maggie Gyllenhaal is amazing as a pre-Suffragette hothead with a cultured British accent that sounds exactly like Emma Thompson. Hugh Dancy is cute and lovable as Doctor Granville, the inventor of the blessed device, but it is Rupert Everett who really steals the show with a blithe performance as Granville's friend. Hysteria is a pleasant, harmless comedy that is sure to provide plenty of satisfaction.
We recently received a Raa Raa the Noisy Lion DVD in the mail.
A perk of the job ...

The Toddler loves this show mostly because it confirms his belief that the word for lion is in fact 'Raa'. His word for most things comes from the noise it makes ... a dog is 'a woof', a fire engine is 'iiiireesh' (his version of a siren). The word for ambulance is confusingly similar.

Anyway this Raa Raa DVD provided me with two things. The first was The Second-Most Frustrating Conversation I've Had About a Lion (*)

Me (opening the package): Look it is Raa!
The Toddler: No... raa.
Me: Yes, Raa!
TT: No ... raa.
Me: Yes, a lion.
TT: Yes... raa! RAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA!!!!!!

The second was the opportunity to overanalyse yet another kid's TV show.

Turns out I overanalyse all kids show ... I mean what else is there to do?

Here are just a few of the many thoughts I've had while watching children's TV.

Raa Raa the Noisy Lion: Does his car have watermelon wheels? That would never work.

Bob the Builder: Are Bob and Wendy "together"? Why doesn't he build her a house so she doesn't have to sleep in that caravan? Oh man! That is one annoying scarecrow. Don't they realise he is made of hay ... I'd feed that hay to the horses.

Postman Pat: I think I'd like to live in this town. Although I'd never get my mail on time ... Did he just say 'mission accomplished"? He didn't accomplish anything! He screwed up so bad that a little girl couldn't practice piano before her recital and she ended up messing it up. Nice one Pat.

Gaspard and Lisa: Are they dogs? Why doesn't anyone realise they are dogs? Is it the scarfs? Hang on ... now they are looking after a puppy! What?! This is confusing. Maybe they are bears ...

Rastamouse: I can't understand a word they are saying. And why isn't the President wearing pants?

Play School: What is with all the masking tape? Can't the ABC afford clear tape? Maybe they bought a container load when the show started back in the 60s and they are still getting through it ... one toilet roll spaceship at a time.

Grandpa in my Pocket: Why don't they ever change their clothes? And how come it is sunny all the time. I've lived in England. It didn't look like that.

Peppa Pig: Their town sure is hilly. Their cars must have excellent handbrakes.

Little Princess: Why is she wearing her nightie? It is the afternoon.

In the Night Garden: What IS a pip?

Mr Moon: the Moon is Canadian? I never realised.

Captain Mack: Did he just say "I have to go. My Monkey needs me" ... I should use that sometime ...

Poko: Did he just say "Sometimes, when you're upset, it helps to hug-a-monkey" ... I should try that. But what is with all the monkeys?

Anyway this is all moot now since The Toddler threw a book at the TV. Now our couch just faces a big black expensive ornament.

* The most frustrasting conversation I've ever had about a lion...

The Toddler: RAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA
Me: Oh ... are you a scary dinosaur?
The Toddler: No. Raa!
Me: Oh ... are you a growly tiger?
The Toddler: No. Raa.
Me: Are you a lion ?
TT: Yes. Raa

Do YOU overthink kids TV? Do you have a secret crush on Jimmy Giggle? What have you wondered about the shows your kids watch?

As a big cloth nappy advocate, I frequently get asked questions by people considering using cloth on their babies. One big FAQ I get asked about cloth nappies is about getting around the cost.

Off the rack, modern cloth nappies cost around $20-$40 a piece. For a full time user, a dozen pieces to start with can cost around $300-$400.

<img src="http://www.bubhub.com.au/community/forums/attachment.php?attachmentid=24504&d=1342788618" border="0" alt="Name: mcns.jpg

Fluffy new MCNs are beautiful but can add up to quite a bit at $30 a pop (images from Bean Sprout Bubba)

This is a fairly large start-up cost for most people – although the initial investment will definitely pay-off in the long-term.

If you are a bargain hunter or simply need to find something to fit a tight budget, here are some tips and resources on how/where to get cheap cloth nappies:

Buy pre-loved nappies – buying second-hand is a no-brainer to saving costs. However many people are put-off the idea of buying something that’s been used by someone else before. But really, with modern conveniences like washing machines, easy access to hot water, and a wide range of detergent options, using pre-loved clothes shouldn’t be an issue. Here are some great places to find second-hand nappies:

Used Nappies

Gumtree cloth nappy classifieds

Nappycino cloth nappy trade

Nappyaddicts marketplace

Freecycle

Bub Hub cloth nappy swap (not for buying/selling nappies, but a great option for people itching to swap fluff for some new designs or to upsize/downsize their nappies for a younger or older bub)

Search for online deals and bargains – with the right search keywords and a few mouse clicks, you can score heaps of great bargains from various sellers and retailers. Why pay full price when you can find an item on sale or in the clearance bin? Here are some ways to uncover these sort of deals:

Google Shopping – use keywords like “cloth nappies” or “cloth diapers” and filter the price range according to your budget.

Nappycino WAHM promos and sales – a forum where WAHM selling cloth nappies post announcements on sales and promos they are currently having. You can score beautiful one-of-a-kind handmade MCNs this way.

To save costs of shipping, you can get together with friends or other parents in your area to bundle your purchases and share the shipping costs or even get free shipping if your purchases exceed a certain amount.

Go traditional – consider including prefolds or flats in your stash. It’s not that hard to learn how to use them, and they are much easier to clean and care for compared to MCNs. Many online cloth nappy retailers sell prefolds or you can pick up a pack of generic terry flats from Target or Big W for around $20. Don’t forget to get a few nappy covers or just re-use your MCN/pocket nappy shells as covers.

Go DIY – if you know how to sew and are itching for a project, you could try your hand at making your own cloth nappies. Here are some useful resources to get you started:

Australian Nappy Network Sewing Resource

Sew Mama Sew Diaper Sewing 101

El Cheapo Prefolds from old T-shirts

If all else fails – just hunt-up some old T-shirts and turn them into instant no-sew cloth nappies like this and this.

Make it a farmtastic one at Australia's largest retail expo: Go Expo Farm Fantastic, Caboolture. Advertised as 6-expos-in-1, Farm Fantastic offers a corral of experiences including gourmet, adventure, home retail, professonal services, farm machinery, and entertainment for all ages. Demonstrations, live performances, face-painting, clowns, great food, and a live radio broadcast should keep you busy enough (and that's just scratching the surface). Head to the website for more information, show times, and travel info. Ticket prices are only $10 for seniors, $14 for adults, and children under 14 are FREE.

Not for little kids, but if you have older (18+) kids, then there's plenty going on over the closing weekend of this year's festivities for Queensland Beer Week. Brewery tours, tastings, and home brew demonstrations are just some of the events happening around Brissie until Sunday. See the QBW calendar for more details.

What teams perfectly with beer? Food! The Delectable Food Festival continues this weekend with free shows, demonstrations, and foodie events across Brisbane. Kids will love meeting Masterchef contestants Amina and Filippo at South Bank Cultural Forecourt at 10am on Saturday (FREE). Ranger Stacey and the Totally Wild team visit the same venue at 10am on Sunday (FREE). Visit the website to browse the huge list of other events also available.

School leavers might want to get along to the Tertiary Studies Expo (TSExpo) at RNA Showgrounds. Thinking of going back to study? Then find information, study support, and course details at RNA Showgrounds, Saturday and Sunday 10am-4pm. Admission is FREE.

And if you want to check out the kind of talent that our state schools are producing at the moment, show your support for up and coming performance artists at Creative Generation - State Schools Onstage. This year promises to be sensational. Shows are on Friday and Saturday; tickets available at Ticketek.

If it is live theatre or concerts you're looking for, get your culture on at Queensland Symphony Orchestra's Great Favourites and enjoy some of the best known classics from composers such as Mozart, Rossini, and Tchaikovsky. This one-off performance in on Sunday at 11am; tickets from only $30.

OK so maybe today's blog title isn't punchy but hey we're all parents or parents to be and sometimes looking reasonable is the best we can hope for. It sure beats having weetbix in your hair and snot on your trousers.
I am generally a low maintanence girl when it comes to beauty products. I use a microfibre cloth to wash my face or I oil cleanse both of which work well for me. Once or twice a week I use a Burt's Bees exfoliating scrub( I got it with a Myer voucher I earned from surveys) and I have also been using the Burt's Bees body lotion on my face (I got that free when I purchased my scrub with my free voucher!) I have fairly sensitive skin so when I find any moisturiser that works I want to stick with it. I will be buying more of the body lotion with my next Myer voucher! Coconut oil is great for face, hair and body moisturising and is very good for you too so worth tracking down a supplier of cheap organic coconut oil and having come in the house (it's great for babies skin too!).
I try to avoid petrochemicals and un-pronounceable nasties in my skin and hair care but that can be a bit of a challenge when you don't want to spend a fortune which is why I stick to the above for my skin (generally).
I was really excited to find a shampoo, conditioner and kids wash range that fit my stringent criteria (I really was waaaay to excited considering you just wash in the stuff) and even more excited to find you can get it at major supermarkets- I found ours in Coles.
It is petrochemical free.
Smells good.
makes my hair clean and shiny (many more natural hair products make my hair lank)
Comes in a non-petrochemical 100% recyclable bottle.
is CHEAP! (under $4 a bottle!).
it is an Australian company.
Let's face it, this shampoo is a better person than I am!
It is Organic Care and the kids love it as the shampoo/conditioning/body wash all in one smells like fruit and has dinosaurs on the bottle. you can also get a pink girly one that I think smells like berries. Look for it waaay down on the bottom shelf!

In the spirit of sharing and caring Cole sent me the whole range of their Derma Intensive+ skin care products and after getting over the initial shock of having so many products (Toner.. what? Do I put on the anti-wrinkle cream before or after the anti-wrinkle eye cream?) I have given them a good try and can report this: they are very good value, the creams are just as good as any other major brand I have tried (Loreal, Ulay etc) but prices are under $5 per product. there is a full range and they are full of all kinds of scientifically tested sort of things just like the more expensive brands. Being all scientific and wrinkle fighting they aren't very natural but my skin didn't do weird things and I think the texture has improved. It sure smells good and at least my wrinkles are no worse than before!
I didn't find the hand cream much good but the face creams are good feature packed value and the face cleansing wipes are coming with me to hospital, they are very cleansing and handy and I think they are $2 a packet which is hard to beat. They come in a fragrance free option too. The Derma Intensive oil is a great one for baby bump massaging and more natural than the famous Bio Oil (and much cheaper!)
If you are lucky enough to live in a part of the country that has an Aldi you may have tried their range which gets rave reviews. The Coles Derma Intensive+ range seems very similar and is made in Europe.
If you are looking for a new skin care range it is worth giving it try- such good value (and it smells good!).
Apart from washing and face creams my other big tip is do try home haircuts! the are free and you can learn so much from Youtube these days. I have long hair with a fringe so mine is pretty easy but I am sure a lot of you out there are capable of keeping your hair looking presentable in a more advanced fashion....try it!! I bought some hairdressing shears on eBay for $6 for two pairs (yes they are Chinese) so I have a pair of scissors and the feathering shears and they are really good for our uses so the outlay is minimal!
I would bet that you have lots of other tips to stop us looking like snot smeared ogres....I would love to hear them so leave comment and share with everyone!

Then, if you're like me, you brought your baby home and gave it a try yourself. But it's not so easy at 1.30am when you've only had one hour of unbroken sleep in three days!

So the next step is obviously to go buy a wrap/swaddle that has a zip or velcro to make the whole thing far less painful!

Judging from reviews already circulating, critics seem to like The Dark Knight Rises more than the general public, which must surely be a first for a comic-book adaptation. For me, The Dark Knight Rises is a great big film with great big problems. Some qualities of the film are breath-taking, while others are confusing and a little puerile.

In my full review (which is entirely free of spoilers!), I've tried to present a balanced reflection on the good bits and the not-so-good bits, to help map out the watchability of the film. That said, you're probably going to go and see it anyway (and why not? It's Batman!) so my biggest piece of advice is to take earplugs, or choose a quieter cinema. The audio is so loud that it is painful; my ears felt like they were going to bleed.

As for age appropriateness, the rating is M, which means it is up to you as a parent to judge whether you want your children to see it. Violence is present in the film, but it is not as deep and dark as previous Batman films. Personally, I think my 6-year-old wouldn't enjoy it (too long, too loud, and too confusing), but my 9-year-old nephew would probably love it. His mother, on the other hand...
