  1. Film Review: Abraham Lincoln Vampire Slayer

by , 01-08-2012 at 21:14 (Things to do with kids in Brisbane)
Thanks to Fifty Shades of Grey, everybody on the planet should now know what fan-fiction is (you did know that FSoG is a fan-fiction novel based on the characters from the Twilight series, didn't you?). If not, then best get along and do your research, because fan-fiction and mashup novels are taking the literary world by storm. Abraham Lincoln Vampire Slayer is one example of a mashup novel adapted to the big screen, and as far as genre-bending goes, it doesn't get much sillier than this.

  2. Film Review: And If We All Lived Together?

by , 26-07-2012 at 13:29 (Things to do with kids in Brisbane)
Delightfully warm and funny, And If We All Lived Together? is a beautiful, memorable film about the longevity of friendship. A group of life-long friends choose to enter into a commune-style arrangement to help care for each other in their twilight years, rather than spend their retiring days in an aged care facility. Jane Fonda is sensational as Jeanne, with first-class performances from the entire cast. Take your grandma (providing she doesn't mind a bit of sex talk and nudity).

  3. Film Review: Magic Mike

by , 25-07-2012 at 11:08 (Things to do with kids in Brisbane)
If you're planning a girls' night out, then you could do worse than spend it with the likes of Channing Tatum, Matthew McConaughey and their hot-bodded pals. Magic Mike, in case you haven't heard, is about male strippers, and provides the right amount of eye candy to allow you to get close and almost personal with some spectacular abs. The dancing is fun and raunchy, with McConaughey's performance as the oily team-leader being the sauciest of the lot. The only downside to Magic Mike is the storyline, ...
  4. Film Review: Hysteria

by , 24-07-2012 at 13:08 (Things to do with kids in Brisbane)
Fun and cheeky, Hysteria is the story of the invention of the vibrator. It's hilarious in that wink-wink-nudge-nudge kind of way that British comedy is famous for. There's nothing offensive or lewd about Hysteria so don't be afraid to take your mum (like I did) or your husband. Maggie Gyllenhaal is amazing as a pre-Suffragette hothead with a cultured British accent that sounds exactly like Emma Thompson. Hugh Dancy is cute and lovable as Doctor Granville, the inventor of the blessed device, but ...

  5. Film Review: The Dark Knight Rises

by , 19-07-2012 at 12:10 (Things to do with kids in Brisbane)
Judging from reviews already circulating, critics seem to like The Dark Knight Rises more than the general public, which must surely be a first for a comic-book adaptation. For me, The Dark Knight Rises is a great big film with great big problems. Some qualities of the film are breath-taking, while others are confusing and a little puerile.

In my full review (which is entirely free of spoilers!), I've tried to present a balanced reflection on the good bits and the not-so-good bits, ...
