Parenting in the news

What is making news in the world of parenting

  1. Weaning from Breastfeeding

It was really important to me as a nutritionist to exclusively breast feed my baby for the first six months of her life. Despite this I was surprised at how many times I almost automatically wanted to offer her food or share what I was eating with her! The World Health Organisation and also the Breastfeeding Association recommend exclusive breastfeeding for the first 6 months.

    Why?

Primarily it's got to do with their immune system and giving them the best opportunity ...

  2. Morning tea with the PM

by , 17-06-2012 at 09:29 (The Official Bub Hub Blog!)

On Friday my boss Hilary had morning tea with the Prime Minister.

I had morning tea with my nan ... but this isn't about me.

Hilary was invited to Kirribilli House with a handful of other woman from the parenting/internet world. Obviously it wasn't long before the hashtag #PMtea was created and tweets were being sent over tea and macaroons.

Here's a photo of Hilary and PM Julia Gillard.

  3. Allergy researchers call for better food labelling

by , 30-05-2012 at 21:41 (The Official Bub Hub Blog!)

My gorgeous little neice recently had a mild reaction to peanuts.

She is currently in the process of having further testing done but in the meantime we've been told to be vigilant when giving her food.

Well that is easier said than done.

Ever cautious while she was in my care recently I began reading labels before giving her the same food as my little boy. Rice crackers? Nope, they may contain traces of peanuts ... Cereal snacks? Nope, same reason.

  4. How much do you know about food allergy?

How much do you know about food allergies?

Did you know that the number of children with food allergies continues to rise and that we've seen a boom in the past 20 years?

Did you also know that is Food Allergy Awareness Week this week?

We've been chatting with the people at the Murdoch Childrens Research Institute about some new research they have conducted on food allergies.

  5. Time Magazine and THAT cover ... what do you think?

by , 11-05-2012 at 11:59 (The Official Bub Hub Blog!)

If Time Magazine's goal was to create discussion they have certainly achieved it with this month's cover.

If you haven't seen it it shows an almost-four-year-old standing on a small chair breastfeeding from his mother.

It is very staged (as are all magazine covers) and deliberately confronting in it's use of pose, eye contact and clothing (they want to sell copies after all!).

    See for yourself ...
