View Full Version : Back/kidney area pain?

Last night I woke up to a strong pain around the right kidney area (I think). It was just under the back/side rib cage down to the hip and eveloped almost that entrie area on one side. I hobbled to the bathroom but nothing happened or helped. It eased only a bit. The pain was stong enough that it made me feel ill and I dry reached. I just went back to bed (didn't know what else to do) and it comtinued to ease. Even now though, this morning, while it doesn't hurt it does feels like something went on there and is slightly stiff/sore.
As strange as it may sound I'm really unsure if it was muscular or internal. It wasn't too sharp like a cramp or stitch, but strong and prolonged. Do you think it was just a cramp? I was sleeping on my back so don't think I was in an awkward position or anything. Should I expect to feel RLP or other stretching there? And would it be that painful? It was a bit alarming, but thankfully didn't last too long.
If it happens again I'll go see my Doc straight away.

I could be wrong but I'm sure that's one of the areas I was told about to watch for pain as I was at high risk of developing preeclampsia. (Which I did end up developing, I was induced for uncontrolable High Blood Pressure though.) I'd go to the drs just to be sure. :) Megan

Edited to say that I think it was supposed to be more at the front though.

Thanks Megan. I think I will go to the Doc for my checkup a bit ealier (this week instead of next) and ask her about it.
I'll also do some research online on what you've mentioned.

For god's sake DON'T GOOGLE!!! You'll scare yourself silly.

Make an appt with a dr asap. Any pain such as this should be investigated by a medical professional.

LOL, ok, Mel . . no googling . . . well, not much anyway:rolleyes:

I'll leave it up to my Doc to diagnose preeclamsia.
I think it may be more kidney related. When I woke with the pain I did need to pee. So I went and actually thought that would relieve it, but it didn't do anything immediately so I dismissed it as being related. After a few minutes the pain did start to very slowly ease. I thought perhaps simply the walk to the bathroom had helped or something.
But for a while now, sometimes after I pee it feels like my bladder is not empty even though I've finished. I thought this was just a normal feeling from the growing pressure in there on the bladder. Has anyone else felt this too?

Anyway, I'll talk to my Doc and see what she says. I'll go and get some cranberry juice today and see if that helps any.

how did you go? I have just found this thread but get the exact same pain every second morning when I wake up!

I thought it was my kidney but thought if it was an issue with my kidney i wouldnt be peeing regularly and it wouldnt be clear (sorry if TMI) so put it down to muscular or baby sitting on something he/she shouldnt be in there.

What side do you sleep on? Mine is worse if I sleep on my right side but I have to flip from side to side through the night as my legs go numb and I get hip pain  ah the joys of it all!1

Hoping everything went well for you at the doctor!:hugs:

i went to the GP today as thought I had a UTI and it looks like I may have an infection. So am on antibiotics - Kefflex i think they are. Doc & Pharmacist said safe in pregnancy.

The other day had sore lower back pain and it freaked me out and got myself into the doc as I have suspected an infection for few days over last week.

Anyway I get results on Saturday, but in meantime I am taking the antibiotics and hoping it goes away soon!

I havent' had my check up yet (was out of town yesterday). I have not had a repeat of the pain.
I sleep both sides and back so not sure if it's position related.
Sorry - will let you know when I see my Doc.
