Hi all

I don't think my baby has eczema, but he has bad cradle cap, dry skin and red rashes under his arms, neck and groin. Every bath wash I use dries him out more and although he is too young to tell me, I am sure dry skin irritates him.

What does everyone use on their babies for bath times and hair washing? I need something that is gentle and won't irritate his skin, so I figured it would be best to ask mums of eczema affected kids.

TIA

I'd suggest going to your local health food shop and buying something natural and gentle for baby they are bound to have something.

i use alchemy baby shampoo and conditioner and i use an all natural baby body wash.
Also during the winter months normally after i've bathed and dried bub i'll normally put vaseline on her eczema.

is the skin under his arms neck etc in the fatty parts of bubs? i know dd under her arms was always sore and red but she got excema which didnt help and i found bathing her in qv and then putting some talc here seemed to ease it.

We use a health food shop shampoo as well cant think of the name....will run and have a look later but they have about 4 in our one these are great and really work for dd :) and ds

Try some baby oil on the cradle cap though even bathing inthe morning, then leaving it on all day and combing it out that night and bathing again leave it on for a while :)

there was an excellent thread ages ago and I tried the remedy and it worked :fingerscrossed: it was under Excema.

mix pure tea tree oil from a health food shop, tiny drop with about 6 x drops of almond oil, and apply to dry skin. Almond oil is a base, so use freely just be careful with the tea tree oil. test a small bit first if you are worried.

For cradle cap just soak babys head with baby oil or the almond oil, before sleep and gently lift cradle cap when soft, I used a very fine comb, very very gently, don't force it.

Hope this helps

hoping i am not overstepping the mark, however i would not recommend using vaseline due to the ingrediants in it and it is more of a barrier type cream than anything else.

I use Hamilton Bath Oil. It softens the water and makes the skin softer after bathing. If I have to wash her hair I use Gaia shampoo which is an organic one. After bathing I use QV cream and Dermeze, as well as the occasional steroid in the worse spots.

I use two but the one that is widely available is called Natural Instinct-Natural Baby Bath Wash
(certified organic herbs)
It says
This product contains NO:
sodium Lauryl Sulphate
Petroleum by product
Artificial Fragrances
Artificial Colours
Harsh Detergents
Animal Derivatives
Harmfull Chemicals

Natural Instinct products are made from plant based ingredients with 100% pure oils and organic herbs.

It costs me $6.95 for a 250ml bottle
I purchase mine at a chemist/priceline

Thank you for your advice everyone. I have been looking at Gaia Baby and Aromababy products, but they are a little expensive (Aromababy esp.). I guess that is just the price you pay for not using chemicals. I'll go and have a look at the local health store and chemist and see what products they have.

is the skin under his arms neck etc in the fatty parts of bubs?

Yes the red rashes are in the fatty parts, he is a chubby bubby. It is hard to let it dry out because of all the rolls  But I noticed the rash now has a scaley border around it. I hope it's not bothering him.

I use QV bath wash and the QV bath oil.

Fantastic if you ask me. It helps with dry skin and cradle cap.
DS had both of those and after using the QV for a few days it all disappeared.
It's now our usual bath wash for bubby. It smells nice too.
It's also suitable for adults.
Available from the chemist.

I use Alpha kerri Oil and it really moisturises Bub's skin. I use an organic shampoo and conditioner from a health shop as it had no sls. It's a good price $10 for 500ml

Hi. I have an Eczema baby. I too use Dermeeze after the bath from top to toe. It is fantastic and my DS pead said that it is very safe, can get in their eyes nose and mouth no worries (I have a wiggly worm so applying it is an adventure). When his Eczema is really bad, I dermeeze the parts before he goes in the bath as it acts as a sort of barrier.

I use QV wash in the bath but might try the Hamilton Bath Oil as suggested above for something diff. None of these obviously have a nice smell (nor a bad one) due to the prefumes so thats a shame but they do a great job. Oh, and when he is reallt bad, out comes the cortisone!

Hi, i am backing up QV, it is great!! Also used alpha keri, altho i know some eczema suffers get the whole burning skin when they get into the bath... but it worked great for DS (very mild case tho).

Any Johnsons products were bad for my DS if that helps

QV was always great with my daughter. They had a flare up version too that was great when the eczema got angry. With my son, he doesn't have any problems but cradle cap which I find any shampoo tends to create so with him its always been curash in the bath.

I haven't read the other replies, but I would stop using anything on him except water with a bit of QV bath oil in it.

Only bath him every 2nd or third day and make them quick ones as the water dries out the skin.

We use Gaia too - I love the smell of it, and we haven't had any issues with dry or flaky skin or cradle cap or anything like that since. And I have one chubby boy! :):)

Believe it or not I just bathed ds2 in plain water and massaged with almond oil after each bath and he has beautiful skin. Just recently I have been using the Natural Instincts body wash as a bubble bath for both boys. DS1 suffers from excema and his skin is going really well using that. I use it to shampoo his hair too. We have also had success with the Aveeno wash, but I decided I was after something natural.
You could try putting a little cornflour(as opposed to baby powder) in his creases to help absorb the moisture.

i just wanted to add -
I'm sure the QV works great for some, but I would jsut trial it first if you decide to go down that path. We tried it on DS1 and he reacted quite badly to it and recently when we went to the allergy clinic at the Childrens Hospital, they told us to steer clear of it. Just my experience though.

For about the last 6 months I've been using stuff from the Pediatril range of the brand Eau Thermale Avene and have found it all to be excellent. DS' skin has cleared right up and we don't need to use his steroid cream at all any more! I particularly like the cleansing foam. The main ingrediant in these products is water from a spring in the south of France. I bought mine from the pharmacy.

there is a lovely range called 'Gaia' which is all organic, and it was created by a mum who's baby had eczema. there is bath wash, shampoo, moisteriser, nappy rash cream, massage oil and a natural baby powder (talc free). i use it even though ds doesn't have eczema and it's lovely

I haven't used it myself but I'm pretty sure you should be able to get it through the pharmacy.

This is exactly what we do- baths will always dry out my kid's skin. We only use water on it's own or some QV or Dermaveen oil on a washer to add moisture.

Actually, I really recommend the Dermaveen oil- comes in 1 litre packs from the pharmacy and works out to be very affordable. Active ingredient- collidial oatmeal. Very soothing and natural. Fixed Ariene's cradle cap too.
