Hi everyone i would just like to announce that my son is on the move!
looks like he is a bum shuffler. He seems to be getting from one side of the room to the other by going from sitting to all fours to sitting again. The chn informed me this is not a development stage and i should be getting him to comando crawl instead. Well good for her he just gets so upset on his stomach anyone else out there with a bum shuffler? if so how long were they doing this for?

What a cow !!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Every baby develops differently sooo many babes never crawl, some only commando crawl & some only bum shuffle !
My partner was a bum shuffler & he turned out alright ( well sorta :p ) !!!!!! Not sure how long he did it for though & thats the thing again every bub is different !!!
My little boof only does a commando type roll type shimmy across the floor & he is 10mths old !!!! I was worried at first but i now see he is happy getting around his way & who am i to stop him ?! Ive pretty much thrown all the developent stages out the window & letting my bubs be who he is !
Im lucky my CHN's are great & never bother about this sorta stuff but im sure there are heaps on here who will tell you all their bad stories !
Good luck with him now getting into everything  :D

From working in CC for 8 years i have seen ALLLLL developmental differences!!

Bum scooting is actually not that rare- believe it or not! And all those children learnt how to walk just fine!!! So worry not!

The reason MACH nurse push crawling is so that both sides of the brain are working- apparently it has something to do with reading in the future!????? Someone please correct me if i am wrong.

But we got told in a course that with the non-traditional- crawlers you can get them using both sides by playing games- ie cycling the legs, crossing the legs over each other... crisscrossing legs etc

But as i said out of all my bum crawlers i never had one that was unreasonably late with walking!!

Each baby is unique- hey some bubs never "crawl" they just walk one day!!

How cute!

All of the bubs that I know that have been bum shufflers have turned out to be intelligent and co-ordinated young kids so i wouldn't be worried!

I think they are adorable, bouncing along on their little bottoms!

Hehehe yeah thats was how the oldies were taught & i think thats why many of them stick with it now today only to cause grief to new mums !!!!
What you said in the second part is the way they tell now especially asking if bubs passes things from one hand to the other ! You will get driven mad by these questions LOL !
This ensures bubs is using both sides of the brain :D

Thanks for all the great replies!
It really is quite funny to watch he gets really quite far but its good because it is a pretty slow way to get around. His fine motor skills are quite advanced the chn said so im not real worried! puts a whole new meaning on watching them though into everything!

My DD is a bum shuffler and she's going fine - her fine motor skills are really good too! I say don't worry about the nurse - it's not like you can exactly "force" a child to crawl after all! Just enjoy how funny it looks!

hey joshiesmum
my DD has been bum shuffling for over 5 months (since 11.5 months) and we are not worried in the slightest. it is very cute too!!!

her fine motor skills and social skills are really good. we do not worry.

my DH has a theory that bum shufflers are really very intelligent because they have figured out a more efficient way of getting around that frees up their hands and allows them to see everything around them!!!! they are usually late walkers too, which he says is also clever as later walkers have fewer falls!!!!!!!!!!! :D

his theory about intelligence and bum shuffling must be right because i was a bum shuffler from 12-18 months of age!!!!!! hehehehe :)

BTW just wanted to add, did you know that in some languages there are surnames which literally mean "bum shuffler"...???!!! can you imagine......["Mr John Bumshuffler, your order is ready" !!!]
