Hi

My wife and I are soon to be parents for the 1st time and are trying to figure out a lot of stuff. Now this my sound like a silly question but can anyone tell us regarding Sterilsing bottles - What do we do after sterilisering them? Do we wipe them out and just put the lid on or what? How long do they remain Ok unused before they need to be sterilised again?

Sorry to ask what is probably a silly question....but can some one please help

hey :)

dont worry about silly questions on bubhub :) nothing here is silly!

congrats on the pregnancy :D

I use a microwave steriliser...

I dont wipe out the bottles... I just shake out the excess water and put the lids straight on - I also keep all sterilised bottles in the fridge... according to the ladies in hospital (midwife) ... sterilisation lasts 24 hrs- I resterilise all my bottles at nighttime.. once bubs has settled..

hope others on bubhub can correct or confirm what I have said :)

Hi,
you can either go with the Milton method. I bought a huge snaplock container for $15 ( was cheaper than the milton kit) and a bottle of milton, clean bottles and teats with a bottle brush in warm soapy water and rinse, sterilise for at least 15 mins or just leave them in the solution, changing every 24 hrs.
Microwave- buy a microwave steriliser , I also use this method, I have a avent microwave steriliser, put in cleaned bottles as above, i think its 200mls water and put bottles and teats in the top, put lid on and microwave for 7 mins, take out, put bottles together and store in refrigerator til use. Or you can buy an electric steriliser which does what the this method does anyway.

I must say I prefer microwave method now (bub is 4 months) I always used Milton from birth to 3 months....don't know why really but my kids are still kicking:)
Hope that helps...hope it makes sense!
Cheers!

Hi crackers,

Welcome to Bubhub:D

In my first week of sterilising bottles i would put them in the fridge with lids on in a spot on the door that was Max's spot....but as time got on i left the bottles in there and just changed water solution everyday, rinsed out bottles in coldwater and stuck them back in clean solution. The teats went white after a while so stuck the teats in the fridge left bottles in steriliser..

Hope this helps...

I bought a steam bench top steraliser, it is the best thing I have bought.
It was about $80 but all I do is wash the bottles and throw everything in there, it fits up to 12 bottles and teats. I make my bottles up straight away after it has cooked for 7 minutes.

I use The Milton method as mentioned above. I bought the kit from Big W. I rinse the bottles out after every feed, then once a day I was them in warm soapy water and sterilise. I always have a couple of bottles ready to go in the fridge.

Hope this helps

If you want to go with the milton method ... the cheaper and just as effective way is to use one litre of water with 10mls of ordinary bleach in it ... this was used at the hospital where I had my ds and they say that it is just as safe.

I used to boil bottles and leave them covered with a clean teatowel to air-dry then I put them into the fridge until I needed them. I didn't have many bottles, so they all got sterilised each day as I used them all each day!
