Welcome to the world, Ebanee Jade, my 2nd beautiful daughter (sister to Annika) was born on Saturday 26 May 2007 at 3.35am weighing 4.88kg (10 pounds 12 ounces) and measuring 53cm long.
As some of you (esp May mums) may be aware, my 2nd pregnancy wasn't exactly what you would describe as "textbook". It was noted at my 28wk visits that I had developed an irregular heartbeat, which caused problems as my pregnancy progressed including dizziness, palpitations, fainting, etc. I had a number of tests done and the Dr's were concerned about the stress of birth and afterwards on my heart. For ages it was undecided how I was going to have this baby until I basically put my foot down and insisted on a VB. The only downside was that I had to report to the hospital as soon as I showed signs of labour so that I could be put on IV fluids and monitored.
My due date was May 25 and on that day I had decided that I was going to take matters into my own hands, so I drank the dreaded castor oil. DH was asleep on the couch so I snuck down to the shops and quickly came home and forced the horrible stuff down the hatch. Maybe an hour later I was chained to the toilet, and stayed there for the next 2 hours cursing myself for my impatience. However my efforts paid off because as soon as the runs stopped the contractions started coming at 20 minute intervals. I told DH something was happening but didn't fess up until another hour later about the castor oil.
At this point MIL turned up and I was having strong contractions but didn't say anything cause I didn't want her getting excited over a false labour. I sat on the couch biting my cheeks with each contraction before excusing myself to have a shower. Finally after an hour she left and I rang the hospital to tell them that I was down to 4 minute intervals (and got in trouble for not calling earlier). They pretty much told me to get there ASAP. The problem was the DD1 was at FIL's place and they were already late getting her home. DH rand his dad who said they were inthe car about 15 mins away. Dilemma time.
As we live no more than 5km from the hospital I decided to drive myself there. I sat at the end of the driveway, rode out a contraction and then took off. I made it just in time to find a park and walk through the doors of the hospital before the next one rocked through me. I walked through it up to the Birthing Suite where I was whisked into a room and looked over. My heart was all over the place (as expected) but it settled as soon as I had the drip put in and fluids pumped through me. Not once did I mention to the staff that I had done the castor oil thing because I was scared I'd get into trouble. DH turned up to find me strapped to an ECG and a CTG with an IV fluids bag and stark naked. I was only about 3cm at this stage so wasn't allowed in the bath in case it slowed things down. Instead I jumped in the shower to try and take the pain away. We realised at this stage that bub was slightly posterior so there was quite a bit of pain in my back.
After 3 hours I'd had enough. I was tired and hurting so I asked for an epidural. This itself took 2 hours before everyone was available. Eventually the epidural was set up and I was feeling a lot better. I was only 4cm by this stage so the midwife arranged to put me on a syntocin drip to try and speed things along. We also discussed breaking my waters.
Just as she was setting up to break my waters it started to drizzle. DH opened the door to the balcony to have a look at the rain when all of a sudden it started to bucket down, I felt a pop and my waters broke at that exact same second!! At first I thought that maybe I had wet the bed because of the rain (didn't have the catheter in yet) but when it kept coming I realised what had happened.
I took advantage of my pain free state to catch a few hours sleep, as did DH who was stretched out on the mat on the floor. The midwife came in 2 hours later and woke me up to tell me that it was time to push!! I woke up DH by yelling at him and then it was all hands on deck. I wasn't getting anywhere lying on my back so they turned me over and I was up on all fours over the end of the bed. I had about 3 or 4 good pushes then all of a sudden I felt her moving down the birth canal on her own so I gave a couple of deep pushes and out she came. Her head was out but then her shoulders got stuck and it was panic stations. The midwife grabbed and pulled her out by the head, saw she was blue and quickly they resuscitated her. By the time the Dr had responded to the emergency call she was turning pink and breathing on her own. I was still stuck over the end of the bed at this stage so all I knew was what I could hear being said. Eventually DH came to my side and told me we had a big beautiful girl. They turned me back over and let me watch her getting cleaned and weighed, then delivered my placenta before placing her on my chest. She took straight to the boobie and stayed there for 40 mins.
I was in shock when they told me she was 10 pounds 12 ounces, moreso when they said that I had delivered her without any need for stitches as I didn't even get a graze! I was lucky enough to have a very speedy recovery and we left hospital 2 days later.
Ebanee is now just over 2 weeks old and I'm loving her to pieces. At her checkup yesterday she weighed in at 5.2kg and measured at 58cm long. She's a big girl with a hearty appetite. Annika is fascinated with her but hasn't shown any real signs of jealousy.
Well that's our story. Thanks for reading and here's some pics of Ebanee minutes after arriving.
