hi all,
bought a jolly jumper which we all love as it keeps 6 months old entertained and quiet for a few minutes. but have been told that they are bad for spine because they are bouncing on tip toes and not always using a flat foot. Can it delay the normal development of crawling and walking. What are your opinions???

Absolutely fine! Andrew loved his from about 3-7 months.

Just don't use it as a babysitter and leave them in for extended periods of time. I think we had 10 or 15 min spurts, once or twice a day maybe.

Its great fun for them, good exercise, helps them with their coordination.

It didn't hinder Andrew at all in the way he learned to crawl or stand.

I was at a friends house and she was borrowing my JJ for her son but she had the length too low and her DS was boucing too much and too fast and the connection that goes on the door frame came off and her DS fell to the ground. Lucky she had a doona down on the ground as they have tiles.

As long as the JJ isn't too low you sould be fine. I don't think they would sell them if they cause problems with children's spines.

The jolly jumper is great and I haven't heard anyone have any dramas with them... My DS loves his and it definitely didn't stop or hinder his mobility... He start crawling at 5 months and is now 8 months (tomorrow) and is pullinghimself to a stand at every moment.. Actually, today is climbed up the side table in his room...

As Nicole said, just keep the time in it at short periods and you should be fine..

Good luck

I have heard that some physios hate them... but I cant wait till JAck is old enough to use one!!! - my brother and I both had one as kids - and mum has some fantastic photos of us having a great time....

I dont think that any kids toy/ object is absolutely safe.. if you get the measurements right - I think the risks of things going wrong are pretty low...

I dont think it delays any development... kids SOOO love being upright like a 'grown up !!'

I agree, as long as the height measurements are right bubs will be fine. Always keep an eye out though and don't leave them in it for too long. My DD loved it! And it didn't hinder her development - she crawled at 6months and was walking at 12 months! No probs at all!

my aunty works at a physio and she advised me not to use the jj after i had been for months... as babies they work with who are tippie-toed have used a jj... it is bad for their feet because they bouce so fast only their toes touch the ground... apparently walkers are to blame also because they walk too fast on their toes...

I think a lot of the bad things we hear about JJ and walkers could possibly be die hard wives tales? How many people in our groups of friends had them when they were tots? Just about everyone! If these recreational god sends caused problems, why aren't all our friends suffering the "bowed legs" etc? It's up to the individual and what their bub likes I reckon. I also strongly believe that such toys stimulate their little brains and help develop the senses and balance. Is a jolly jumper so much different from standing your baby on your lap or the floor and bouncing him or bouncing himself even when still very young and standing on TToes? But yes, mind the height, they do have to be kept on their toes or they will bring it down.

I used to watch my daughter in her jj and didnt actually use her tippy toes to push off its kinda like walking and running or jumping on the spot u start off on your feet and then push off into the air.I think they are safe dd loved it and when i needed a break i would put her in it. It obviously taught her a few things as she is 9 months and walking.:)

both my older kids looooved their jolly jumper. they used to only be in it for about 10 min (and would get tired and need a kip). they are 10 and 9 now and have had no probs whatsoever with their feet/gait/legs. i used it clamped over the door frame and never had any probs either.

It is true, physio therapists HATE them, as well as walkers.
Emily's physio said that at the age that parents put them in their back muscles and spine are not mature enough for the sort of pressure these products place on them. Kind of like when a you support a new born's head because their neck muscles are not strong enough to hold the weight of their head, same goes for their spines, they need support, these products only place unnecessary strain on it.
I personally don't like them for those reasons and also because some people tend to use them as babysitters. And tend to use them at a far too young age. I had a friend who used to put her baby in a walker nearly all day just so she didn't have to keep putting him back on the mat after he rolled off. And I know of someone else who had her son in a walker from the age of 3 months!

Actually, baby walkers are quite the controversial topic, Choice wrote a rather interesting piece about them:

They are absolutely brilliant and used JJ's for my last four children, and will definately be getting another one for this one.

Doesnt matter what room i'm in, I just unclick the JJ and hang it in another room, just brilliant, baby's always with me, i know if i pop to the loo he/she is safe and they just LOVE it.

Highly recommend it.

i have noticed a few people have commented about bubs being put in jj's too young. what age is recommended to start using a JJ? or does it go on developmental stages and at what stage?
