Aaarrgghhhh we have hit the dreaded "Whys??"

A general convo between myself and 3 yr old Samuel

"What's this Mum?"

"Its a potato peeler"

"why?"

"because you use it to peel the skin of potatos"

"But Why?"

"Because if I want to cook the potatos sometimes I need to take the skin off first"

"But Why Mum?"

*clenched teeth* "Because sometimes you want the skin off your potato and when you do you use a potato peeler"

so on so forth until I run away screaming and pulling my hair out :banghead:

So how long should this stage last ????

PLEASE tell me it doesnt last long :fingerscrossed:

 Your post made me laugh...

I totally feel ur pain hun.. My DS is 4 and we are still going thru it.. less intense now, but his just so interested in how EVERYTHING works in the world... no make that the universe.

Its so cute but can sometimes grate on the nerves.

My trick is to put music on and dance.. its the only thing that stops the questions being fired my way.. gives me a break for 5 minutes to re-fuel :D

BUT WHHHYYYYYYY...????????

Why?????
Because y is a crooked letter and you can't straighten it!

It would infuriate me as a kid when my mother would say this. Now as a mother I say the same thing after DS asks why for the 100th time. It sometimes works and they stop asking why well for a bout 1/2hour at least:rolleyes:

Don't worry it will end, can't remember how long it took with DD but it did end.

Finally you can feel my frustration! I have been here for a while. I have found that anything I can't answer, we go and look up on the internet. The time that takes usually distracts her for long enough to forget the question.

See, I've got a plan for this.

As soon as Asher gets to that stage, I'm going to pre-empt him.

"Look daddy I drew a horsie"

"Why?"

Rinse and repeat.

We have this too.

My DH is the sort of person that believes you have to answer each question until the very end. It's challenging isn't it?

They learn so much at this age :D

Tell me about it!! it is soooooo frustrating but then I know what they're going thru as we all did it to our parents too... its funny coz when u say the actual answer to why and they still don't get it so u have to repeat but say it differently.. sometimes I say for example that potato incident I would say something like would u like to eat the skin?? if they say no u're in luck and then say hmm thats why! its the only way to get them to be quiet til the next why!!! :D:laughing:

my mum used to fully aswer the question

ex:

"mum was is the sky blue"?

mum: because it is

me:why?

mum: because it is i dont know why the sky is blue,no one knows it just is and that is all i know about it..and i dont know why i dont know more but i dont simple as that.

me: ok

i remeber having that conversation

Lol! We've had this going on for several weeks now! Must be a 3 year old thing - I naively thought it wouldn't start till a lot further down the track!

I use to answer all the time but now I just say why why why why in a funny way back to her.. DD laughs and moves onto something else.

Hayley doesn't say why she says "whats that" every 5 seconds even if she KNOWS what it is. :banghead:

Fingers crossed for you that it doesn't last long there Tracey. I remember bracing myself when DD started asking at 3 years old, but at 3.5 now she seems to have tapered off. Now she thinks she has the right answer all the time, and there's no arguing her logic!

 Here's hoping Samuel grows out of it! If he is like Tristan, he will but if he is anything like my Ella, look out because it just gets more complicated! She is turning 7 in a few months and her why's have graduated to the more complex variety. For example, do you know the television ad where the man tells his son about the great Wall of China being built to keep the rabbits out? Well, Ella would continue on with, "but why were the rabbits there to start with!":laughing:

You would get along well with our vet. When his daughter would ask him questions starting with "Daaaad, why does........." , he would reply, "But how do you reaaalllllly know I'm your dad?" :p

Oh, and she was quite a bit older, early teens.

But Tracey, why do you ask?

hehe your naughty !!

Hayley doesn't say why she says "whats that" every 5 seconds even if she KNOWS what it is.

ahhh that comes just before the "why" stage so look out !! :p

Now she thinks she has the right answer all the time, and there's no arguing her logic!

Hmm I can see that happening a bit here already.. sometimes when he asks me "why" and I explain it I get told "no, mum" and then given the "proper" explanation...

You should tell your son, don't know ask dad

lmao yes I do when he is home !!

OOh Tracey... does that mean we are close to this stage? Oh boy *braces ones self*.......

lmao Becky ! Good luck ! I tell you there is something lovely about a non speaking child !!

but if he is anything like my Ella, look out because it just gets more complicated!

My girlfriend has sooo many issues with her 5 year old... he keeps asking really complex things like "what is eternity?" and when she "tries" to explain it he says "But Mummy that just doesnt make any sense... explain it again!" Boy has she got some trouble on her hands !! lmao

Thanks again everyone
