hey all,
i am just wondering if someone has gone through the experience of their baby having a dilated kidney?
my baby is 2 months old and she had a dilated kidney when i was pregnant and the doctors said that its more likely that her kidney will return to normal size when born.
When she was born she had an ultrasound and her kidney is still swollen. the ultrsound people couldnt tell me what that meant so i am just wondering if anyone has or is going through this and what is the likely outcome? and what do they do to treat it?

Hi,
My son had a block between his kidney and bladder on the left side which was picked up at my 20 week scan. His kidney became dilated as a result of the pressure and the fact that the other side had to over work.. It didnt clear up on its own. He had his 1st operation when he was three days old which didnt work.. another when he was 2 weeks old and his final op at a few months.. It has now resolved as it was unblocked and therefor the swelling went down and all it normal..
Not sure if it is a definite block in your daughter or perhaps the tube(not the technical term lol) has a kink in it which they are hoping will grow out and resume back to normal..
The fact that nothings been discussed with you such as operations i would assume the dilation isnt to bad and/or the block is minor and the function of the kidney/bladder is close to normal so there is no need to worry..
Talk to your doctor if your worried hun.. All the best :hugs:

my son had the same similiar to goose they called his kidney reflux where the tube to the kidney from the bladder was blocked. He had to have dye injected into his willy and then he was xrayed to see how bad it was, thankfully after a course of antibiotics he didnt need surgery (we were told he had downs symdrome at first) now he needs 12monthly check ups but his nearly 5 now and all good so far, we just have to make sure his not dehydrated :)

I've been through it with my first born. I've replied to about 6 of these types of posts on here and never heard back from the OP's (I must scare them or something), so I wont go into too much detail as I don't have time anyway. But if you want to know more, I'll tell you.
Jacob had a blockage in hir ureters, surgery at 3wks and 7wks.

thanks heaps for the replies, i am hopin that all she need is antibiotics to fix the problem, when i was pregnant they said it was a reflux problem. the stupid hospital "forgot" to book a follow up appointment with a pediatrition, now i have to wait over a month! my daughter is a normal happy little girl, it doesnt seem to bother her. Did your babies cry more or were in pain because of their kidney?

Jacob was a happy, normal baby. He was put on antibiotics at 1 day old, so I don't know if this made a difference or not.

There is another member on here whose son has it, his name is Jacob too.
a few weeks old now but just noticed this thread...
...it was first picked up that my DS had a dilated left kidney when I was sent off for US at 41.5weeks. Another US @ 1 week showed moderate-severe dilation in renal pelvis of left kidney. Paed prescribed antibiotics but we wanted a second opinion. Antibiotics don't fix the problem but are IN CASE it is reflux IN CASE this causes a urinary tract infection. I didn't want to pump my bub full of antibiotics just 'IN CASE'. Anyway, we moved interstate when he was 2 weeks old & saw a new paed who agreed starting antibiotics without knowing actual problem was a bit hasty. Had another US which suggested not reflux (which is where urine flows back up from the bladder to the kidney hence a high chance of infection) but rather a blockage at the junction between the kidney & ureter causing a build-up of urine in the kidney. UTI not as likely with this second condition so no need for antibiotics - my mother's instincts were right.
Anyway, DS is now 5months and had another US this week with no improvement (left kidney still significantly dilated but right one 100% fine) so we are having another scan next week which involves injecting a dye to track just how much backward pressure the buildup of urine is placing on the kidney. If severe, this pressure can lead to kidney damage over time.
But it doesn't bother him at all as far as we can tell, he is 100% fine for now. The issue is more one of possible long term damage if doesn't resolve itself or not fixed with an op. But at least we are aware of the problem & monitoring it so we are in a position to act (if necessary) before this damage occurs.

Thats what my Ds pead told me, he said if your aware of the problem and monitor things then all should be ok, touch wood but he said when you ignore these things they can come back twice as bad thus resulting i surgery etc. GLad to hear someone else got this view too :D

WOW 3 of us with Jacobs with it.. Thats freaky..
Just had the call from C's paed re results from his scan yesterday (which was not very nice at all, poor C has bruised wrists where they unsuccessfully searched for veins to insert a canula :crying: to inject the dye). His left kidney is showing significantly reduced function and we have been referred to a children's urologist/surgeon. The earliest appointment isn't until 23rd July. I wish it was sooner. I know he's fine and worst case will probably be a very simple op but can't help worrying that there might already be some kidney damage. Now I'm thankful he was 11 days overdue - otherwise I probably wouldn't have had the ultrasound that they picked the problem up on.
