You have to go to the dentist!!
My FIL didn't go for some time and bacteria from his teeth travelled to a valve in his heart and he had multiple small strokes and ended up having to have open heart surgery to have the valve replaced.
They pin pointed the initial problem was the bacteria in his mouth.
Dental care is very very important.
Go to the dentist!!!!!;)

Did that scare you enough to make you go?
True story though...
Sorry should also point out that it is apparently extremely rare...

I too am PETRIFIED of the dentist! I finally plucked up the courage about 7 months ago and went for a checkup to be told that I need root canal. Yeah - apparantly a filling I had done (the last time I went - 9 years ago) was done wrong and under the tooth was all decayed. So at the moment I am in the midst of getting root canal finished.

After going to the dentist though, the relief is incredible! You can just relax and say, yay - I did it!

I think the SCARIEST thing about the dentist - is the BILL at the end

Hi Samsmum,

I too am petrified of the dentist. Has something to do with one burning my lips when I was at school. (Let me point out that this was 25 years ago, so don't panic please!)

On Friday, I pinched one of the kids lollies and ripped out a filling. I thought ok it's going to be fine. NOT! Pain during the night meant getting up the courage to ring a dentist Saturday morning. When you ring, please let the receptionist/nurse know you are petrified and do they cater for such a person. I did and they were fantastic. I had a lovely lady who showed me exactly what she was going to do and how before she did it. I came out of there a lot happier than when I went in I can tell you. Make sure you tell them as they won't know how to help you if they don't know of your fears.

Good Luck. All will be well. If you can give birth, you can do anything! Remember that. :) :)

Well I'd love to sink the boot in but I'm with you .... and would rather give birth than go to the dentist. I went last year for the first time in over 10 years and required 4 fillings:eek: That said Samsmum, I can now eat on both sides and there is no longer any pain. So go already.

The relief after going far outweighs the discomfort of going, IMO.

I had dramas a few months back and put the dentist off and off and off. I was popping panadol just to go to sleep at night! Not very good at all.

Two visits to the dentist later, all was well in the world of my mouth, and I can enjoy eating on both sides of my mouth again!! Hooray! Knock on wood, I haven't had any problems since.

GO GO GO!! Before its too late!!

Anytime I felt truly horrible in the chair, I focused and tried to remember Andrews birth in tiny detail..the pain, the agony etc etc. I had a baby with no drugs - dental work WITH drugs is a walk in the park! :)

Dentists have a very high suicide rate because they think nobody likes them.

So, save a life...go today.

Tracey, I don't know where abouts in Melbourne you are, but I go to a good one in Dingley:

Dr Russell O'Sullivan
Dingley Dental Group
134 Centre Dandenong Rd
Dingley

Ph: (03) 9551 2633

I moved from the UK 3 years ago - didn't know who to go to - but a friend recommended him. Saw him on her advice and was very happy.

Good Luck!

Jackie

There are dentists around that specialise in those that are really scared. Dentistry has come a long way, it is so quick and efficient these days. I think some dentists even still give happy gas so maybe you could ask about that, it might make it easier for you if you are a bit out of it.

I had some terrible experiences as a child but the dentist is so much better these days. Go as Happy Lady is right, poor oral health can cause other health problems. Tell the dentist you are afraid and I am sure he/she will be very respectful of that.

Hey darl, i too hate dentists, the sound of the drill arhhhh........... sorry im probaby not making it any easier:o , you have giving birth to two beautiful boys Sam and Ethan, so you know you can do anything! Make an appoitment and go there with confidence if he says to you, that you need a filling or a needle to numb the pain, you can say"bring it on, ive given birth twice, so this is nothing" Hopefully this should work! you will be fine, i promise:D

Tee hee, I agree!

So I have just come out the other side of root canal surgery because I too, never went to the dentist.

So the first time I went I cried and made them feel very sorry for me.

The next time I went they were prepared - they gave me valium and lots of numbing cream, and the dental nurse was so lovely - just the kind of midwife I'd like next time lol!

I still hated it, but kept my eyes closed the whole way through and honestly, I can say it DIDN'T HURT AT ALL. Promise.

So get up off that butt girl and GO!

Tracey, my hands have gone sweaty just thinking about it. :( I am petrified too. I have had a hole the size of the grand canyon for 4 years now, and it's getting pretty nasty now.

I had bad dental experiences (how many times could they stuff it up  ) so I just won't go now.

I'd rather give birth too.

Perhaps we should go together.

I even got a script for some valium once so I'd be bombed out, but still couldn't make the appointment. Weak as....

I've been slack too :o

I had a bad experience with a dentist in the past so I really don't want to go back to one even though I know I have to. Plus, i'm a little embarassed by the state of my teeth, so i'm putting it off as long as I can (which is isn't going to be for much longer  )

Tracey

You have to go now!!.

I go to an excellent dentist in Blackburn North - only started to go to him about 4mths ago and now even hubby goes to. He is honest and reasonably priced. Don't know if you have private insurance but it would help cut costs to. PM me if you want further info. :)

would rather give birth than go to the dentist.

Let me birth a quintet naturally, then I'll consider the possibility of maybe one day if I feel like it, to maybe sort of look at my choices of dentists and possibly make an appointment........:o

My mum is terrified of the dentist and because she had a heart operation when she was a child there are all sorts of added risks when she has a filling etc.
One thing she does before she goes is she sees her GP and he writes her a script for "the magic little calming pill" which she takes before she goes!
I drive her because obviously she's too calm to drive and alls well that ends well!
If you're that petrified go and see your GP about getting your own.
You can always ask for the 'happy gas' if they need to do anything...don't let them try and tell you they don't have it - make sure they have it in the surgery when you make the appointment...this really helps to take the edge off too.
Good luck & remember...teeth don't grow back...look after them!:D
