Hi,

My bubs has transitioned to the cot and was just wondering if anyone uses bumpers around the side of the cot? I think SIDS reccomends not to use them, but bubs is quite active and when she wakes up bum shuffles around and I'm waiting for the day she bum shuffles her head into the edge of the cot!

I dont have any bumpers in DS's cot... He is very active in his cot and is always bumping his little head... Doesn't seem to bother him too much and if he hits it harder than usual, he has a little sook and then goes back off to sleep...

I used bumpers with both mine - and they're still here!!!!!!! My cot had metal things in the corners when you lowered them down and I didn't want bubs to hit head on metal bits!!! I put two on cause some don't go whole way around - when they got a bit older, they could knock their head on the sides anyway or fall when trying to stand up - but when new and bit wobbly with head I liked them to be bumping bumper not wood or metal! And if they rolled over in sleep I think it stopped them waking up so often and prevented legs/arms being stuck out sides and hurting themselves when they were small. Hope this helps. Oh yeah, sids does say not to, but they say not to sleep bubs on their tummies too, but mine wouldn't sleep any other way!!!! Oh well - naughty me!

You shouldn't use bumpers, and it is recommended by by SIDS not to.
I suppose you have to weigh it up, a little bump on the head os potential suffocation..??? I know it sounds harsh but you squish something padded up to your face and see how easy it is to breathe! Wouldn't want bub to roll over in sleep and have face palnted in the bumper not being able to breathe.

My daughter was a very active sleeper aswell. She was waking herself up tossing around in her cot so we put her in a portacot and she would just bounce of the sides but wouldn't wake up so she slept soooo much better.

She is now back in her normal cot (from about 17 months old, the portacot mattress was foam and with being hot wanted to try her in the big cot again with a proper mattress) and i found a second hand bumper that wrapped around three sides of the bed. She is OK with this but without the bumper i think that we would be back to square 1.

Hi,

I find Brandon crawls up his cot and bumps his head :(

Poor little thing.. it also can wake him up sometimes cause no doubt it hurts.

I have put a towel at the end of his cot... quiet thickly folded but I tucked it right in to the cot, so its only up about 2 and 1/2 inches which is helping a bit.

Sooooooo, for the past week I have been investigating and found no one recommends cot bumpers till at least 6 months ( if that ) and bub is very mobile.

At present Brandon is waking every second night ( about 4.15 ) with whimpers cause he has crawled up and is hitting his head and so I just re-tuck him in and all is fine.

But !!! I have found you can get mesh cot bumpers and I have just purchased a Breathe Ez Dreamer Cot Bumper from www.babyonabudget.com.au for 24.95 plus 10 postage

Not sure if I'm going try it before 6 months, I have to check out how safe it is when I get it as I would hate to think of the consequences.

Hugs Heids

Thanks Brianasmum as I think the portacot is a fab idea !

Hi,

My sons cot has a bumper that goes around the headboard and the two sides. I find that it keeps him warmer and keeps draughts out. He has also started rolling onto his tummy and doing 360 degree turns in his cot so I bought a little safety pillow (two rolled up pillows held together by a strip of material). The baby lies ontop of the strip of material and the two rolls of cushion are on either side of him. This way, he can lie comfortably on his back or if he tries to roll onto his tummy, he ends up staying on his side which he is loving at the moment. I got it from Big W for around $30.

I have left a reply to a similar question titled 'opinions on cot bumpers' in the product recommendations forum.

It was fairly long and a bit difficult to try and rewrite.

If anyones interested please check it out, its food for thought!

there's been 3 thread about cot bumpers now :p must be the latest thing to talk about.

I just bought some for Cobey as he crawls in his sleep and smashes his head on the cot which wakes him up and distresses him (and me too!) Once the baby can move the sids risk is greatly reduced, so just do them up tight! hehe

I just bought from Babies Galore a product called Airwrap

It's a breathable cot bumper.

I saw on tv a few months ago a story about port-a-cots. There have been several suffocations in the last few years of young bubs (under 6 months) rolling and suffocating in the edge below the mesh inserts in Australia.
