View Full Version : need advice
ok so I am a new mummy... and I am still working out what is normal and not ... so help me please..
my little man gets lots of wind... and often works up a sweat getting it out of his body (that is as delicately as I can word it!!) - it causes him lots of discomfort and his sleep is often broken up because of it...
I just want to ask - today when he was eating (and straining to pass wind) - he got really cold and clammy... and just now when he went to bed he got really cold too... his forehead was especially cold ... I dont want to overdress him... because he is a pretty hot baby normally... and the weather here is still quite warm.. but I am scared he is going to get sick...
I guess what I want to know is - do other babies get like this too??? he really seems to struggle with regulating his temperature - right now I have no fan on ... the window shut and 2 thin blankets on him to try to keep him warm - I'll check on him soon... and he will probably be sweating cause he is too hot!!! gee this is hard to get right!!!
just tell me if it is perfectly normal!!!

Hey veve sorry cant help with the temp problem but you could try a product called Infants Friend for the wind, you get it from the chemist and i cant speak from experience but most of my friends use it and swear by it.
thanks hon :)
we used infants friend for a few weeks ... and it did help ( we used to have several hours of screaming... now he just strains  ) - we weaned him off it slowly... his wind is much better than it used to be...
but thanks muchly for the tip :)

Hi Veve,
Not sure with the wind - I used to hang Ry over my arm (on his tummy) and rub his little back which used to help him.
Is his actual temp regulating or just his 'feel' ?
K
good point rynosmum...
well I took his temp today - and it was 36.6ish - I thought that babies were meant to be warmer??? I really have to buy a decent thermometer (sp?) - the one I have goes under his arm ... I have to buy one of those ear ones..
I didn't take it tonight when he was clammy - must do that more often...

My experience was that my babies both sweated a lot (even in CAnberra and the middle of winter) and the nurses kept telling me that it took ages for babies to get the hang of self-regulating their temperature. So sweating and cooling themselves down too much is normal - having said that, keep an eye on him and if you are worried at all don't feel silly asking your GP or CHn (if you have a good one).

That is the right temp for babies - my girls are always 36.5 when they are well with the under arm thermometer. And don't buy an ear one - there was a thread a while ago - none of us had any success with it and the overwhelming consensus was the $13 Safety First digital was the way to go.

We've got the ear thermometer (aural something something...):D
The only thing with them is they are so quick and easy to use, I used to take his temp all the time - just another thing to be obsessed with LOL.
Ry has generally always been around the 36.5 mark - so no probs there. I start to stress if he gets near to 38 and during one particularly bad ear infection, he shot to over 40 about 3 times in one week.
Keep an eye on it and never hesitate to see a Dr if you're concerned, I've done it many a time !:D

Waddaya mean !?!? I have the ear one and it's great !! Very accurate and I even compared it with the GP's when I was concerned once. What thread ? Who said that ? Why I oughta.....;)
gee I love bubhub :)
I FINALLY got through to my mum - (how DARE she have a social life!) who had a valid point that he only had his needles a few days ago- he could still be coping with those (6 vacinations :( ) ..
thanks guys - I'll stick with my thermometer then (I seriously dont need anything else to obsess over!!!) - and just keep an eye on my sweaty little man - nice to know that his temp is normal ... I"ll try to stop hovering over him...

Oops! I have one and it never gives an accurate temp! If I had the time to look I would find the thread - there were heaps of us who had given the ear ones up as a bad (and expensive) joke. Which brand did you get?
Veve - glad you got to talk to your mum - mine is always very sensible and helpful too! Don't you love them?!
found it ... the thread is (creatively :D ) called EAR THERMOMETER - and was started by BJelly...
I'm reading it now...

All sounds pretty normal to me !
My bubs is a major sweater i blame his daddy for that one they both sweat as like to say "like pigs" :p
Just make sure he has appropriate clothing on & keep an eye on him like draught said im sure all will be fine. We all stress hehehehe.
Oh & yes this could be him still reacting to his vax but ummm can i be totally of track & ask what were the 6 (?) as that seems like a hell of a lot in one go.
yeah he had three needles... hep B ... IVP ( I think ... it was an acronym with three letters... I think that is the one!! it is the needle that most kids react to if they are going to have a reaction. ) ... and a third needle which had 4 in it... polio... tetenus.. - smallpox??? maybe
the dr told me ... I honestly cant remember... (naughty mummy!!! )
please correct me if any of that is wrong people!!!
poor sod had two needles in one leg.. and one in the other... lucky he is tough :)

Hiya Guys,
My bubs has really bad wind pains...he'll be 4 months on Thursday and he still has issues with it- broken sleep, wont eat if in pain, grunting and groaning, etc.
Someone suggested we see a natropath for some help. Making an appointment tomorrow.
I've found that sitting on one of those big exercise balls....with my son between my legs...and me holding his legs bent, pulled up to his chest....and then bouncing slowly and gently...he gets the farts out. He seems to relax. I always do it before a feed.
We are also still giving him infacol....just changed to infants friend.
Our 4 month needles are coming up soon too....not looking forward to those!!
Mrs Little & Son.
oooh have to get me one of those balls.... should really use it for exercising too I suppose :D
thanks for the tip!

I only just realised i forgot to tell you about using something like an exercise ball in my last post ! DOH ! Dont mind me mushy brain !
Another thing is to use your lap for tummy time after a feed this helps with wind as the pressure helps relieve their little tums ! Oh & i used to find a bath helped also because it would calm my bubs enough so he would relax & let the wind go heh.
Ok now i get ya with the vax ! The way you said it i thought you had 6 separate needle & im thinking WTH ?!?!?!?!? hehehe ok yeah so he had the 3 needles ok just watch the wound site as this may get warm due to it reacting with bubs if so just use a cold facewasher to help relieve it. When you got it done you shouldve been told which leg this usually happens with ( shouldve been the one where only the single was done as this is usually the one that children have a reaction to ) that way your more easily able to keep an eye on it & watch for any probs. It sounds like he is doing fine though but if your still worried tomorrow another trip to the doctors to put your mind at ease wont hurt :D
