Fused placenta???

A friend of mine from my mothers' group has twins which she just found out, through DNA testing, that they aren't identical.
However her mother, who is a nurse, swore there was only one placenta :confused:
Could they have come from one placenta? Or did the placentas fuse?

What was yours like? :detective:

I had a fused placenta at birth and have frat boys.
The middie that delivered showed me and explained and told me how they tell the difference if it's fused. She said that if there is four membranes then they are frat and if there are 3 then they will be ID.

I kind of wished I had of remembered to ask about the placenta status. The drs and nurses never made mention during the pregnancy or after the delivery whether or not ours were fraternal or identical twins. Seems its not of real interest. I know mine aren't just by looking at them. Maybe they figured that too.
There's so much scepticism about the placenta status i think it confuses the medical world too.
Its so easy for two placentas to fuse together in a twin pregnancy though and appear as one on the scan. That's what I got told.

We're taking part in a study for the Adelaide Uni which I think eventually will reveal the status of the DNA. Like I said, I know already!

I had no idea a placenta could get fused!
Apparently my friends placenta (s) was massive. Also one twin was 3.88 kg and the other one was 3.6 :eek: (My DS alone was 3.88) :wave:

my bubs' placenta were seperate in the early scan but came out as one great big one... the dr's and nurses were fasinated!
Aishnn's cord was slightly shorter, she only just made it up onto my chest, lucas had it wrapped around his neck once.
Aishnn was 2.6kg and Lucas was 3.1kg, he was always slightly bigger in scans so i don't think he was getting more goodness once it fused ???
