What's the deal with pain killers? When someone is addicted to painkillers how does it make them feel? Anyone know?
Just wondering is all.

I know a few of you out there have been/are addicted to painkillers.......can anyone explain it all to me please...?

I think it depends what sort of pain killer it is. I had an addiction to Mersyndol which has a muscle relaxant in it. Usually people have addictions to that sort of pain killer rather than panadol.

Ummm as Chelle said it depends on the type of painkiller.....

I think mostly their body just becomes dependant on them, they dont get a special feeling.....

The stronger painkillers can give off a high type feeling....and they just feel out of it....

I have had a friend who was addicted (prob still is), but she would drink too to get a "better" effect.....

My dads addicted to panadeine forte he cannot get through a day without them and he sais he cannot focus or concentrate unless he takes them even after his had his back fixed and the pains not there he said psychologically he needs them. He feels alive when his on them and he can manage day to day tasks

I was addicted to xanax for my nerves and pain etc for about 6 months i know its not a long time but its enough and not that they are pain killers but they did the same thing made me forget about my pain etc as they put me in like a tranced state

No not relaxed as such. It's a different sort of high to things like speed, but it is still a high. You get cloudy, floaty and are on the verge of passing out. Your body feels heavy and as Suby said you feel out of it.

Thankyou for sharing.

That is what it is like at first. But the more often you have them, the less affect they have, so yes you can carry on your normal life. At the height of my addiction, I would take up to 10 night mersyndol at a time and barely have any effects.

Codine is highly addictive. And it gives you an awful "hangover" and headaches when you are coming off it.

Codiene is actually as addictive as Heroin, but more readily available, so scarily that is a pretty unreal comparison...... Alot of Heroin addicts start off by popping painkillers and doing other small time drugs like pot, etc.....

I love Codiene, it is one painkiller that actually works for me, normal panadol etc, does nothing but make me sick......but I have to agree with Chelle about coming down......

As most of you will know, most days I am in a lot of pain. So I have been taking pains killers for over a year now... daily.
It has not taken over my life and I know I can go a day or 2 without any and have done so before.
But as someone said, once your body gets used to one dose, you need to up it. If I can't get my hands on any strong pain killers and all I have is panadol, I will take 4 at a time to get some relief. And it wears off quickly so I may take another 4 in 2-3 hours.

I know that I am not 'addicted' as such, but I DO suffer alot of pain. Once the pain is gone and I am 'fixed' I won't need to take them. I know I can just stop taking them, I only need them for the pain.

I understand completely Lunar, there's definitely a difference between a painkiller addiction and a need for painkillers. The addiction would be if your pain stopped but you still took the medication which you obviously understand.

I was constatly on panadol for bad glandular fever a few years ago which lasted a year. After the first 4 months of taking 2 panadol every 4 hours they stopped workign because my body were used to them and that's when it can get dangerous when your body is immune and you continue by taking stronger medication more frequently.

I too, used to wonder why people got addicted to painkillers. Then, one day I ended up in hospital in agony with a burst cyst on my left ovary and I was prescribed Capadex. Well, 2 of those and I was euphoric  Now I can clearly see why people like the feeling from them. It really scared me a bit so I stopped taking them as soon as I could................as they were pretty good ;)

Same Chelle.. the "High" does not last very long.. soon enough like any addiction, you take them just to feel normal, rather than any other effect.. No different to alcohol.. I found my best friend and worst enemy in Valium for a while.. I would have said I was normal on them, but my DH said no way.. I was a different person.. even though I could still go to work and drive and live "my" normal life, apparently those who knew me could see a marked difference.. I found it (like alcohol) helped me to numb what I was feeling..

In the past I've had cluster headaches, and taken Mersyndol for them. I don't take Mersyndol any more, as I have children and it'd make me too drowsy, plus, i think they are highly addictive.

However, the feeling of being on Mersyndol....you feel like there isn't a care in the world. Or if there is, it doesn't matter. You feel like you're about to pass out, yes, and you don't care, you sleep for ages, wake up, and pass back out again, and do it over and over again. Sounds terrible when I write it, but it was a lovely floaty/heavy (hard to explain) feeling, a real stoned feeling. The bad part was when you wanted to feel normal again, and it'd take me a good full day to not feel completely lathargic and cloudy. One should NEVER drive after taking Mersyndol. I was never addicted to them, but had to take them at times for the headaches, and I can see how one could easily become addicted.
