Just wondering if there is a "cut off date" for when SIDS is no longer a risk in babies/children??

They were interviewing someone on 9am the other day and she said 12 months, basically when they are strong and starting to stand.

I actually asked someone this from Sids & Kids last year at the expo and she told me that the oldest SIDS death in a child recorded is 4:eek:

 Wow! I was going to say when its old/strong enough to lift itself up... I didn't realize the risk lingered so long... scarey. I cant imagine the level of distress and despair one would experience. Losing a child must be one of the hardest things in the world :crying:

My cousin passed away of SIDS at 22 months.

This has always been the main reason why I co-sleep.

I am a very light sleeper and constantly check on them.

A lady I used to work with, her first grandson dies from SIDS at 22 months. :crying:

His mum put him down for a day nap. Makes me upset just thinking about it.

i think this is quite a hard one to answer, really "SIDS" is a risk to all little ones, as someone said, it can happen at 4.
but it is sudden infant death syndrome, so SIDS really is just a term some will use for a baby (infant).

there is another name for when people of older ages pass in their sleep for what apears no real reason, but i cant for the life of me remember it

a very close family friend lost their little girl at 22months, this happend years ago, i had not even been born. i see her parents alot and you can still see how much it effects them. you can see it when they hold my DD.

I think that after this it's known as Sudden Arrhythmia Death Syndrome, or SADS (Sudden Adult Death Syndrome).

It happens to older children, teens and adults too :( Less often though, but how sad and tragic it must be too the family that loses someone when they had so signs of illness or complications... they just don't wake up in the morning :crying: Sorry, it's a bit morbid isn't it.

My sister had a friend who died a few months ago. She just didn't wake up one morning and I don't think they really found a cause of death.
I read about SADS recently, coincidentally not long after my sister's friend died. It is thought that there could be a link between SIDS and SADS, but they don't really know enough about either condition.
I find the whole thought of someone just dying suddenly, being explained or unexplained, almost terrifying.
