View Full Version : Calcium in the heart
I have just been to the OB after my 18 week scan and they found a calcium "deposit" in the heart and they said that it is more common in down syndrom babies. I had a nuchal translucency test which said that the risk was low and I shouldn't worry, but it is hard not too. Has anyone else had this diagnosis?
Yep - it was picked up at my 18 week scan as well. It is more common in Down syndrome babies, but my Dr told me it isn't anything to worry about if that is the only marker. I had a scan at 36 weeks (for other reasons) and it was gone :D. Good luck with it all!
ETA - My Nt scan was low risk too

Tasmum i have not heard of this but i am sure you are worried , hope someone can help with their story oe experiance :hugs:
Sorry, just a q - i think mine was called a Echogenic intracardiac focus - is this what you were told?
My oldest dd had this too and she didn't end up with DS or any other sort of medical problems and she is five now. Usually other markers are present too if a baby has DS. Echogenic cardiac foci is the weakest of all the ds markers and a very common finding. My sonographer told me that she finds at least 10 a week!
If you need anymore information, I can find some links for you just pm me:)
To be honest I don't know what it was called I started to tune out after she mentioned DS and the heart. I wish I had listened, but I think I was in shock. Thank you for your help, I guess that I just keep my finger crossed tightly!
The only way to be sure if your baby does or does not have DS, is to have an amnio but there is still a degree of risk with that. I chose not to have an amnio but at 28 weeks, a more detailed ultrasound was undertaken where they can look for other signs of DS particularly in relation to the stomach. This ultrasound was all fine.
