View Full Version : Gas or Wind?

Hi,

I am hoping that someone out there is experienceing something similar and might be able to shed some light.

Ollie is now 4 mths old and has had what I like to call 'poo issues' since birth. I have no idea whether you technically call this gas or wind but basically, he experiences pain and is uncomfortable in his gut - really pushes hard to try and pass a motion (but they are not hard but generally runny).

When he was a really little baby he used to have green frothy poo (sometimes this happens now) and I had excess milk supply so I would feed him off the same breast to ensure that he received not just the lactose rich front part of the milk but also the fatty part of the back part of the milk( I understand that the lactose can react with bub's immature gut and cause all the gas and pain). I have stopped doing this about 2 months ago as he seemed to be effectively draining the breast.

This used to be mostly a problem during the day but lately it has started to wake him up at night - he starts to cry and is very uncomfortable. I go and BF and then put him on the change table (incidentally he will generally only do poo once he is on the change table and his nappy is off). Here comes the fun bit - then I have to wait for up to 20 mins for him to actually go - he is pushing for pretty much the whole time. If I get impatient and rewrap and settle him the pain will wake him up again in around 1.5 to 2 hours.

He has always been very good at burping after each feed so don't think it can be that. I have gone off dairy (to try and reduce the lactose) and caffine but am struggling to know where to go next. We have started infacol drops yesterday in desperation ( I am skeptical) but there has been no change - will persist for a week.

Sorry for the long winded (ha ha) story but any suggestions or people with bub's experiencing the same thing would be greatly appreciated

Hi, I haven't experienced this, though my 2 week old son does seem to have a bit of wind and finds it very uncomfortable and gets colicky.

Sounds to me like your bub has got chronic constipation which could be related to food allergies or intolerances or sensitive stomach.

I wouldn't hesitate to see a doctor about it and see if they can recommend a mild laxative or stool softener. If you can nail the constipation, this will often help alleviate the wind as well.

Good luck!

Also you could try giving him some water - this can help little babies clean their bowels out.
