well we finally got our puppy(mini dachshound) last week and ive been asked by friends and family if ill breed him...

keeping mind that hes only 9-10weeks old and it wont be for a while, but when are they able to start to mate ?? what age??are there specific trates i should see before even starting to think about him mating??

i have been told that a male can mate with his mother(to keep the blood lines true) but can he mate with his sister or along the track, his daughter???

any help would be great as i know VERY LITTLE in this area. thanks

I would only breed my dog if I was a registered breeder, with a pedigreed dog.. and ONLY if I had 8 definite homes, before the mating commenced.

Breeding dogs is very expensive, it can also be a long, tough, heartbreaking road.

hey ya, look only u can make the discesion on whether u want to breed ur dog, but as far as i no for a female you shouldnt mate them before the 2nd season as they arnt fully matured.. And males i think once they are matured which every dog is diff but some are bout 12 months others younger others older.. Im not 100% bout that but hopefully that does help a lil but until u find out for sure or whether u decide to breed or not....

You should not be breeding a dog with his mother or his sister, this is were breeds start having genetic problems, should wait until he is at least 12 months of age and you have the male so you will get the pick of the litter unless you also have the female as well of course. If you have a male it is not too expensive but if you have th efemale and have to feed and vaccinate the pups can become wuite expensive.

yes agree with the others. I use to breed Beagles.

Contact the Canine control Council (CCC) in our state and get a name of a breeder and maybe work with them or the person you brought your puppy through.

I would not be breeding if i didn't have CCC registration papers.

Hope this has been helpful. Please wait till your male is at least 12 months and Females should wait until there have had at least 2 cycles.

Saying that it can be done but only by very experienced breeders, those who know their dogs and their lines really well. Some of the best dogs have come from line and in breeding. Im not at all reccomending that you do it just saying that is not weird for thinking it. :)
