Help!!!!!!!!!!!!!

DS is 15 weeks old tomorrow and I am not sure if he is constipated .

This is the story.

DS is b/f all feeds but one as he has a formula feed once a day as I am returning to work next week, and wanted to get a store of b/f in the frezzer for mum when she looks after him. I have been doing this for nearly two weeks, and once I return to work DS will go back to being exculsively b/f with formula only when mum runs out.

Anyway I am getting a bit off track. He also has one solid feed a day about, 5 teaspoons of vegies. Thats the background info.

What has been happeing is he hasn't done a BM since Tuesday and seems to be getting a lot of pains (as in screaming which is very unusual for him). He is also pulling his legs up lot. Does this mean he is constipated??????? If so what can I do to help him??????

Any advice would be great.

Thanks

Belinda

If he hasn't poo'd since then I'd say he probably is. You can try giving him a little prune juice, nice and natural.
Pulling his legs up may also be a sign of wind. Some formula doesn't agree with all babies, it took as a few to get it right, as we bottle fed from day one with both...
The veggies should help to keep him regular,

How do I tell if he doesn't like the formula  . We are using Nan Gold. It was the first one we tried and he seems to take it okay. They last day or so he has started playing a bit with the bottle, but he occasionally does this with the boob too. Does this mean I should try a differnt brand  .

This is soooooooooooooo confusing, i feel I am chasing my tail.

Please HELP

We found with Nath, especially, that he would get terrible wind with the first 3 formulas we tried, he would scream and pull his legs up till we managed to get him to burp. Then we found Infants Friend, we still had to change formula (we went to goat though, so probably a bit extreme for you needs).
I would get either some Infants Friend or Grip Water... both are also s'posed to help keep them regular aswell. I would try that first then if you notice him still pulling his legs up after he has formula I would probably think about changing it.
Does this sound disjointed... sorry I'm a bit tired today:o

If it was me, I'd cut out the solid feed all together. He doesn't really need it and it might be making the problem worse. Even though vegies are all fibre they are still solids which can constipate them if less fluid is taken in. If that makes any sense. When we started giving two solid meals a day (both vegies) O got very badly constipated because he couldn't handle it.
I would try and bf as much as possible. Because it has been hot a lot of the fluid would be sweated out too.
I would take him along to the dr to get it sorted, otherwise it can get a lot worse.
Good luck and I hope he feels better soon!:)

I completely agree. Give him as much fluids as possible - it will help with hydration which will in turn help with the BM. BM do change with both formula and solid feeds - when he does go, you will know instantly if it was constipation (very very hard little pebbles) or his digestive system adjusting. Sounds like he definitely has tummy pain though so off to the Dr...

He is still having the same number of feeds as before we started him on solids, and he always has breast before vegies. He has also been on solids for over two weeks, so could it still be the vegies?????? I assumed that if they were going to upset him it would have done so by now:confused:

Could do but I know with O it took a while. It might not be the vegies but I would cut them out anyway because strictly speaking he doesn't have to have them and it might help. You can only give it a go. ;)

HE HAS DONE A POO :D

I never thought I would get excited about my son going to the toilet. I don't mean to be disgusting but it was a medium size one and it was quite thick. Maybe this is why he was having soooo much trouble. I am going to stop giving him vegies and see if this helps. Instead I am going to comp feed him, and see if that helps in the afternoons.

Thanks again

Hi there,

I would probably say the vegies are giving him the issues - especially if you have given the formula around the same time as well.

My boy was born on the 2/10 - but I don't think he is ready for solids. And I think 5 tps at one meal for a 3.5 month old is probably a little too much while still having the same amount of milk.

I have heard if you want to start on solids, I would probaby start later on, but start with rice ceral - its a bit more gentle on the stomach. Sometimes, fruits & vegies are a little too strong for their stomachs consumed a little too early.

If you continue to breastfeed then go and have a juice boost drink called Raspberry and apple crush, within a day no more constipation!
