Hi, Just wondering if there are any other Rockhampton mums with partners working in the central qld mines? We have been here for 5 months so are relatively new to the mining life. I'm coping ok, does get tough at times but all we seem to be told is that our relationship will either get stonger or it will fail due to the distance and time away from home + trust. How long have you been in the mines and how have you coped?

hey ya id love to say i knew but im going to be new to this as well and would be asking the same question in a couple of weeks as my DH just got a job at the mines up at skarden river..... By the way i am in Townsville.... He is leaving in 2 weeks to start.... I would imagine the lifestyle is different is it????
Hey girls  I am in Mackay and my hubby works away in the mines.
He has worked out there for about a year now,he started when our DD was 4 or 5 weeks old. It has DEFINITELY taken some adjustment on both of our parts, but it the long run it has made us stronger.
It took a lot of time though to get used to it. We coped by making time for 3 things when he is home. Time for family, time for the 2 of us, and time for him to be by himself. The things that he can't do out at work so much- like go get stuff for the cars, or time on the computer, whatever.
We have our moments LOL. I am stronger as a person because I have to cope by myself with a baby/toddler without a break for a minute, and sometimes I lose a lot of patience :o
He is finding it harder though as Rhianna gets bigger, because she knows him and misses him so much now.
It is worth it for us, and will be better when he is on a better roster...
What roster are your hubby's on?

My partner is at the Poitrel mine which is about 20 mins south east of moranbah - 1.5 hours west of Mackay and 4 hours north west from here - Rockhampton. He is on a 4 on 4 off roster which is great. He is home for at least 3 days. I think we probably get more time together now then we would have before he changed jobs. Plus i probably would have had to go back to full time work, whereas now I don't have to work at all but have chosen to do 15hrs/week.
I agree that the time away has made us stronger. I actually enjoy the time apart.....except at night time. I don't like having the bed to myself.
I had numerous fights - generally because I am jealous and lonely and have no friends, whereas he is in a camp and has friends/colleagues around him to talk to. I used to get ****ty if he didn't call on time etc. In a way I am still jealous, because I'm away from home and am yet to get out and meet new people and he already has mates to talk to, go to the pub with...... I guess my turn will come.
