Hi,

I am pretty keen on becoming a midwife... Can anyone tell me how I go about getting into a course - I live in Brisbane. Have tried searching on the net but havent had much luck...

Any info is much appreciated!

You will probably have to do nursing first then midwifery post grad. I think only SA and NSW have direct entry midwifery programs (may be wrong but I know NSW has only just started their first).

Good luck!

UQ at Ipswich has Direct Entry Midwifery Course...started this year

Otherwise you can do a 3 year nursing course and then a postgrad mid course.

The second way is how I did it - purely because there were no direct entry courses around when I did it. If you definantly know you want to be a midwife don't muck around doing nursing first. Although having said that I like the fact that I can switch between nursing and mid whenever I choose to (not that I have since doing mid but if I wanted to I could).

Nursing courses are at ACU, QUT and Griffith....Post grad mid can be done just about anywhere and externally.

Hope that helps...anymore questions just ask....we have a lot of direct entry and post grad students where I work and so know a bit about the course as I am often buddied with them for a day here and there..... oh the joys

yes the only direct entry in brisbane. You have to go there 1 day a week, 3 days to the hospital RBWH and 1 days self directed learning

Yeah only at Ipswich. Did you get an OP? From the research I have done their OP cut off this year (the first year) was 2 (nearly a Dr!) and they only took 20 students. ACU were supposed to start direct entry this year, but they didn't get approval, I think that they may be starting next year?!

QUT next year are starting a double degree B.nursing/B. Midwifery that is 4 years, I dont know what their OP/ranking will be though.

I think the best bet is get into your nursing (if you can get into UQ do it there) also ACU is at Banyo and also if you are third year nursing student you actually get paid for your prac, which there is a lot of. I am not sure about Griffith.. I think maybe they do as well. QUT you don't. I go to QUT at Kelvin Grove, but go to the Carseldine campus and catch a free shuttle bus into KG.

If you are travelling from Northside Brisbane, to get to UQ you can catch the train, it is just over an hour trip with express, it will give you some good study/reading time, and it is only for one day a week.....but they are the BEST for their nursing program.

Also, to do it postgrad, you can actually earn while you learn!! You get paid as you are an RN, they will let you work in maternity while you are studying. I don't know if that is new TBO, but that is what I was told at the nursing expo.

Hi,
Just wondering - what if you don't have an OP do you know if there is any exceptions or do you have to study year 12.

Thanks

If you didn't finish high school (or get a selection ranking) you will probably have to sit for a STAT test. They are run thru QTAC - look up their website or call them.

I sat for an OP.... but... The school actually asked me NOT to sit for it as I would bring their average down (they did this for alot of students who had failed at least one subject... I only failed history!! but the whole class failed as we had about 15 different teachers through out the year)...
Anyways, I sat for my OP but never received it... why? because they didnt put my test in! Everyone who they asked not to do it, but did... they didnt put their tests in.

So, I never got my OP.

What happens then?
