Dont' get me wrong - I love my mothers group - they are a great bunch of ladies and terrific bubs....but lately I come away feeling like I am not doing enough to aid my bubs development.

They are all about to turn 1 year old and my DS is the only bub not walking ( still commando slides) and apart from the word dad ( said very indescrimately) seems to be a bit behind the others.

Paeidatrician says DS is "normal" on the scale of developement...... so I am not worried at all - but at the same time it does make me wonder.............should I be reading to him more- playing with him more -doing something to help him crawl??

That and the myriad of toys some of these kids have is amazing - my DS seems positively deprived in comparision- the peg basket and our tupperware cupboard have been great toys for weeks - perhaps I should splurge or some Fisher price numbers???

Ok - sorry I rambled......... think I just had to put my thoughts out there :)

All kiddies are different and I think if your doc isn't concerned than I wouldn't be either.
My boys both crawled at 7 months and 6.5 months. My older son walked at 10 months and while my younger son hasn't yet walked very far on his own, he's getting there, at nearly 10 months.
If you want to get him up on his feet try getting him in a pool. That's how we taught both our boys to get their balance and take their first steps.

To be honest, I would have liked them to be a bit older before they started walking, then they were into every thing lol!

Lucy - don't think for one second that any of those women are responsible for their babies getting up and miraculously walking. They also had nothing to do with their babies crawling, sitting, teething or talking!!!

Your darling bub will get up and walk exactly when he feels like it and not a moment before!

Do you think those incredibly expensive toys were around when you were a kid? You're not still shuffling around on your bottom now are you?

He's very normal. My daughter wasn't walking at 1 either ... and my son was walking at 10 months. They had the same toys ... and the same encouragement.

Fear not, all is well in your world and he'll be running around the house getting into everything that the shouldn't before you know it. If any of the mothers group should poo poo his perceived lack of development, just smile to yourself and feel safe in the knowledge that you currently know where he is ... ALL THE TIME!

ditto to what debs said :)
nothing these mums did or didnt do have had any impact on when their babies crawled/walked/talked, babies do this whenever they are ready!!
All my kids were sooo different. Thomas crawled at 6 mths, and walked on his own at about 13 mths. Cooper was off and running completely unaided just on 10mths, and our darling Matilda didnt crawl till about 10mths and at 13mths is walking along the furniture, but has not attempted to walk unaided.
None of this has had anything to do with what toys they had, how much i read to them etc, as ive pretty much done the same things with all of them, and they are all of fairly equal intelligence, they are bright, healthy children. So try to relax, and enjoy this period of him not being able to get around as well, ;) once he takes off you'll wonder why you were so eager for him to do it!! lol :)

Like the others said...relax and try not to worry - he sound's just fine!

It's hard not to compare bubs in a mother's group situation, I think it's just a natural thing us mums do. I used to come home and tell DP of all the stages each bub was up to! Crazy, I know! hehehe

When my DD was approaching 1....there were only 2 out of the 7 bubs that were walking!

He doesn't need countless toys or reading lessons....just enjoy him. :)

Hear Hear Supermum & Coops....:D

Your bub is FINE.. there is nothing you should be doing...just like Coops says when they are walking you wish they weren't my DD #1 didn't walk til 14.5mths..yep the last to do it in our mother's group - while they all ran around after their bubs & their coffee's got cold i was quite happy sipping away at mine LOL:p . Having FP toys wont make any difference either, each baby is unique they all do things at different stages.. to be honest DD#1 seemed to have better fine motor skills than most other bubs (she could hold a pencil properly a lot earlier than others in our MG) than Gross motor skills where as DD#2 walked by 12.5mths & her fine motor skills aren't 1/2 as good as DD#1 at the same time but they are all different...there is no need to worry:D

Dont fear. Crawling is a very important developmental stage as it helps develop both the left and right side of the brain. I child can only walk when they have a certain height ratio. You child might still be top heavy and wont walk until this balances out. The normal range for walking is 9 months to 18 months.

Dont panic he is very normal. Enjoy this stage, soon he will be running.

Oooo when little dude was about 6 weeks old I panicked because I hadn't bought him any toys. AND he only had ONE stuffed bear!

So I went out and spent tons of money on a whole bunch of really schmick stuff...

To date his fave toy is the plastic water bottle I drink from when I'm feeding him
