Hi Mummies from Singapore,
requested the Mods of this Forum to set up this section for SgMoms :) Thot it might be a great platform for us to interact with moms Down Under and also, to support one another... since we are miles from home ...
So who's where?
I'll start the ball rolling... I'll be moving to Perth this Friday with my boys to join my husband :)
Cheers!

Did you rent a place or buy one?
achander
30-05-2007, 21:55

Hi Ladies
Mngo is right ... I've been out of touch 'coz my network was not set up... in fact, this is not my permanent one. We bought a prepaid internet 'coz we couldn't wait any longer. Imagine my horror when I logged in to find 500+ emails!!!
Anyway, it's like finally coming home again... we've missed Perth so much. So far it's been good. It'll be even better when I sort out my driver's licence :D
Bertram is a quite a distance from the city, so we've been rather reliant on my husband. But we love this place! The house is lovely, and we are just across from the kindy and primary school. A walk round the corner brings us to the daycare. However... after looking at the cost of childcare here, I'm considering being a stayhome mom! I've to call Centrelink and Family Assist to see how much rebate we can get... otherwise, childcare is really out of the question! Or... hmm... I may try to get my boys' previous childcare to set up one here! HAHAHAH
So far, the weather has been quite good... though it's only autumn, some nights (and days) have been really really cold (like tonite!) Yesterday was the only day I managed to go out wearing shorts and a T-shirt.
My boys love the place here too... the older one doesn't want to go back ... and the younger one doesn't know better! hahaha... however, my younger one has fallen sick. Bad case of the sniffles, coupled with REALLY BAD teething. He had fever on the third day, with bad running nose, cough and lotsa phlegm. Thankfully he's recovering now. My older one on the other hand, seems to be immune to cold weather. He runs around in a t-shirt and fleece pants. Doesn't want to wear socks or a jacket, and kicks off the covers at night. He loves the weather here.
Also we managed to get out Medicare sorted out already, coz we tagged on to my husband's. Brought the younger boy to the doctor on Thursday, and didn't have to pay. Of course, the doctor didn't prescribe anything too  We went to the chemist next door and told them to recommend some meds to treat the symptoms. Easier still, we called my sis in Sydney -- she's a Pharmacist too. Told her to help us stock up on Paed meds when she visits in July :)
Okie... sorry for the L O N G report... now that the network is up... will be in touch more regularly. Keep in touch k?
Cheers!

Hi Achander
Good to hear from you. Sounds like u are enjoying urself and settling in well.
Is childcare subsidised? I always tot it was..
r u planning on getting a job?
do keep in touch
achander
12-06-2007, 23:10
Hi Sunnygirl :)
Dropped in at the child care some time last week. I gathered that whoever is interested in using approved/registered child care facility, will need to call Centrelink on how much subsidy/rebate they are able to get. Will call them tomorrow and update you all :)
At the moment, I am in no real hurry to get a job. will be happy to be a SAHM :) but it is really challenging with two boys! hahah
What's urgent for me now is to get my driver's license sorted out, and hopefully get a small car :)
Hope to hear from you all soon ... will certainly stay in touch.
Hello mummies,

hi sunnygirl,

how's the going?

Hi Mngo,
Basically when I brought my son to the doc, I told him the symptoms and what I'd done to help relieve them (eg. what meds were given and stuff). Then the doc confirms what he has, and what might be the cause... and told me that what I'd been doing was right, and that I should just continue with it :)
What I'd learnt, and from past experience too, is that you can just go to the chemist and tell the chemist the problem, and they will recommend appropriate meds ... don't need to see the doc at all! I suppose the doc will only prescribe antibiotics if necessary, and these need a prescription.
My mom went to the doc recently too... and coz she's not a PR, the doc was quite nice. Told her that if she still wasn't well in a couple of days, and if she went back to see the doc, she would have to pay again... so she gave her a prescription for standby. Incidentally, consultation here is about $40. ;)
in this case - then the doc must be really "wu eng " i dunno if i can adapt to such practice or not.
sometimes kids cough .. and need anti biotics. but if we just go chemist, we cant get the antibiotics from chemist.

mngo,
they dont really like to prescribe antibiotics coz they believe the natural healing way. unless it's really serious or got infection.

hey vtoh
change to linear mode...it is easier to view
mngo,
i agree lor, better not to keep eating antibiotics..coz it can make the body immune so next time if got serious sickness, need more powerful antibiotics to cure rather than normal ones.
thanks sunnygirl,
linear is so much better !!!!
Hi Mummies,
Finally registered myself today..
Will be flying off to Perth in a few hours time... hving separation anxiety now...
Anyway, I will be staying in Cannington. Anyone staying near me? I know nuts about the areas there.

hi i agree tat too much antibio is not good.
maybe i am not used to seeing a doctor. and getting medicine from a chemist - rather than getting it from doctor himself. eg: paracetamol or cough mixture.

Hi there
Im from the neighbourhood - Malaysia, does it count? :hugs:
DH & DS were 'made in' HOng Kong and we are currently planning to move to Melbourne soon - is there anyone could give us some helping hands here?
We are home-hunting and would greatly appreciate mums living in Melbourne or surrounding areas to share their words of wisdom as to whether this area is good living for families.
I wonder if there is anyone out there could share some thoughts about housing and maybe even, can tell me any of the best complex/housing estates to live in.
Also are there many asian chinese around?
(worried I would become a recluse)
Thanks so much and looking forward to meet some of you after our move!

Hi hi
Some of us here have been to melbourne. I told the mommies here i like Point cook. the place is new. lots of new residence, house. and many asia family. It's serene, and not so catastrophic.
In the east Melbourne, there are lots of asian but houses are costly. tat's the mount waverly, glen waverly, toorak area. Point cook is west.
there are lots of vietnamese. If u want asian stuffs, u can get them from Boxhill. A place for Asians.

No kids yet, I work at Curtin Uni. Lynwood is down Nicholson Rd, on the opposite side of Albany Hwy. There's some pretty decent asian food in the area, especially Spencer Village (down Spencer Rd).
How do you find Perth so far? Settling in okay?

Hi Maiko,
18 years is a long time :) Were you studying here then?
I've just moved over with my boys, though my husband's been here for more than a year already. The boys seem to love it, and we are settling in :)

i used to study in curtin.
i've got a fren working in curtin too. she's in the finance.
Mngo: Yeah I studied there too :D I think there are quite a few who come to Perth for uni then later decide to migrate over.
Achander: Yes, I came to Perth in time to start Yr 4 (9 years old). What suburb do you live in?

wow u are so young... and u hv migrated for so many years.
are you an AUSSIE citizen now?
Do you speak their accent now?

Do you speak their accent now?
I've always had Aust citizenship as my father had it - (he's not from Sg). As for my accent... I just asked a friend and he said "no, not by a long shot" however I don't exactly speak "singlish" either. No idea really, some sort of hybrid?
Positions at Curtin are advertised at http://jobs.curtin.edu.au/. You can also just hand in your resume at Staff Services. This goes into a central pool which they might hire from if they need to fill positions quickly on a contract basis.

Perth is a nice place. While Singapore is nice as well, I really love the working hours here. My hb will be home latest by 6pm. If he's still in Singapore, he hasn't even knock off.
I'm trying to go out on my own and exploding the area more often. Right now, I only know how to walk to Carousel or take the train to Perth city.
Is there any place interesting (reachable by train) where you can suggest? :)
I'm not very adventurous and it's been a long time since I've taken the train, but a few that come to mind are Subiaco, Fremantle and Leederville.
PM me if anyone wants to meet up sometime. :)
hi mummies, jojos here
me moving to sydney in Jan08 with my families, any mummies moving to sydney?
Hi,
Finally registered and join this forum, just like some of you, used to be from the other forum.
Got to admit that I am not regular in communicating in forums, though a SAHM at the moment, can never find enough time for myself.
We've yet to move to AU, prob sometime middle of next year, latest by end of next year. Decided to give birth to my 2nd one here this Dec, wait till she's abt 6mths before we move. Also, thought of letting my elder daughter, who is 5 yrs old now, to complete her Kindergarten here first. At the same time, need to save $$$ before we move over.
We r still deciding betw Perth (where I'm very used to the place) or Melbourne. Guess ultimately is where job opportunities lie...

Yeah it's tough.. And now 3 more weeks to go before the baby is due, yet we are still waiting for the rest of furnitures (incl. baby's furniture) and our stuffs from the UK to be delivered.:hair: Stressful but I'm trying to keep my cool..

So have you moved to Sydney? You're supposed to be moving this month right? Have you decided which area you'll be moving?
Let me know once you've moved here. Maybe we can catch up. ;)

i am staying with my sister temporary until i can find a rental place to stay. thats the situation in syd right now, difficult to find rental hse. mayb the suburb that i am looking at is also a popular suburb, tats why rental difficult to get .... i went for few inspectn and can u imagine, some of the properties were so hot that u need to queue in order to get in to the hse/unit to look at it, easily abt 30 - 50 person viewing at the same time ... gosh :hair:
the interest rate keep gng up ... making the situation worst ...
some more i am 1st time renting so that put me in a more disadvantage position ...

Ours is a State Sponsored Temporary Visa- sponsored by Adelaide. So the requirement is to stay and work in Adelaide for at least 2 years before they grant us our permanant residency :)
