My four month old was recently diagnosed with a protein intolerance. This has caused her to gain insuffient weight since birth. At 4 months she only weighs 4.9kgs! She is at the 3rd percentile for weight and is not gaining hardly any weight from week to week.
She is such a fussy eater, eating 30-40mls every 3-4 hours. The intolerance has given her reflux and severe gas, which makes her sleeping pattern really eratic because she can't be laid down straight after a feed and even still, doesn't like to sleep flat.
She is still waking 2-3 times a night with hunger because she is not liking the formula that the doctor prescribed to her. Apparently, it has a very bitter taste, it's called Pepti-junior powder.
Is there anyone else out there that can relate or has advice on this issue?

hi tara21 - i read your post and thought it was something i had written ..:)
my bubs has allergy to cows milk and soy and she too is on the pepti junior as well as being breast feed..
at 4 months she was also 4.9 kilos and and wasn't sleeping .... not napping and waking up several times a night... however being that she was breast fed - she was taking both - she does seem to like the pept though - well she doesn't not take it iykwim!!!
two weeks later - she is 5.7 kilos and thriving
(well this week haha ) she has really bad reflux and at the moment she is gaining and happy - that will soon change no doubt as she does have a pattern ofgaining some weight - then stopping the gane and then she looses weight....
she is on losec at the moment and we have finally got a good dose and with the breast feeds and the pepti supplement s (she is on 1 1/4 stregnth just to get the weight gain up ) and for the last four days - she is a happy baby - just :fingerscrossed: it stays that way ..
i know it is so hard you can pm if you wanna chat ...hang in there though and good luck
My ds (19months) has a Milk Protein Allergy...
He was about the same age as your bubs when we found out and had all the same stuff, gas, wind, relux - he would have a full feed and bring the whole lot up again!, failure to gain weight (he was born 3.8kg and was at 4.1kg by 4 months) He was put on Pepti Junior and is still on it now, he cant have any dairy and is only on pepti jnr and soy products (yougurt ect) we have had no probs with the pepti, he loves it now!
PM me if you have any Qs or just need to chat :hugs:
at least they know what it is now!

Thanks everyone for replying.. I'm glad to hear that I'm not the only one. It was great to get some feedback on how it has worked for all of you. DD still hates the taste of the pepti but i'm trying to persist with her. I'm desperate to get her to sleep through a decent nap and/or through the night. I'm hoping it'll be a natural progression from good weight gain to good sleeping patterns.
Let us hope :fingerscrossed:
Please keep sending me your thoughts :hugs:

just a thought - do you think she doesn't like the taste - or maybe could it be the teat on the bottle ???? especially if you have to thicken it - (not sure whether you are or not ) but if so you will need a faster flowing teat to compensate ...

I have been really consistant with the bottles and teats I've been using. I have used the same one since birth on her and she still doesn't seem to like it at all! It's getting a little better and she's eating now anywhere from 70-100mls per feed rather than 30-40mls. I'm hoping she's getting used to the taste. Our visit with the GP is on Saturday next week so I also have my fingers crossed :fingerscrossed: for a good weight gain. I'll try the thickened idea and see if she takes to it much better. I'll keep you all updated.

both my dd's are cows milk and soy protine intolerant my dd1 was only diagnosed at 2years old:( after i drilled the doctor and demanded further tests (they kept telling me it was just li) she weighed 8.9kg at 2 and is now 12.8 at 2 1/2  after being put on neocate and a high cal diet. my dd2 is on elecare and weighed around 3.8kg at 4mths and now almost 9kg:yes:
dd2 was trield on pepti but it was no good for her
cjandmum- i would be care full thickening it as some thickners contain milk and soy protine ie: karicare thinkner i think from memory it only containd .2% but its still enough for some to react to i use one called easy thick
