RISING numbers of women in Britain are seeking state-funded cosmetic surgery on their genitals, doctors say.

Writing in the British Medical Journal, they said the number of "labial reductions" carried out in National Health Service hospitals had doubled to 800 a year over five years.

"More and more women are said to be troubled by the shape, size or proportions of their vulvas", wrote Lih Mei Liao and Sarah Creighton from London's UCL Elizabeth Garrett Anderson Institute for Women's Health.

Articles in women's magazines about "designer vaginas", the rising popularity of cosmetic surgery and Internet promotion by private health clinics were all fuelling demand.

The authors said women seeking surgery were being influenced by idealised images of genitalia shown in pornography and on private genitoplasty websites.

Ms Liao said research was needed into whether surgery was bringing long-term benefits to patients, before the NHS started routinely offering the cosmetic procedure.

Exactly!!! I used to work with a graphic designer who used to work at Picture magazine and his job was to airbrush the girls 'bits'! He hated that job! But no, i didn't work with him at Picture magazine either!

that is so funny because it reminds me of a conversation i had with my friend one night, when she went to great lengths to describe her lop sided hangy thingy....which would be completely normal, but just that she didn't describe it in a normal way.

Hmmm, I am only 28 and have only had one bub, and i haveto straighten before wee otherwise it can go in a sideways stream. Actually, come to think of it, this happened before I had bub too. And I have a very neat vag too, all tucked away nicely... so maybe it is just a female thing. I know I have been out and wee has sprayed on my clothes!!!! How embarrassing

don't worry chocky cake - i weed on the floor a bit the other day when i was in a public toilet and i'm not sure how it happened. i think i was hovering too high and got a bit distracted. lol.

I think it may have it's place... but certainly not when the state pays for it so women can look "better" down there.

I know a woman who had it down because her inner labia was very large and would rub and become very irritated. Sometimes she has to just lay down because the pain was so severe she could barely walk. I think she had a justified reason... it's like a woman getting a breast reduction to solve a backpain problem or something similar.

But to look pretty... I think it's the same as a boob job and I think they're ridiculous too. I guess at least if you get a boob job, people walking down hte street might notice. I can't imagine a lot of people are going to get a look-in at your new vagina unless you're a porn star or something... lol.

I can understand some people getting it done. For example, some people who have suffered extensive vaginal, perineal, labial trauma etc during childbirth. If it gives people back their confidence, good on them! Not for me though, but each to their own! :thumbsup:

The difference between the two being circ and DV's.

Circ can take place at birth.
DV's cannot.

Circs can take place during childhood and adult hood.

DV's can be taken place during childhood and adult hood due to medical reasons and for the sake of the persons individual concern.

I have a friend that had an operation on her labia because the lips just kept growing and it was very uncomfortable for her.
The way it was naturally designed was hurting her. She was only 8 years old but her Parents made the best decision for her that they could.
They helped her pyshically and she feels content knowing she doesn't have her vagina causing her pain when she sits down or does anything really.

Oh I can understand it! When I was younger (before being with a man LOL) I was VERY aware of the fact that I didnt look like most girls! Or at least the girls that show it off! :laughing:

I heard about this a while back and from what I have read regarding this issue, the reason ladies are getting 'designer vaginas' (for non-medical reasons) is because the ladies in porno mags have their bits airbrushed... so that makes us normal women think our bits arent 'right'... and the men think that our bits arent 'right' too...
