Hi girls
I was wondering if someone could answer a question for me about Marriage Certificates? I'm just dreaming at the moment and planning our wedding, even though the engagement ring is not yet on my left hand :o
But, I was hoping someone could tell me how you get a Marriage Certificate and how much it costs? Up until now I was just 'oohing' and 'aahhing' over dresses.....................
TIA

Ummm, I don't really know the answer to your question in its entirety, but here's what I did -
We had a marriage celebrant, rather than a priest, and we met with her perhaps 6 months before the big day. She told us we had to lodge a kind of application form, a Notice of Intention to Marry or some such, which had to be submitted AT LEAST 31 days prior to the wedding day. We had to provide ID to do so (original birth certificates), and she witnessed it, and sent it off.
Her costs, from what I remember, were around the $300 - and if all we had done was stand in front of her and have 2 witnesses, that's all our marriage would have cost. She provided the actual certificate, as in the bit of paper that we both signed.
HTH!

In Queensland (I don't know about other states), the piece of paper you get on your wedding day is just that- a piece of paper. To get your actual Marriage Certificate you need to apply through Births, Deaths and Marriages to get the real one. From memory it was about $40.00. Your celebrant/priest should give you those forms when you do your intent to marry.
Some places will accept the unofficial one as appropriate ID for name changes but government departments such as Dept Transport (for changing your licsence) will require the official Marriage Certificate.

OP- if you look up the births, deaths and marriages website for your state you can get more info on their and if it's too confusing you can email them your questions and generally they're happy to answer them all (I asked heaps when we were engaged:o but they were really nice)
ETA: here is a link to their website (http://www.nsw.gov.au/Relation_results.asp?area=MARRIAGE_RELATION_LIFE_S NSW&parent=RELATION_LIFE_SNSW) which should help you somehow (sorry didn't look too hard at it though)
Snuffys Mum - It was changed to that not long after I got married in Feb 04. My bestie and SIL were both disappointed that I had my wedding day one accepted every where and they had to go buy theirs and they got married within a year of me.
I now realise if anything happens I need to have the official certificate:rolleyes: so I have to get that organised soon:yes:

yep same as canberra (or maybe it was 45 now... same as a birth certificate)
and i didnt send off for it for a little while after my wedding. and then it took me a good few months afterwards to actually take it around and change my name (year and a bit later, i think i FINALLY have changed it everywhere)
but yes, the one you get on the day is just commerative.. and make sure when you send off for the new one, you get the standard one.. as there are diff picture commenerative ones there as well!
check ont he birth death and marriages website for your state, they shoudl give you price lists there!

what Snuffy's Mum said.
I'm in SA and got married in WA.
Even though many places let you use the 'fake' certificate to change names I just got the 'real' one anyway and now we have it with our birth certificates etc for future reference.
sorry abit of the topic but if you need to lodge it before hand and both sign it etc (which i know you do as one of my besties just got hitched) how do people organise those weddings where they surprise their other halves on the day?

Perhaps both parties lodge and intent to marry in advance and one acts on it at a later date? I think you have 12 months or something like that before it becomes void.
Apart from that, I have no idea?
