student loan repayments?

hey fellow kiwis
I am just wondering what you have done about your student loans while over here.
I just rang them to change my address, they had my last address while living here, and they told me they didnt know i was overseas :rolleyes:
Anyway i asked what the situation is about repaying since i am living over here and not working, he didnt know and someone is going to ph me back sometime.
I am worried, do you know what they do if you cant repay any money on it?

i still havent told them were overseas and its been nearly four months :o
theres a website you can go on i think its an ird one ill find it for you, i think you have to talk to someone though if you have trouble repaying it.
they charge interest if you dont live in nz :mad: i do know that

Hi I have a student loan.. that is HUGE due to the interest on it over the last 11 years.. don't think I'l ever pay it off.. & if you owe money let me tell ya there'll find you,you can pay it from here in installments each year.

Do you know what happens if you don't pay???
Im pretty sure eventually it will be linked to the data base system at the airport, you may get in but maybe not out> well that would be my case.. I haven't paid any for ages..

If you cannot pay you fill out an IR40 which is a statement of your financial position. Then you can nominate an amount you think you can pay, or not. They are usually pretty good about it.

I just got a letter from them saying they were wiping all late fees at the moment, and you can go onto the website and apply for a 3 year repayment holiday. Sounds good to me!:thumbsup:

Thanx yes can no way pay for it in FULL, prob never pay the thing off.. yes my interest was wiped.. wonder if you can print one of those IR40.. of the net?? never heard of the 3 yr repayment holi.. can you still get it if your've been living here for awhile.. also my loan was taking out in 1996!! i was only 16.. took living expensives course fees the lot!! Hairdressing.. i was sucked in... im a mum now but am going back parttime? one to two days a week..

Hi,

There is a student loan amnesty being offered at the moment, it closes in March 08. They will wipe any interest and penalties up to the date you apply for the amnesty and arrange to make payments or advise what your situation is. It is on www.ird.govt.nz (http://www.ird.govt.nz) site.
I am holding off til Feb cause don't want to pay before then!
