I’ve been reading everyone else’s birth stories for the last few months… wondering what mine would be like and if it would be as inspirational as some of the ones on here have been to me!! So here goes:

Cast
The Preggers One – Anita
DP – Peter
The Doula – my mum
The OB – Dr Karen Chandler
Midwife – Julia

…and introducing Lily Grace as The Baby.

Thursday 10/05/07
I trundled along to my weekly OB appointment, trying to think calm, positive thoughts. For the last 6-7 weeks my blood pressure had been high and of some concern. However I had no traces of protein in my urine, no visual disturbances, no headaches, two blood tests had come back clean, 3 x CTGs had been perfect… there was nothing to indicate a real problem!! I suspected it was a touch of ‘white coat syndrome’, as my BP had only really climbed when a new midwife at The OB’s rooms started to check my BP – it just seemed a little coincidental. (Plus my mum, who is an RN and middie was taking my BP weekly as well, and it was normal!) Anyway, The OB was happy with my last round of CTG monitoring and an ultrasound I’d had that Tuesday – although there were indications of some calcification of the placenta. Armed with this knowledge, The OB decided she would do an internal… and found me to be 2cm dilated!! Doing an S&S she stretched me to a good 3-4cm. She made a tentative appointment for me the following Monday, but seemed fairly confident she’d see me before then.

I waddled off with a few cramps, some bleeding and a giddy feeling that I’d probably be seeing The Baby very soon!! I rang DP and The Doula and told them, then freaked when I realised I still didn’t have enough nighties for hospital. I made a quick trip to K-Mart and stocked up. Also bought a big block of peppermint Aero chocolate, telling myself that it was my reward for a cervix well thinned. :P

Thursday night… contractions off and on, but no dice. However, I was unplugged by the time I went to bed… so knew things were about to kick off.

Friday 11/05/07
Woke up with no real contractions to speak of, which disappointed me. DP and I talked about going for a walk in the Botanic Gardens on Saturday if things didn’t move along, seeing as it was forecast to be a lovely day. Drove DP to work, went home and mooched around.

Nothing all day, save a few cramps.

Picked DP up from work, and received a phone call from The Doula, saying she’d come around for dinner as she wanted to give us a quilt she had just finished for The Baby. DP and I made a sumptuous meal of sausages and mash with peas and corn… with apple crumble for afters. Nice comfort food! We sat around in the dining room until about 10pm when The Doula decided she should go home and get to bed early… just in case!! I found it difficult to settle that evening, feeling weirdly angsty. DP went to bed at about midnight.

Saturday 12/05/07
I finally headed off to bed at 1am but could hear water gushing away in the street. I decided I had to investigate, and grabbed the Maglight. Imagine a big fat preggers lady in the dark, at 1am, on the phone to SA Water demanding they send someone to fix a burst water main in our street… not pretty!

So I finally got to sleep, woke up 2 hours later at 3am and thought ‘something’s not right’! I felt a slight trickle and made a mad waddle for the loo!! There, my own water main burst!! I whacked a fresh pad on and went to break the news to DP. After he gave me a goofy, excited grin he got up and showered. I rang The Doula, and she decided to do the same thing then head over to our place. Rang the hospital and reported contractions 8-9 minutes apart which started up in the half hour after my waters broke. They told me if I was comfortable to stay put until I felt ready. SMS’ed the_original_duchess who rang me quite excited about the fact that it was all happening! I also received an SMS out of the blue from friend who is holidaying in the USA quoting Wayne’s World “Hi, I’m in Delaware”. To which I replied “Hi, I’m in labour”.

After DP showered, he started on the dishes from the night before. I felt a bit lost and unsure what to do next, so I wandered down to the lounge, sprawled over my fitball and watched Anitques Roadshow. The contractions were starting to come closer together and were getting stronger. They felt very much like strong period pain, which is what The Doula had forewarned me about. They were a little erratic; one would be 7 mins… then 5 mins… then 3 mins… then back to 7. The Baby was kicking up a storm still, so that was good news. The Doula arrived just before 5.30am, checked my blood pressure and found it to be normal. Just when I wondered if things might settle down, as my contractions felt too mild, things REALLY started happen!!
Within less than 15 mins, they started to hit me 5 mins apart! And I mean HIT! I had to get off of my fitball and walk around. I rang the hospital, and told them I didn’t think I could hang on too much longer at home and we’d be in shortly.

DP drove us to the hospital with The Doula following close behind. I had 2 contractions in the car on the way to the hospital (about a 10 min drive), and if there was any doubt before that things were slowing or stopping they definitely put those doubts to rest!! In between the contractions I concentrated on the Everything But The Girl CD we had playing in the car which helped me really focus. We walked into the hospital just after 6am and had to stop halfway to the maternity ward to ride out a contraction against a wall.

(continued)
We were greeted straight away and shown to our labour suite. DP was quite pleased as it was his favourite suite out of the 4 we were shown on our tour (and the last one I had a CTG in!). We started to get settled, with DP pulling out some floor mats for me and a fitball. The Doula put one of my birthing CDs on which I’d randomly put together – the first track was The Smiths “How Soon Is Now?”. My ironic choice in music continued throughout the morning.

I had a 20min CTG monitoring which came up trumps – contractions 4 mins apart and The Baby coping extremely well! The midwife asked if I wanted to have an internal at that point, and I refused wanting to keep ignorant for a little while longer. Truth be told I probably would’ve been pleasantly surprised how far along I was!
Those ‘period pains’ were coming on stronger and longer… and made me want to pee. And so I started my love affair with the toilet throughout my labour. It was the only place I really felt comfortable!! I tried the fitball again, but it just didn’t cut it anymore. I wanted to have a shower, but I couldn’t get myself sorted around my contractions to undress, get in the shower etc. So I lumbered around the suite, periodically sitting on the loo just to ride out contractions and sometimes hung over the bed (which had miraculously turned into a modified seat for squatting on).

I made it to just after 7am with no pain relief, relying on DP and The Doula to coach me through each contraction specifically telling me to just relax into them and let them do their work. My birthplan had specified that I didn’t want any pain relief offered, and that if things were to get desperate I’d ask for something. After each contraction I’d say to myself “that wasn’t tooooo bad… let’s just see what the next one is like”. The Midwife pretty much left us alone during the first hour, popping in every now and then to check how I was and monitor The Baby’s heartbeat. Everything seemed to be moving along well, albeit a lot quicker than I had anticipated!!

Just before 7.30am I hit transition. I had read about some women getting intense full on contractions, and others who wanted to ‘just go home’. Mine wasn’t too bad. I managed to bring up what was left of the previous night’s sausages and veg and my contractions actually gave me a bit of a break!

The Midwife then stuck her head around the door to inform me that The OB actually wasn’t on call that weekend, one of the other OBs from the practice was. However The OB had told The Midwife that she wanted be there to deliver The Baby, regardless! She was just jumping into the shower and would be at the hospital ASAP; if I could just hold off pushing for a few minutes. And if things started moving quickly, she’d come in wet! :D I also had to have an internal at that point – 8cm and dilating quickly!! WOOHOO! At that point there was ironic music moment no.2: Kajagoogoo “Too Shy” with the lyric “You're moving in circles, won't you dilate. Baby try…”. Believe it or not I was able to laugh throughout a contraction when I heard that.
As we waited for The OB, I was getting DEEESPERATE to push. The contractions had hit me again hard and fast and I was beginning to contemplate wether I should as for gas or not. Instead The Midwife came in with some essential oils and got the oil burner going. It definitely gave me some relief; however poor old DP had an allergic reaction to the oil blend with his skin breaking out in a rash and his eyes watering!! Being the trooper he is though, he put up with it for a good half-an-hour whilst he crouched next to me in the bathroom – yes, I was on the loo… AGAIN! (Someone finally put him out of his misery, turned the burner off and opened the door to the outside patio.)
The Midwife ended up ringing The OB on her mobile, telling her to hurry as I was getting pretty close. The OB was parking her car apparently, telling The Midwife to tell me to HANG ON!!! She finally arrived in jeans and a t-shirt ready for a casual Saturday morning delivery telling me, “right, you can start pushing now, sweetie!”.

I pushed for a good 20mins, in the modified squat position on the bed before I decided I really just wanted to sit on the loo. Again. So I parked myself on there and had a bit of a pushing session which really helped things along! Poor old DP though almost lost his right hand, and I was probably close to wrenching the support rail off the bathroom wall. I later found out that whilst I was doing this, The Doula went and had a quick breakfast at the nurses station (such the opportunist!)!!

I was coaxed back to the bed by 8.30am where I was set up to do the real hard work. The Baby was still coping extremely well. I was asked if I wanted a mirror set up – which initially when I was pregnant I had thought “oh god, why would I want to see what’s going on!?”… but labour makes you do funny things so I told them to bring it on in! I seriously think this helped me push, as it gave me a real ‘goal’. I could see this mass of dark hair and it really got me quite amped up! I asked (!) if I could touch my The Baby’s head and The OB told me to go ahead and do so. That really was amazing moment, and gave me a real incentive to get this little bubba out!! So I kept pushing through each contraction – 3 pushes with a quick breather in between. And the words that will forever run around my head whenever I think of The Baby’s birth:
“Okay… Push!! Keeppushingkeeppushingkeeppushingkeeppushingkeeppu shing… excellent!”
I also found I had two rather strange but effective focal points when I couldn’t push… one was a green safety sign on the wall opposite me which reminded staff to put on gown/apron and gloves for delivery. The other was a tiny fishing village in Cornwall that DP and I visited 2 years ago. I have no idea why I chose either, but they worked a treat! I either looked at the sign and hoped that The OB and midwife had their gloves and aprons on… or closed my eyes and retreated back to Cornwall.
As The Baby’s head really made it’s way out, I experienced what was probably the worst pain of the whole birth. Streeeetching and burning agony… although again, not as bad as I had envisaged. The OB would get me to stop pushing at times to stretch me a little more and control the delivery, but all in all the perineal massage really started to pay off.

Then… all of a sudden, there was a little face!! The OB told me to STOP pushing so she could rotate the shoulders. I honestly did try… but Lily Grace had her own agenda and slipped out in a hurry with The OB just catching her!! All the pain suddenly stopped (which still amazes me!) and I had a little squirmy baby on my chest!! Even though I had asked for the cord to be cut after it started pulsating, they had to cut it almost immediately as she was on a short leash – but I didn’t really care. The Doula helped me attach The Baby for her first feed and we had some quality mum and bub time as the placenta was delivered which was like a slight tugging and not at all painful. DP was quite interested in the delivery of the placenta – strange for someone who found it difficult to even watch a TV birth! The OB showed it to me – all intact and with a few white spots (the calcification). She then told me I had a small amount of skin tearing and a tiny tear through some muscle, due to The Baby coming out in such a rush!! I only needed 3-4 stitches, thankfully – unfortunately the first local didn’t work… and the second one was only a wee bit effective. I was too rapt up in my little one though to really care.

We waited two hours for a room to become available in the maternity ward. It was a great time for DP, The Baby and I to bond. I managed a shower, then we were bundled off to our super-deluxe room with queensized bed!

I had a few of the midwives stop in and congratulate me on a smooth first birth and being able to manage it all completely pain free with hardly any noise and fuss!! One of the midwives who popped in, ran the ante-natal class we went to 4 weeks earlier. She was running one that day and asked if I would mind coming in to talk about my birth experience as she had just been speaking about my birth that morning!! I thought, sure.. .why not!! So I managed to hold conference with about 25 new parents-to-be for half-an-hour talking about my birth, what it was like and how I managed to keep it drug-free! And of course everyone was able to ogle The Baby… only a few hours old and already a super-star.

So all in all, it was an extremely positive birthing experience. I proved to myself (and others who had doubted me) that I could do it all drug and intervention free. For that I have to thank the major players: DP, The Doula, The Midwife and The OB. All wonderful people who listened to what I wanted and helped me achieve it.

Apologies for the length... i do tend to prattle on! :D

Labour length - a little more than 6.5hrs
Bubs stats - 3.34kg / 49cm long

Thanks for such an inspiring story. I think we hear far too many horror stories when we are preparing ourselves. I read yours a couple of times just to make sure it sank in that birth can be great. I did have a giggle over the mirror and touching the head. My thoughts at the moment are "no frickin way" but its good to know that it's not unrealistic to change your mind in the moment.

Many congratulations to you and your family.

p.s. which hospital did you go to ... it sounds great!

:yelclap: Anita- well done!
I've only just managed to spot your birth story.

I love the burst water main bit!
And I too could not get off the loo- at home & hosp it was a place I could go and feel comfy!

Did you use the birthing stool at all?

Not really relevant but what labour room did you have- I was in number 4 I think.
And well done on getting a 'honeymoon suite'-we had number 3.

I was put in 1 the first time I went to the hospital- that's where my nephew was born too.

We loved the courtyard- not that we got out there much but it was such a nice change and we could take Hugh outside:)
