Allright, I have posted about solids before, but I still don't get it.
I want to start little dude on solids, but the books are confusing me. They talk a lot about finger food.
I thought he was supposed to start on puree?
Can I give him both? Won't he choke if I give him finger food?
I made up some sweet potato puree to give little dude and he just laughed at it.
He doesn't know what he is doing either!!!!!!!!!!

I think the way my brother started solids was he was pestering my dad at dinner time, so dad gave him a spoon of mashed potato - lil bugger wouldn't leave him alone after that!
I'd say best to start with mashed stuff, and try to feed it to bubs, I wouldn't leave it to their own devices. Or pretend it's yours as most kids are curious and want to know what you have and they don't.
And always stick with the food that you eat - I'm not really into the idea of buying baby food as I don't know whats in it and I probably wouldn't eat any of it anyway.
But be persistent, and good luck :)

I agree with Erin, don't bother buying jars of food or anything... save some leftover vege's from tonight's dinner (eg pumpkin, anything that cooks down really soft) and then just tomorrow heat it in the microwave (be sure to stir it well and check it's not too hot) and offer it to him at a time you're sure he's hungry
Or try him on yogurt (how old is he? I think the "baby yogurt" says start from 6 months. That's how old Vallerie was when I started her on it).
One tip - if you find his tongue is poking out almost automatically when you put food in his mouth, it means he's too young for solids just yet.
:D Have fun!
Oh and another tip, when he starts getting right into solids, put one of those $2 vinyl tablecloths on the ground under the highchair...... take it outside, hang it on the clothesline and hose it off when finished!!
hey :)
I was given a product at one of my showers - I THINK it is a tommie tippie brand(PLEASE dont make me unpack the box!!! I have stashed the 'older' stuff away :) ) - it is like a green mesh pocket - with a ring handle (it is purple and green)
the idea is that you put solids in the mesh bit (like grapes, pear, apple, ice etc) and the baby can chew on the mesh while holding the ring - and it reduces the chance of choking... I know several mums who LOVE them. It was only from Big W - cost less then $10 I think... in the baby section with the cups and spoons...
better still it is dishwasher safe... so you just rinse the mesh - get rid of all 'bits' and shove it in the dishwasher!!!! how easy :)
dont know if you are interested... but other mums have told me how great they are...

Oooo I want one of them!
I am going to have a look for one in Coles this afternoon.
if you cant find it in the shops - let me know ... I'll bring it with me to the dinner at the norman... so you can have a look :)
(sometimes it is easier when you KNOW exactly what you are looking for!! )
- one mum I know used it with ice or frozen grapes for teething... her little girl loved it!!

Yep start him on pureed foods & only one at a time to check for allergies so basically you start with one vegie for a few days & if that goes ok then start another & if this is fine then you know you can mix them does that make sense ? Hope so LOL !
Fingers foods are for when they are a little older & are able to sit up properly as its a problem with choking etc.
I agree with the_queen dont bother buying any tins etc especially at this stage as bubs will only have a teaspoon or so worth so you end up wasting it all as even if you only pull out enough & refrigerate the rest it only keeps for 24hrs.
Best thing is when you are doing your veggies for dinner separate some for bubs & then puree & freeze or refrigerate if only a small portion. If your going to freeze use an ice cube tray & then once they are frozen you can put into bags or containers with what their names are & then all you do is grab a cube & defrost ! Easy !

Okay so I just gave the dude some rice cereal...
It went everywhere
I mean we had to both shower off afterward.
He kept grabbing the spoon and trying to do it himself...and I don't think much went in.
But it's just to learn for the moment isn't it?
What do I do about his hands? Hold them?
Hmmm and I thought breastfeeding was a big learning curve ;)
Hey Alli - I am not sure how old the little dude is but my experience with DD2 was that she was not interested in puree because I had to feed it to her - she would only eat 'finger foods' - so small slices of bread, small pieces of banana, pumpkin cubes, stewed apple pieces before you mush it - anything that is soft etc. The main thing to remember is - at this stage it is all about them experimenting with texture and taste - and it will be messy! Just have fun with it - and be prepared to eat in the bath if you need to! (Good for cherry season!)
