What kind of sewing machine do I need? Does it have to be a 'really good' one or will a 'beginners one' be fine?

I haven't done any sewing since grade 8! But want to start making my own nappies... so I'll need to invest in a machine.

What works for you? Does anyone make nappies with just a regular not-too-expensive machine?

A regular basic machine will be fine

Personally though if you want something realiable, easy to use and a machine that will last then I'd be looking at the $400 - $500 mark

But you can get a basic machine for about $200 - $300, it just probably won't last as long, and you might be limited attachments, button hole stitches and stuff like that

The only thing you have to have for making turned and top stitch nappies is a straight stitch and a zig zag stitch

if you are just starting back after a few years of not sewing and only want to mack mcns then a basic machine would be fine. I made my first 5 on my old singer that is over 26 years old mum had one exactly the same when i was born. I got mine second hand for about $100 but dh let me upgrade for mothers day and i got a $300 husqvana which is so flash and modern. you can buy some really cheap ones new but the can be very hard to get repaired and usually only last the lenght of their warrenty Janome have a very nice little beginners machine for $189 atm but you have to go to a Janome dealer to get them. If you go to a sewing shop and talk to them then they can help you. I notice you are in brisbane if you are anywhere near mt gravatt then pm me and i will let you know the one i brouhgt my machine from they are selling the above mentioned janome machine and if you buy a machine from them they give you as many free lessons as you need to learn how to use your new machine properly.
