Our little Ethan Christopher made his appearance. I haven't written it out here yet, so I thought better late than never.
We had been trying to get pregnant for about 8 months, and then the weekend before V alentine's Day 2006, I got really sick after eating Chinese food. Ok this was strange! So the next morning I took a test. Sure enough:bfp: We were so excited and I knew I was about 6 weeks along. So we told everyone. People thought we were crazy, but I figured if I did have a miscarriage then I wanted people to be able to be around and support us through it. We made it to 12 weeks no worries and then one morning I woke up with a gush of bright red blood. I freaked out! I called the hospital and they said come in right away. I was alone at home and DH was at work. So I went alone (silly I know) and the middy said my cervix was tightly closed and there was a strong heartbeat. An ultrasound confirmed. So I was sent home. All was well!
At 38 weeks they sent me for another U/S because I am diabetic and they wanted to see how big the baby was. The doctor said all was good and our little guy was only 7lbs. All good and I could go up to 41 weeks before and induction. I went back a week later for another checkup and suddenly the head OB said the baby was 10lbs and I had to be induced. I was like "ok so my baby gained 3lbs in 6 days?" But my husband didn't want to take any chances.
The next day my DH and I arrive at the hospital at 8pm. I get all settled in and the midwife tells me that they woulnd't be inducing me until the morning since there were tons of babies being born and women in labour. There weren't enough middys to go around. So I sent DH home and settled in for a final sleep before the party started! At 3 am the midwife woke me up and said they were going to give me the gels and by 10 that morning the doctor would be in to check it all.
So my wonderful hubby arrived at 7 am to be by my side. The doctor came in to give me an IV for the cintosin (sp?) He started on my left hand near my wrist. By now I was having mild to medium contractions and wasn't feeling well. He went to put the needle in and when he did he must have hit a nerve and my whole hand had horrible pain in it. I started crying and he apologized. My hand is still numb to this day! He tried again and missed. Then a 3rd time. By now I am sobbing and begging him to stop. He said "once more" and I looked him straight in the eye and said "I swear if you miss this time, i will shove that needle in your...." and then my husband stopped me from finishing that sentence. Well he missed again and after his 6th try he got it in. When he finished, he apologized and I said "get the hell out!"
The doctor made her way in at 11 and said I was only at 2cm. So they let me go for another few hours and then came back. I was still at a 2 at 5pm. She managed to break my water in hopes that I would start. The upped the meds and my contractions were aweful.
I did this un-medicated fo 12 hrs! Then we tried gas and all it did was make me dizzy and light headed. Next was the pethidine. Helped me fall asleep between contractions. Finally after another 2 hrs of not dilating i begged for the Epi. My hubby suggested I wait another half hour and I said "Jared if you don't get me the epidural now, you will wish you had it!!"
So they got it and had it done in a matter of seconds. I was up on the bed and talking as if I weren't even in labour!
The baby's heart rate was dropping to low between contractions and they decided to talk other options. They could lower my dosage and see if that helped or they could do a c-section. They asked us what we wanted and we said whatever was best for him. So they set up theatre and within a matter of 20 minutes I was on the table. After 3 buckets full of vomit and 2 midwives having to change their clothes, I managed to see my son!
This was at 4:13 am the morning of October 27th. He was then whisked off to NICU with a hole in each of his lungs. But after 2 days in the NICU we were in a room together. We stayed 8 days in hospital because he was losing weight and I wasn't doing all the things my body should have. In the end we made it home!
He was only 7lb 6oz and 20.5 inches long. Needless to say the Dr. had it wrong!
Here is a photo of him at the hospital the day he got out of NICU
