Hi,

My son is 5 weeks old and life is becoming increasingly difficult. I thought he had wind problems so I put him on infants friend, then when that didn't seem to work I took him to my doc and she diagnosed silent reflux so I put him on Zantac but that seemed to make him worse and vomit more, then I changed his formula to an anti reflux but that was a nightmare! Now I am at my wits end, he is not sleeping well and now he won't drink properly. Can anyone give me any ideas? Should I change his formula, keep up the Zantac or just live with it and fumble through for the next 6 months? I am out of ideas and exhausted.

What formula do you have him on?
Have you tried the "disposable" bottles?

Crap sorry, this deleted my message I just wrote so here goes again.

We had DS on S26 when he was newborn and it was very harsh on his stomach. We moved him to NAN HA Gold which was much better.

Disposable bottles are made by avent and I think pigion do some. They have bags in them that deflate as bub sucks reducing air intake. It worked for us.

Be careful with over the counter wind meds for a young bub, some have nasty side effects such as reduction in breathing rate.

Hope that helps some.

Another question: how long have you had him on the Zantac for?

Another question, have you tried lactose free formula? Sounds very much like my DD was when she was 5/6 wks old, and we discovered she had reflux and lactose intolerance.

I only had him on Zantac for 3 days as it made him vomit more than usual.

Sounds just like my DS too who also had reflux and was lactose intolerant (one of the signs being constant and painful wind). You could at least give the lactose free formula a go - it won't do any harm if your bubs isn't lactose intolerant. Hang in there, it will get better.

I have heard of some babies having a reaction to the Zantac. Maybe you could ask your Dr to prescribe Losec instead. This is another medication for reflux.

wow i hear you sister!!!!

My little girl was born August 21st 2005 so she is nearly 5 months and we are still dealing with the whole "Colic", silent reflux thing!!! man it is very trying and distressing isnt it?, you have this wonderful baby and all you want to do is sit and look and play but they cry and Cry and CRy...man i was going out of my mind wioth worry i had her checked out by 2 pedi's and they found nothing, she would literally cry from the time she got up to the time she went to bed, although she has slepot through since 9 weeks but all day crying is just nearly unbearable!!!

we have been on let me see-\
Brewers remidy, Zantac, rescue remidy, gripe water, natural colic mix, infacol, man none of which seemed to do any good.......

and she seemed to be in so much pain. but after knowing that she has nothing "wrong" with her its alot easier to handle.
we too went through the whole formula change, from s26 when born, to Nan(YUK), then karicare, and now she is on Karicare thickened formula, she seems to be going for it and still having the odd chuck maybe a good one every week or so.

but the crying has calmed somewhat, but she is still a "high matenance baby" hehehe

she cryed i think for 16 hrs one day, it was a LONG day let me tell you!! heheh

i wish you all the luck and hope you find what works for you....its so trying listening to your baby cry non stop..........and everyone telling you that "baby's cry" doesnt help!!!! but keep with it keep smiling and as your baby gets bigger i think they streatch out and its a lot more painless for them, well thats my theory!!! heheheh and one smile at you and all is forgotten!!!!

good luck my friend!!!!

Goats milk has been wonderful for my 3 month old. It has the only formula that he can digest easily. It was also recommended by a naturapath.

Hi

My second and third child had reflux. The second was also lactose intolerant but she did respond to Zantac and I used SMA formula which is slightly heavier than s26 as it has a higher Casein proportion. I am currently dealing with Zantac doses with my third (who has silent reflux) and I have found that I need a good 7 to 10 days on the new dose before I see any difference in improvement. We have also just increased the Losec dose which seems to have made hime vomit more but the pain is diminished. It is the pain that concerns me, vomitting is just mssy!

Good luck
