View Full Version : Won't Sit
DS is 7 months old. He's been crawling since he was 5 months old, and rolling both ways since he was 4 months. He's trying to pull himself up on things and can stand by himself, holding on, and when he's crawling he often gets right up on his feet (head down, bum up, leaning on his hands) like a yoga position.
He will not, however, sit on his bum!
Every time we try to sit him up, he arches his back so that he's laying down again and rolls over onto his belly. Or he just falls over to one side or flops onto his back (and hits his head, and cries ). He won't even sit leaning forward on his hands if we prop him that way, he just keels over.
He's extremely strong so we know that he could do it if he wanted to. He just won't. The only time he 'sits' is on our knee, and he's done that since he was about 4 weeks old. Even in his highchair and stroller he slumps, and won't sit up.
The closest he gets to sitting is kind of laying on one hip, propped up on one arm (his favourite playing position).
Is this normal? When will he just sit up by himself? I'm starting to think he'll be walking before he can sit

OMG! Up until yesterday I could have written your post about my DD! After DS who sat at 6 months I was beginning to think she'd never do it either.
She has been rolling since 4 months, and commando crawling since about 7 months. Just this week she's starting taking some real crawling steps. But no sitting whatsoever.
She also slumped in her pram (until I got the Bugaboo which sits her up more firmly), and is slowly starting to not slump in her high chair.
She goes to daycare 2 days a week and yesterday one of the carers there said she was getting better at her sitting. So last night we gave it a go. Sure enough, she sat for a few minutes. We did it a few times today too.
That lying on the side on one arm is the cutest thing though isn't it? DD has been doing that for ages.
Anyway, she's 9.5 months now so I wouldn't start panicking about your DS yet! LOL
having had a child with hypotonia i can rest your mind at ease by saying that if they are slow to develop due to physical factors you will notice them. ie jake was floppy from birth like a ragdoll, and kane they are worried about as he seems too stiff . if jets crawling, pulling himself up at a young age theres nothing physically wrong, he's just stubborn (like his dad lol) and just choosing to do the activities he likes
Don't know if a bumbo seat might help... if you can get him into it. Try one out in a baby shop. It holds them in the correct sitting position.

Phoenix was like this, and now stands around doing a pelvic thrust Elvis style holding onto the furniture
I asked my MCHN and she said "Why sit if you can stand, why stay still if you can move?"
It's fine. I say sitting is boring, who would sit if they could crawl, stand, and do Yoga poses??
Jordan didn't sit for AGES
I took him to a child physio who said... not too worry yet, they all have their own time... if he's pulling himself up and crawling there's nothing wrong with his muscles....
He'll learn to sit in his own time..
And he did... he was sitting 'properly' at around 10.5 months... a whole 2 months after he started crawling and pulling himself up.

Yep i too had a lazy sitter lol.
It was easier to get mummy to prop him of course !!!
Hehehehe he figured it out soon enough & he was on his merry way !
I wouldnt stress your little man obviously has no real "issues" with development if he is crawling already ! He is just doing things a little differently thats all !

;) My little DS is still commando crawling at 7 mths he hasnt crawled at all yet, although he does sit on our laps and in his high chair and pram, he starts to slump over after a while and needs to be fixed back up or taken out for tummy time...as said above just lazy sitters...
Don't panic.
My DD would only kneel, never sit. She has only started to sit on her bum this week and she just started walking about two weeks ago (at 13 months). She looks funny sitting on her bum now as she's never done it before .

My DD can also crawl (sort of) and roll but still not sitting and shes a week older than Jethro. I'm not worried about it yet. I guess they do things at their own pace.

DD wouldn't sit until after she could crawl. It was strange because I remember reading in a Baby Book that babies PHYSICALLY couldn't crawl until they were able to sit upright.
I dunno WHEN DD started sitting, but I remember it was a while after she began to crawl.
I think it's just something you have to wait to happen... it'll happen soon enough.
My niece is 8 months old and is not at all interested in sitting. She isn't crawling either, but she LOVES to stand. She really doesn't like the whole bending in the middle thing required for sitting. She's just started kneeling up on her knees and I suspect that before we know it she will be crawling (she rolls and wriggles everywhere now) and walking ... don't know when she'll decide she wants to sit.
My ds is 4 months old and loves to sit (partially supported) at almost any opportunity, but my nephew is the same age and he'd prefer to stand than sit, so I suspect that this tendency starts at an early age.

I definetley think it's normal!!
Or else I had a freaky child- although that is possible..
Ronan was walking before he could sit. Just meant that when he fell, he landed on his head instead of his bum  They were strange times- it looked very weird!!
But he was 9-10 months old when he started walking. Another month later and he was sitting fine :D
Ariene was crawling at 6-7 months and sitting at 8. So again, slightly back-to-front development there. Don't stress hun- they can develop much, much differently to how Mother & Baby and Practical Parenting state they do....
oh totally fine dont stress about it ds is 10 months old and up until last week wasnt sitting only in the bath and high chair and on our laps then all of a sudden a few days ago i put him sitting as i always do and waited for him to fall and nothing now hes sitting woo hoo! so im sure he'll do it in his own time.. ds is crawling sitting pulling himself up but cant get from lying down to sitting but he'll get there one day. so i try not to stress about it.
