View Full Version : Qld Govt - 12 wks paid leave - YAY!
Hi,
I got some great news last week. The Qld Govt introduced new paid parental leave arrangements that provides for 12 weeks paid leave (or 24 wks half pay) for Qld public sector employees back dated to 1 July 05. This is an increase of 6 weeks.
YAY!! What a bonus that I really needed right now!
This is a great step forward and hopefully the private sector will follow where it can.
(So, now I think I'll have to go back to work for a bit before TTC#2 :D )
Wohoo!
I wonder if they give more paid time off for dad's too?? My hubby is a gov employee... though he's fed gov, so it'd be different

:) I got a letter in the mail today about this :) my half pay runs out when school returns ... and now I will get paid for LOTS longer .. (breathing sigh of relief) - I feel soooo much lighter !!!
now I am just deliberating if I will tell DH ... he has been good about not spending money ... and I dont want that to change :) \

How does the back dating to July 05 work? I work for Qld Health so this new agreement will affect me.
I started my maternity leave in June (12 weeks at half pay) and have been on long service leave since. I'm due back in March (when long service leave runs out). Is it possible that I might have some more maternity leave???:D
As much as I need the adult interaction of the workplace, I'm terrified about long day care and how we'll cope. Maybe I can delay the inevitable just a little bit longer?
Let me know if this might be the case. I'll might call the HR dept and see what they say. Here's hoping!

FANTASTIC!! :D
I'd worked out that to take Semester 2 off I'd be taking 9 weeks of it upaid (if I used ADO, annual leave and the 12 weeks half paid) but now I don't have to worry about ANY unpaid!
Wooooooo!!! :D
I can even take a few more weeks off at the start!!! :D

I think these numbers are only for education queensland employees, as they are our payroll people.
If you ring your HR or payroll office they should be able to tell you if you are entitled. My understanding as an education queensland employee, is if you strated M/L before july 05 you too are entitled to access the additional leave on a proportionate basis.
Edcaution Queenslands and Queensland Health do have a lot of policies which are similar ie. breast feeding in the workplace, so I am assuming you would be eligble as I got the above info from the queensland teachers union website.

Sam...I found a public sector circular that states if you started maternity leave up to 6 weeks prior to 1 july 05 you will be entitled to access the additional paid leave on a proportionate basis-

My understanding is it is a state government intiative, therfor all state gov employees are eligble.

Thanks Maddysmama, I read the document and it does look like I will be eligible for some more paid leave! I'm calling my HR dept in the morning.
I had just organized to return to my job part- time in 6 weeks after much haggling with bosses (even though that's part of the award entitlements). I'm sure this extra leave time will tick them right off but family comes first!
Going to have sweet dreams tonight!!:)

I work for Local Government and we get didly squat. So not fair, we are technically still government are we not, just not state govt!
Oh well lucky for me I knew this all along and hence only starting to have children now at 30, now that we are set up and able with no financial worries.
Can't wait to have twelve months off, but having some pay would have been nice, oh well!
Lucky for you gals though, good on you.
You lucky girls! Wish I was in the same boat... Now how do I get a job in the public sector...
I get only six weeks paid leave, and I'll have to go back to work after six months (maybe earlier) because money is so tight and our mortgage is huge. DH stresses about money constantly!
Would love a year off though.
I know a girl who works for Catholic Education and she gets 12 weeks paid maternity leave, so it's quite good working for them too.
