I was hoping someone could fill me in.. cloth fitted nappies... how do they work? Where do you get them? Do you need pins/pilchers/liners etc?
So your looking at Fitteds like Baby Beehinds?
For Fitteds you will need a Cover.. A PUL cover or Wool (Which is great for over night use!).
You dont need pins
I can help!! I just started cloth... it was our first day today.
Cloth fitted nappies you can get online (or if you're Lucky IRL in some places)
you don't need pins, you will need covers... try not to use the PVC pilchers coz they'll make bubs sweat and can cause nappy rash... you can buy special covers made from a breathable laminated fabric called PUL.
I've just discovered today that you definitely need liners... to keep bubs dry and make it easier to get poop off the nappy
Um... there are a heap of places online where you can buy fitted nappies. I recommend checking out the Darlings Downunder website... that was the very first one I looked at when I was interested in switching to cloth. It will give you a good idea of what's what.

Ok right so where do you get covers and liners from? Are these reusable too?
covers are definately reusable.. u can also order them online through the same site.
Also check out Baby BeeHinds, Green Kids, The Wee Wuns and Nurture Nappies.
You can buy liners.... but they are very easy to make yourself.
You use polar fleece or microfleece as it draws moisture away from bubs bum.
You can buy it at Spotlight for about $8-9 a metre and then just cut it up to size, depending on the size of the nappies you get.
You don't need to hem or anything as they won't unfrazzle.
I'm making some as I type... I'm cutting them to about 30x13cm rectangles. (but I might make some 'hourglass' shape ones too)
You can also buy wool and fleece covers.... but I'll leave explaining that to the more experienced cloth people.. I still don't fully understand it myself... apparently they rely on evaporation to keep bubs dry, and work, I haven't got mine yet.. they're still in the post.
ETA: Oh I forgot... u can also buy disposable nappy liners at most major supermarkets... they just help to catch the poo

Also a good idea to check out a demonstrator perhaps so you can see them in real life before you purchase. Some nappy sites have demonstrators.
Polar fleece or microfleece makes great liners, or you can buy flushable liners, which personally I only use when we are out.
A fitted plus a cover is great to have 2 lines of defence for poop.
All in one's are good for outings but tend to be less absorbent, some have snap in boosting.
I'd recommend you check out ozclothnappies as they have a lot of information as well as links on where you can buy them in real life or see them before purchase, as well as links to online suppliers.

Ohh I seee so from what I am reading here, you can get all in ones... what do you think of these? Or is it better to go and buy the nappy, cover and inserts seperatly.. oh and how absorbant are these modern cloth nappies??

Oh and do you find they fit well... or are they quite bulky?

Pockets are good for quick drying
AIO are easy because you dont have to stuff them but they take longer to dry.
Fitteds are good for night because they tend too keep the wee in better.
I haven't bought any all in ones yet as I heard they have a much longer drying time than the pocket nappies.
I've got 3 pocket nappies (and 3 in the post) and I used them on the boys today. They were excellent! A fair bit chunkier than a sposie, defiantely less chunky than a fitted with a cover! And they fit fine underneath their pants.
I like the pocket nappies as all you have to do is put the inserts inside them and then they're as easy to use as a sposie, coz they don't need a cover
ETA: But I think they were chunkier because I put both the inserts in it, when I probably could have got away with one. I'm really liking pockets right now!! But I'll have a 'fitted' day tomorrow and see how that goes.

I have a mixture of all 3,i usually use fitteds and a cover for nights and pockets/AIO's during the day.

I think I'm leaning this way too... pockets during the day and fitteds at night/ when we're just at home

Oh my what is a pocket and what is quick drying and what do you mean by stuffing them  :o
A pocket nappy is just that!
It's shaped like a sposie, but is empty inside. (Like pocket bread... ) It has a liner and a waterproof outer and then the middle has a 'pocket' (like a sleeping bag) where you put the 'absorbers'. They do come with 'inserts' (the absorbers) when you buy them... so basically you just pop these inside the pocket and away you go. easy peasy. And when you're washing you just slip them out, wash them and hang them up to dry.... not having them all hanging inside the nappy means you cut down on drying time.
ALSO.... you can use the pocket nappies WITHOUT inserts, as covers for your fitted nappies! double   for versatility!

Pockets are my favourite... but I haven't tried fitteds yet... I've ordered one to try out though!
Pockets are like a nappy with a "pocket" in the back where you stuff in all the absorbant stuff... like hemp or bamboo or microfibre. Personally, I would never use microfibre alone because I don't think it does enough... but it's good to use microfibre WITH hemp or bamboo.
Some pockets come with an insert, some you have to buy seperately.
I find pockets to be the trimmest fitting. I like Swaddlebees Pockets because they're REALLY trim and work well too. You can find those at The Wee Wuns. I also like Pea Pods. They're a very cheap nappy... for about $17.95 you get the pocket nappy, a wetbag (to put them in when you're out so they don't leak all over your stuff), and a hemp pre-fold insert (it's just this flat bit of hemp that you fold up three times and stuff into the pocket nappy). You can also buy Bamboo ones for about $2 more.
A lot of people don't like Pea Pods... maybe because they're not very fancy or anything... but I find they work really well. I know I'm not alone in thinking that way either. I love them, especially for the price.
When it comes to AIOs, I've found that they take forever to dry (I washed some on Tuesday night and they're still wet now... late Wednesday, or rather, in the wee hours of Thursday). I also don't find them very absorbant. I do like my Swaddlebees AIO though, because it comes with a pocket part too, so I stuff that and it's lovely. It still takes forever to dry though.
I'm trying fitteds because I've found that neither pockets nor AIOs are particularly reliable for night-time use. I've got a fitted, a booster and a Fleece Cover on order... so I'll see how they go!
I use fitteds mostly with wool covers (always)
I don't like stuffing pockets.
I have a lot of trim fitting fitteds and so I don't find them bulky (one sized tend to be bulky eg. Baby Beehinds)
I like wool as it works best and if you can knit its the cheapest way :)

I find pockets or AIO's to be the slimmest, but I find fitteds or even a terry flat with a wool cover to be the most reliable. The bulk factor isnt an issue if you have knitted woolies over the top- we used soakers and shorties for summer weather (btw not too hot- actually cooler than anything else over a nappy) and I have just invested in 3 sets of longies & we have another set being knitted as we speak in delicious organic merino wool. These are used instead of other pants and I LOVE them. My aunty called them "trendy little pants" and my SIL's both liked them too. LOL One of them said DD looked like a cute little byron bay baby. I only wish I knew how to knit!

Some all in one's are trimmer but some are not. Some I've found dry faster than other's too, it can be comparing apples and oranges sometimes, so have fold out and snap out pieces such as an itti bitti making them an all in one and other's have it all completely enclosed like a magic all. I have found the magic all to be very fast drying but not as absorbent but more absorbent than the bumgenius aio.
Most cloth nappies look like bub has a bulkier bum but there are some trimmer versions too but may need more frequent changes. I can easily get 4+ hours from a baby beehinds plus cover during the day than the bumgenius, berry plush, happy heiny pocket or swaddlebee aio or pocket and itti in my stash.
The other thing I like about a fitted and cover system is that it is 2 lines of defence against poosplosions so I've never had poop on clothes in a fitted and cover but have with the aio or pockets.
I like the aio's for certain pieces of clothing I want bub to wear or if bub is growing out of the clothes and I want to get a few more wears out of an outfit and I just change more frequently, so I might change before putting down for a nap as well as when waking up for a nap while otherwise I would only change immediately after each feed.

I find pockets are better for under clothes. All bar one kind of AIO I have is too bulky for clothes.
Because you llive in the deep south, I'd rcommend knitting (or getting someone too do it for you) some knitted longies. They can be used over a fitted nappy as a cover, but you can also use them over other nappies too just as pants.

Oooh Kristy are you thinking of joining us & putting little Ebonys bottom in cloth? It is so much fun (sad, as they are only nappies i know. lol) and they are soo cute. I have a few posts with pics of Nick in some of his - have a look when you get a chance - they are in this section somewhere.....here (http://www.bubhub.com.au/community/forums/showthread.php?t=91829) is one.
Nick can fit into baby beehinds bamboo now, and GK pockets, plus most other small sized pockets & AIO/AI2's. I have a range of different ones in my stash - pockets or AIO are great for going out & daycare as you don't have to remember to bring a cover with you. He is a little chunky with some of them on, but his rumpster & monkey doodles are great fits. I also think that the cloth nappies fir better than huggies! Any q's about fitting them on a newborn - fire at me!!

Hi, so do you think the baby beehinds is more absorbent than an itti bitti, bumgenius or Berry Plush then? What about comparing an itti bitti to a bumGenius Pocket?
