Hi there

We had our son circumsized by an EXCELLENT paediatric surgeon Dr Deborah Bailey on the Gold Coast. I cannot recommend her highly enough - she also corrected my son's tongue-tie. her number is 07 5528 2628

She only operates on boys over 6 mths of age so they can have proper pain relief - my boy really didn't suffer much at all.

Be careful with this - I know of one dodgy GP in Brisbane who does these procedures and Dr Bailey told me she ends up correcting one of his botch jobs each week.

PM me if you want more info.

In what way were they botch jobs?

In what way were they botch jobs?

Great question, serendipity22.

It's been my experience on messageboards and talking to parents that often times 'loose circumcisions' are precieved as botched jobs. When less skin is removed, parents often feel that the baby 'doesn't look circumcised' and believe it must be redone. The reality is that as babies grow, they will generally 'grow into' the remnant foreskin and will look circumcised when they're older.

Recircumcising babies in these cases is often just preying on parent's insecurities/fears, and may also end up with these babies having so much skin removed they have excessively tight/painful erections when they're fully grown.

Another reason parents sometimes feel a circumcision is 'botched' is when the baby experiences adhesions, where the skin reattaches to the glans (head) of the penis, often repeatedly. Doctors often rip the skin back during office visits, or instruct parents to pull back the skin after baths or during diaper changes to break the adhesions.

Adhesions are the most common complication of circumcision, so common it's considered more of a side effect. 71% of circumcised boys experience adhesions during the first year of life. (http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/entrez/query.fcgi?cmd=Retrieve&db=PubMed&list_uids=10893633&dopt=Abstract)

It definately be interesting to know the specific reason(s) why Dr. Deborah Bailey is recircumcising so many boys.

Dr Bailey did not mention to me what it was about other children's circumcisions that required them to be repaired. In some cases scar tissue can form over the glans to prevent urination, but as I am not an expert in this field I could not say.

All I know is that we have found an expert doctor to perform this procedure and I have provided her details. What you all do is up to you.

Hi, I just saw a Paediatric Surgeon today who is operating on my 6 week old son. He will be doing a circumcision at the same time as operation. He mentioned that he often has to fix Plastibell circumcisions because the ring slips out of place and causes non straight skin or leaves part of the foreskin.
