My due date was 5th April 2007, Thursday before Easter. I had an appointment this day and the midwife performed a stretch and sweep, we were hoping this would get things moving as I hadn't experienced any niggles. We waited with anticipation all weekend. By the time Tuesday came around, I had resigned myself to the fact that our baby girl would arrive when she was ready. Tuesday afternoon I went for a long walk to get myself out of the house and my mind off waiting.

Low and behold Tuesday night 10th April my waters broke at 9.30pm, much to the surprise of my husband who thought I was having a bad dream. We made our way to the hospital. I didn't feel my first contraction until 10.30pm and went under observation for an hour. The contractions were not consistent, so they admitted me and I stayed the night. Wednesday morning 11th April, I was taken to the birth suite to be monitored again. I was induced at 9am. OMG...it was like being hooked up to an electric chair, there was absolutely no warning as the contractions came on strong and fast, but once again were not consistent. The midwife kept increasing the dosage until we hit 6 contractions in 10 minutes. I laboured at this rate for 3 hours before taking the gas. The next 6 hours on the gas were a total blur, I have no idea how I got through. After labouring with the gas for 9 hours, I was 4 cm dilated. I couldn't believe it, I was hoping for at least 6cm. At this stage, I was absolutely exhausted and asked to have an epidural. Once that epi went in it was absolute bliss, I could actually rest. At my next internal, which was 12 hours since I started, I was only 5 cm dilated. The doctor was called to examine me, but got called away to surgery so by the time he arrived I had had 2 epi top ups and had been in active labour for 16 hours. The doctor announced that I was 6 cm dilated and that I would need to have a c section as my temperature was high and there was risk of infection. I had not prepared myself for a c section and cried uncontrollably. I was prepared for surgery and wheeled into theatre 20 mins later, there was no time to even think about what was going to happen. They tested the epi to see if I could feel sensation and I could, so they topped me up again. After 5 minutes they redid the test, and I could still feel sensation. It was then they broke the news that I would need to go under general. This meant that my husband was not allowed to stay in theatre and had to wait outside, I was absolutely terrified. The last thing I remember was them saying it is 1.45am, and our beautiful girl was born at 1.53am by c section via forceps.

Weight: 4.190 kg (9 pound 3)
Length: 55 cm
Head : 37 cm

Because of my high temperature, she was taken to special care for antiobiotics and I didn't come out of the general until 3.45am.

Wow...what an experience! I tried my best to get her out, but she wasn't budging. We are now 4 weeks on and I am grateful that we have a gorgeous healthy baby girl!

It is the most rewarding thing I have ever done and when I look down at her little face, it was all worth it !
