View Full Version : what kind of car?

well with #4 on the way... we'll be needing a bigger car:D ..cause im fairly sure putting a baby in the boot is illegal in most states:laughing:
so for those with 4 or more...what kind of car do you have?
We don't have 4 or more kids but we do have a seven seater car (we needed to upgrade from our tiny tiny car and figured we'd just save another upgrade in the future!)
We drive a Toyota Avensis. A lot of people have never heard of them but it's a great car! I hate hate hate big cars with a passion (seriously, hate them) but I am comfortable driving this thing, it's very easy to park (I reverse park it between a pole and a car in a not so big car park every single day), roomy (we bought it from a couple who had triplets) and even when all 7 seats are up there is still boot room cause there's an under cover compartment.
Our car is 6 years old or something, so not brand new, but runs awesome and for a large car the tank is on the small side so it's pretty cost effective on fuel.
I am a huge fan of Toyota cars but hate the look of a Tarago and couldn't bring myself to drive one...I say the Avensis is Tarago's sexy little sister!
Oh yeah, each seat has it's own thing for your car seat belt to attach to....you know what I'm talking about!

I cant stand taragos too my freind has one and she was dissappointed with the seating and how you couldnt keep one of the middles folded down to get easy access to the back, we are looking for something similar
when you find the perfect car bronny let me know :D at the moment when this bubs out looks like either me or dh will tag along on the bike but not much fun if its pouring rain :(

im fairly sure putting a baby in the boot is illegal in most states:laughing:
I have 2 kids in the boot of my car.
7 seater Magna stationwagon here. Love it, but the pram doesn't fit unless we put it in the backseat and squish Jacob between it and Troys seat.
Going to see if Troys seat can fit in the seat in the boot when I change it to forward facing, would make things easier.

Oh, forgot to say, congrats on the :bfp: :yelclap:
..cause im fairly sure putting a baby in the boot is illegal in most states:laughing:
Kids in the boot here too:thumbsup: We have a falcon stationwagon with an extra 3 seats in the boot so it is an 8 seater all up. I fit my Valco pram in ok behind the back seat.
I don't like vans:no: Have seen the Avensis and it is nice
How about you just put a bumper sticking saying YES WE OWN A TV BUT WE ARE TOO BUSY HAVING SEX TO WATCH IT:laughing:

 We had a few people say to us when I was preggers with #3 "God dont you have a TV!"
We have a Commodore wagon that is a 7seater - so has 2 seats in the boot! Works well and means we can still drive a 'normal' car.
ok cool... i'll check it out.... i was thinking i would be stuck driving a van with No We Arent Catholic written on the side:D
PMSL! When we fell preggers with number 4 i was worried about too as I'm not a "van girl" either.
Our neighbours have the Avensis and its nice.
We ended up with Toyota Lancruiser- i was really reluctant at first (you know the 4wd issue in the "burbs") and didnt really want to buy it but now we have i LOVE IT! We take it on the beach and off road whenever we can. Its great to be able to park your car on the sand and fall out of the car rather than have to trudge down the beach with 4 kids and all assorted paraphernalia involved! VERY convenient!
BUT very thirsty on the fuel.
Good Luck in your search BJ!
We have 9 kids and we have a 8 seater starwagon as well as a station wagon, both cars are good for loading stuff into prams, bikes and so on, but i think the new tarago has 1 more extra seat, but too expensive for us,anyway hope everyone had a good mothers day.

I am a proud van driver...and if you had to load and unload a wagon with a d*ckie seat in the drizzle on the mornington peninsula like I used to, you would want a van too!!!
I now drive a mitsubishi delica which is a starwagon, but the 4 wd version!! I love it, my old starwagon was great, but this is a turbo diesel and it is awesome!! More power and better fuel economy, oh and it is an 8 seater (8th one folds up when not being used).

we are looking at them now to buy one and the only thing holding us back is the petrol side of things with one income  the sales rep told me it would cost close to $300 to fill the tank   so im just wondering if you could let me know roughly how much is costs to fill and how long a full tank lasts roughly-sorry if that is personal if you dont want to disclose please pm me!

Can i ask you people who have extra seats in the back of the station wagon who sits in the back ?
How does it work?

With mine, it can hold kids up to 38kg. There is a seated height too, I can't think what it is off the top of my head.
But DD, who is 8.5, comes in under the seated height by a long shot and only weighs 23kg, so she sits back there.
DS2 only weighs 17.5kg, so he is there too. Each side of the seat has it's own anchorage point, so he has his H harness (booster seat wont fit).
When DD gets too tall, I will put DS3 back there if his car seat will fit. Otherwise, DS2 will sit there by himself and the other 3 can just use the back seat.

We were originally told 8 for ours (magna), but the one they installed was a newer model and they never told us the age, just the height and weight.

We have a Pajero Exceed - lovely lovely car but I am 100% positive that it does not cost $300 to fill the tank, I am sure I would have noticed that!!! We've had it for two years, I'll check next time I fill it and let you know :) Lasts about two weeks btw :)
thanks noosamum!!! I thought he was going a bit to the extreme with $300! me thinks he wanted us to buy another car instead

kizmet - I just had a bit of a think about it and it's an 80 litre tank according to the book, so no way does it cost $300 to fill!!!! I just found a receipt in the car for $95 so I think that's a fill up. We have a BP card so I don't really take a whole lot of notice but I would say around $90 - $95 is about right and I get two weeks out of that, with a fair bit of driving (3 kids so we are always on the go  )
Really hope that helps!!

Wow, you do well!! It costs me $75 to fill my Magna (71L tank, but I only ever put 55L in it) and it lasts me 5-6 days.

Yep I have an 80 ltr tank and it also only costs me between $90 & $100 to fill
wow no where near as much as i thought!! thanks guys! Now just need to convince DH :devil6:
And you get 2 weeks out of a full tank! That's amazing! The sales guy told me that it would eat petrol as it was a heavy car...not to self do not go back to that dealership!
Our landcruiser has two petrol tanks- both i think 90lts. It costs us about $90 to fill each tank so it only costs at most almost $200 to fill. I only drive it when i have to- we live close to everything so usually i just walk everywhere-its not unusual for the car to go unused for 4 days or so- and that $200 lasts us over a month. It does chew through it fairly quickly though-uses alot of fuel when we use it if that makes sense.
We have a Tarago we'll have to sell soon (I want to know what vehicle we'll get next that fits at least 9!) that's done us proud - I'd recommend them.
And I understand the "van" thing - I held off as long as I could - but it doesn't drive like a van and fits adults in much more comfortably than some of the other people-movers (I transport students in it all the time - unfortunately, so do my colleagues!).
On hols in Perth last year, our hire car was a Kia Carnival and it is a heck of a lot cheaper and had a bit more versatility with seats etc. It was quite comfy. I don't think that it was quite as fuel efficient as the Tarago but it was okay.

We have many passengers now (having had twins last Sept) and we have looked seriously at buying another car. We currently have a Toyota Prado and it does seat 8 but the eldest child has to climb in the back to get to the seat. Not very becoming 4 a young lady! In any case, we looked at the Chrysler Voyager. For 1, they are quite hard to come buy 2nd hand so we discovered. People love them and hold onto them apparently. We looked at them new but the trade in was embarassing! Van was not our thing either but these voyagers are nice and people always speak well of them. The access in and out is great. Far better than the Tarago which was not even on our list.
Hubby had plans of pimping it up anyway so it would be his pimpmobile!
do any of you have a hyundai santa fe? We are now looking at them or a subaru outback/or forester...anyone know if any of these are good family cars?

We have a Ssang Yong Stavic and we absolutely love it. It's a 7 seater and we got it mainly because of the amount of space it has, as my DH is 6 foot 5 and also because of the great fuel economy on it. :)
We have 2 booster seats and a car seat in ours.
We have a Prado ATM... but I want something with more seats... it only has 8
I was thinking a Transit Van... that can have 14... so we don't have to do 2 trips for car pooling...

I drive a Toyota Torago. We have never had any problems with it and we have had it for nearly 11 years. I am looking at upgrading it hopefully in the near future. It seats 8 people comfortably. We are a family of 6 now:)
My hubby has just gone out and got himself a Toyota Landcruiser, that seats 8 people as well.
Both cars are pretty good. Ive seen the parado's and I think they seat 8 too, we looked at them before we got the landcruiser. Seemed to be alot more squishy especially in the back row of seats. I had my 14 year old sit in the back and her knees were up around her ears.
Make sure you try out all the seats before you buy, that way you know exactly what your getting. Some cars are very deceiving.

Good point! My inlaws have a Subaru Forester and the back seat is VERY uncomfortable. Sitting in it for 4 days on the way to Brisbane and back was hell, lol.

My Il's have the santa fe, and love it. But then some friends who usually drive a holden wagon, found the one they hired last week on hols to be really gutless. Can't say I have driven it to tell you either way. It is quite comfortble with 3 kids in the back though, as they take my 3 eldest out in it.

Hmmm. friend has forester, will be a bit squishy when she has her third. We have outback, could also be squishy when we get to three, but both are do-able and great cars.
