My husband is in the RAN (Royal Australian Navy). He signed a 6 year contract and has served about three and a half years

He has done one Persian Gulf trip (6 months last year) and lots of 2-3 month exercise's and deployments

My DH is in the Air Force, he was in the army for 9 years and then moved across to the airforce 2 years ago.

He is away at the moment and does lots of trips away...some times we dont get told when he is coming home till a few days before he does come back.

My partner is an infantry soldier in the Army. He has been in for 6 years.

He's been deployed twice, East Timor for 6 months & Afghanistan for 7 months.

My husband is in the Army, he has served for 9 years. Like many defence members he is very travelled having been to East Timor, Iraq, Afghanistan, Solomons, Pakistan and Aceh. We've been lucky enough to have him home for 6 months straight due to an injury that required surgery, but he's back online next month... Family time is precious!

My DH is in the Navy and has been for 12 yrs. He has done 2 6 month trips to the persian gulf. The past 2 yrs he was away for 16 months in blocks of 3-4 month deployments. Plus countless courses etc. For a while he was only ever home for 2 weeks and then away for 2 months.

It can be a tricky life but we defence partners are a breed of our own

I didn't participate in the defence positives/negatives thread but would agree with the ladies who said overall the positives outweigh the negatives. Have been to places and met people that I never would have if I had a civilian hubby. Suspect it may get harder now we have a bub & I'm not working.

DH is in the army and has been for 11 years - pretty much straight out of school and was in the army when I met him.

He has been on deployments to Timor & Iraq not to mention all the time spent away on courses/exercises but I'm going to get to keep him home for a while too due to injury. He needs an ankle reconstruction and minimum 12 months until he can be classed as medically fit. :yelclap:

Oh, at this point, think mine has been in the longest...

He is in the Navy, joined up at 17, has been in for 20 years (except for the whole 7.5 months he was out last year before they took him back, LOL). He will be in now until retirement age (about to be increased to 60 years, then he can do another 5 years as a permanent reservist if he chooses).

Has been to both gulf wars, 3 times to first one, once to this one, East Timor, and loves it!!

Hi, my hubby is in the RAAF and has served almost 18 years. We've survived 4 overseas deployments, 2 to East Timor, 1 to the Solomon Islands and 1 to Malaysia & countless exercises and courses. It's been really hard at times, but we survive on love.

My DP is in the Army and has been for 2 years now. We live in Darwin, our first posting. He hasn't been on any deployments yet but will probably soon, this year or next.

My partner has been in the army for 15 years in October this year, he joined the day after his 17th birthday. He has just signed on to do another 2 years.
He has had 3 trips to timor and many jobs away from home on Aboriginal communities, not to mention all the courses.
We have been very lucky though, in the past 3 years he has only had 4 trips away and not for more than 6 weeks at a time. (not that they have not tried to send him away over sears 3 times but we have had some personal reasons to keep him home).
He is currently away at the moment though.

My husband is in the Navy, we have been together now for 9 years ( since high school) and he has been in the navy for 8 of those years.

He has been away a lot last year about 7 to 8 months with a long stint of 6 months. I love the life style but it can be very hard. Since leaving home (Melbourne) I have never lived close to family or Friends again. I'm not really a community minded person ( I don't like joining in very much) and so usually just find friends, people to chat to through work (I work in banking) We live in Newtown (Sydney) at the moment and I love it, it has everything that I could want or need and I've become very comfy here. We are about to move to Perth with a newborn and although a little nervous I'm sure that Perth with have it's perks...

My husband is amazingly supportive and understanding, I'm sure this makes a huge difference when it comes to having a very long distance relationship.
