Guess what my Spotlight has PUL!!!
It's called wetlook Nylon, and it is PUL, but the PUL side is the right side, and it's coloured, really bright green, blue etc. I found one that wasn't too overbearing, a mushroom colour on both sides. It's a bit stretchier than the normal stuff, but i'm using it as a hidden, or extra layer with 300 wt MM fleece, that has been appliqued, just for extra support in case, and it's working fine.
Not really cheaper than the normal PUL though it was $15.95 per metre. And the colours were pretty full on

really....i might pop in and have a look to see if mine has it on friday.
i use usualy hid my pul, so colours dont really faze me but how handy would it be, to be able to nick down to the shop on a rainy day and come home and make a nappy or 2.

Its actually called wetlook vinyl but it is nylon and waterproof material together.
It looks as though it would be waterproof to me,its just like pul but stretchier.

Ooooo ok, then why did the moron on the phone say it's not waterproof and looks like swimwear? Idiot:banghead:
So it's exact name is "wetlook vinyl"? How much is it per metre? Need as much info as possible as I'll ring the other store tomorrow, and if they have it I'll go down there:yelclap:

 sorry I always get the names of things wrong - I almost got it right :o :p
At least Jac could find it with my muddled description :p
It's not made to be waterproof I don't think, but it's a PUL coating so it should work. Definately works instead of a second layer of fleece, I haven't tried it on it's own though

I found a fabric shop it sells Poly Laminate I think it's called, she said it's waterproof and is used for 'hidden' layering and things.... for 12.99 a metre for fluro yellow and a nice blue, and for sea green it was 15 a metre....
would it work?? would it work out cheaper to use that or PUL from online.
i suspect wetlook vinyl would have a vinyl coating, rather than polyurethane, but i haven't found anywhere yet that tells me the details, so happy to be proved wrong.

Someone had obviously asked what the coating was on this fabric at my local Spotlight because they had hand written on the tag polyurethane laminate. I was sus when I saw it the first time, because it didn't say PUL on the tag, but it looked at felt exactly the same. The next time I went they had written it on the tag. It is a little strange as I said before the coating is coloured instead of clear LOL

I found it:smiliedance:
I am 99% sure it's PUL :smiliedance:
I swear it's the EXACT same type as used in Peapods nappies:yes:
The laminate is on a polyester knit, and the laminate is coloured, not clear or white.
I made a nappy today with it, it's a gorgeous pink as both the laminate side AND the poly side were hot pink :D
I have little scraps and stuff leftover, if anyone wants to send me their postal addy I can send you a scrap to have a look if you like.
I hope it's the right stuff! A little bit more expensive that buying it bulk from a nappy supplier, but how handy for when you jsut need a bit and also for people just starting out to sew them!!!

if it's PVC it will still 'work' like PUL, it just won't 'breathe' like PUL

Here I am showing my complete ignorance again...
But ex has decided that he'll take me to Spotlight today and shout me some fabric :devil6: so I'm just wondering if anyone can tell me if I can get any of that bamboo or hempy or absorby type stuff from there?
I'm not making nappies, coz to be honest, that's all a bit too complicated for me, but I'm making some cloth menstruals.
I already had a bit of a go this morning, and I'm going to amend the pattern so it makes a bit more sense...
Now I wanna sew up a storm of cloth menstruals. Am thinking of even selling some!

They don't sell hemp or bamboo, but if you were making pads for yourself apperently 100% cotton batting made for quilts - works brilliantly for the absorbancy part. It won't have the antibacterial properties of hemp or bamboo, but it will work

Pobble, I have a few offcuts of bamboo and hemp, enough for 2-3 pads if you want, I'll send them 2 u for nothing if you want
For others, try terry towelling, face washers, they'd be fine for the light days:thumbsup:

unfortunately looking at it won't necessarily tell me much - it can be difficult to tell the difference between polyurethane and polyvinyl laminates just by looking at them. manufacturing specifications from the supplier would probably tell us what it is and I'm guessing the name - wetlook vinyl - is a pretty good clue too. Unfortunately in my expeience Spotlight staff often don't know a lot about their products - I heard recently that someone looking for hemp to make nappies was told that perhaps she could use hessian instead ;) And another person was told that you can't use polar fleece for making nappies ;)
So yeah, without further details from the manufacturer/supplier, I'd be hesitant to assume that it's PUL and not PVC. PVCs often have toxic plasticisers in them and I personally don't like to use that sort of thing on my babies. I remember when I was pregnant with my first baby, and I was working for my dad, who owns a plastic moulding business. They were doing a job that involved moulding plastic that had a PVC vinyl coating on the top of it (heating it and reshaping it) and I wasn't allowed to come out of the air-conditioned office, because of the fumes (they were all wearing masks to mould it). It doesn't inspire me to want to use the stuff! As far as I know, pvc also remains toxic after manufacture (most of it), continues to outgas in the end product, and you may also have the possibility of soluble toxins too in a wet nappy situation...
Shanaynay
15-05-2007, 10:16
PUL has actually been found to have carcinogenic components - many people don't like to put that near their baby either ;)
You're right - Spotlight staff know nothing about their products - hence their naming of wetlook vinyl for PUL.... I assume they call it that because who buys something to make clothes out of something called 'wetlook urethane'
yes, there is a study that shows carcinogenic components in the manufacture of PUL, however no evidence thus far that it is harmful in it's final state, unlike PVC. FWIW, I don't use PUL either, but that's not really what this thread is about, is it?
We could probably disagree until the cows come home about whether it's PUL or PVC.
It's labelled vinyl, the information from my local Spotlight is that it has a PVC laminate. It's illegal to label something incorrectly for sale.
Shall we move onto which Spotlight has the most knowledgeable staff??
Just in case you weren't aware that there are lots of different types of laminating film that can be bonded to fabric, here's a link from Fabrite (http://www.fabrite.com/serv_adhesive.html) that tells you a bit about the range of laminating that they do. As you can see, urethane is not the only type of film that can be used.

The tag on the wetlook vinyl at my Spotlight states that it is PVC coated, i was there today having a squiz for myself.

Yep - the wetlook vinyl is PVC
Shanaynay
15-05-2007, 19:08
I'm still sure it's PUL - labelled PVC or not ;)
But in any case - I think it's great that there is something at Spotlight that can be bought to use in nappies or pads :smiliedance: It's very discouraging for people to want to make their own nappies for their bubbas and to be able to get nothing IRL  .... not everyone likes to buy online..... some people don't even have internet access....
....Sorry Bek, but I just have to speak up, I really find your posts really rude and this isn't the first time, you are really condescending and I don't understand why

i have to agree with you and wish i had the guts to do it myself,
their are so many other ways to say something and also the good old "nothing nice to say, say nothing at all"
i understand that you belive it is PVC, but others think it is PUL, it in no way effects you, by what others think, and trying to push your opinion on others will not get the result you were looking for.
just a simple "i think its PVC" would have been enough
Gee, I'm sorry you feel that way
I'm simply trying to prevent people reading this thread and going out to buy something on the basis of what is said here, and then finding out that it is not what they were led to believe it was.
The 'tone' may be the result of many attempts to rephrase my posts to not be offensive.
I feel a bit like this: :banghead:
maybe it shows?

There you go again
As I said it is not just this thread.
I've felt a few times quite offended by you when you couldn't possible be trying to prevent anyone from being misled
But that's ok, I just did want to let you know how I felt, I've done so:thumbsup:
I feel a giant whooshbird flying by...
Something's labelled "wetlook vinyl", it has a label saying it's PVC, but people insist that their "opinion" is that it is PUL, and that Bek is rude for talking about her "opinion" that the fabric labelled PVC is probably, well, PVC?
Musta missed something!
