I am SLOWLY building up my mcn (I only have 5 at the moment) and decided to go cheapo cloth until I get more mcn, and use mcn when out so I really wont be using sposies hardly at all.
So I went and bought a pack of terry towelling nappies, a pack of snappies and I have just got el cheapo covers till I get more money. I am a bit worried about how this will go. Bubs is 12 months old, and a real wriggler so I dont have a very easy model to practice on:rolleyes:
The snappis seem hard to use- i guess they take some practice. I was trying to attach them to the towelling but they wouldnt stick. But that was before I washed them (Am prewashing them now). Dont know if that would make a difference.
Is there any body else who uses terry towelling? Any tips/advice would be appreciated heaps!
Oh, and also on the pack it says washing instructions are hot water- is this always necessary? Do you wash them the same as MCN????? HMmmm sooo many questions. I will look in the cloth info section too.
Thanx gals, wish me luck:yes:

i also used terry flats with my ds 1 and ds 2 - they were relativley easy to use at the time - i hated the idea of disposable and they always had wet clothes...
you just need to prefold the nappy before hand - make sure you get the boy or girl fold ... and have good pilchers ..... i was actually using my terry flats on dd who is only 3 months old and then i was and still am putting pockets over the terry flats.... it was working quite well...
I use flats, mostly flannelette but also some terries when DD has a sleep.
I just wash them the same as my mcns, I usually wash in warm water. Occasionally I soak in napisan if there are stains that aren't coming out.
Have you had a look at The Nappy Lady website? They have instructions for heaps of different folds on there.
Oh, and make sure you stretch the snappis :) Just stretch them while you are watching tv or something. You can use them without stretching but they will be heaps easier to put on after they have been stretched a bit.
before i discovered mcn, i used terry flats...sometimes i boost it (most of the time i dont!) and i put polar fleece liner that i made to keep little bottom dry no matter how drenched the nappy was
I used terry flats before I had any mcn with my girl and then again with bub but this time with soakers instead of fluffies. I still use them on bub. I make up my own folds :o and just boost with a flannelette folded and then with a snappi. It needs to be tight on bub cos he is so skinny.
Nappy Folds (http://www.thenappylady.co.uk/Advice/Instructions.asp?InstructionID=2)
I used terry flats for both of my girls until they were about 10mths old. If you have a fold that fits the bub well then terry flats are great.
Snappis - make sure you pre-stretch them. I loved my snappis, sooooooo much better than pins! They should grab onto the terry material pretty easily. Do one side first, then the other side followed by the bottom (this is how I did it, others may do it slightly different).
I'm not sure how you'll go with the cheapo covers. I guess the plus is you don't really have to worry about newborn explosion, so the covers aren't being used to help hold things in. It's probably the breathability that will be the issue. If you're just around home you could really get away without using the cover, probably just use it for sleeps.
Washing is just the same as you would for MCN. Store bought terry flats (as in Target, Big W, etc) would still have instructions dating back to the soaking days. Ignore them, dry pail and wash like an MCN.

Thanx everyone:thumbsup:
Just a quick question... This may be a dumb question, but is polar fleece the same thing as polyester? Only I have a bunny rug that I cut up for liners and I thought it was polar fleece and it says on the tag that it is polyester... is it the same or different??
Polar fleece is made from polyester (essentially plastic )

Ok, I was just wondering how a polar fleece liner in a nappy would keep bubs skin dry if the water just sits on the surface of it??? Sorry if stupid questions!
I think 2 layers would repel but one layer would be breathable - so the moisture can seep through. Not sure how it works :s

No stupid questions:no: :)
I don't know the technical details as to why but the polarfleece allow moisture through but not back through again, hence keeping skin dry. Does that make sense?!

yes, thanx grem it does. I was just a bit confused as to how polar fleece can keep bubs dry because i put some under some water and the drops of water just sat on the fleece and rolled around, and didnt seep thru at all. So I thought it would just be wet on bubs skin... but maybe it seeps thru eventually not coming back thru the fabric onto bubs skin?
Man, this is getting complicated lol
Does polar fleece have a 'right' & 'wrong' side? One side lets water thru, the other repels? Did I read that somewhere or am I thinking of another fabric? If I didn't just dream that theory up, then maybe that could be the answer...too many fabric types when it comes to nappies, I'm all confused...
If it is thin polar fleece, the liquid should go through the fabric, into the nappy, and the fleece is left feeling dry. If the fleece is too thick, it will repel the liquid (that is why fleece can be used as an inner and an outer of a nappy). HTH
there's a great explanation of how fleece works here (http://www.ozclothnappies.org/info.html#polar)
