DH has kindly passed his flu onto me  which has given me a fever/ sinus/ blocked and runny nose/ blocked ears/ sore throat - I'm wondering what I can take to relieve the symptoms, as I'm still breastfeeding? I can't sleep at night because I can't breathe...I'm taking fenugreek which is supposed to help but it's not doing much.

DH has some Sudafed PE here which has NO pseudoephedrine in it - it has phenylephrine instead and I think it also has an antihistamine - but the Medicines Helpline is closed so I can't check with them if it's OK for me to use...?

I might have to resort to using DS's Fess for noses

Ring your local pharmacy they will tell you what is safe. I know all i used to use was vicks on my back and stick my head in a bowl of hot water to clear my head drink lots of honey and lemon etc
I know that Robuttusin (i cant spell) is a safe cough mixture to take there is one that you cannot take...as there are about 4 of these for colds and flu. I took that when my throat felt like razor blades.
Get your dh to go to the chemist or give them a call first to see what you can take there is nothing worse when you feel so crappy and have to look after a baby as well :) Hope you feel better soon

Claratyne is an antihystamine that is safe for breastfeeding, so I'd be taking that as it will help with the inflammation of your sinus passages.

I have chronic sinusitis, so the things that help me are:

REALLY hot showers (the steam clears sinus'), taking steam inhalation preparations (a couple of drops of eucalyptus oil in boiling water and a shallow, wide bowl, put a towel over your head and breath in the steam), saline nasal spray used as often as you need to, paracetamol and panadeine are both safe during breastfeeding to help relieve the pain.

HTH :)

I've got the flu right now and so has bub :(
I've been giving him infant dimetap and fess drops and infant panadol (not all at once!) and I've been taking panadol mainly, with some cold and flu tabs when necessary. They do have pseudoephedrine in them so I am not taking them much, but I haven't noticed any probs.

I have the flu at the moment and Ella too, I have been putting the vaporiser on in her room with eucalyptus oil in it. Works like a charm!!! I have a second vaporiser for my room for me too as it helps keep coughs and asthma away.
My Doc gave me Amoxil rather than cold n flu tabs as Amoxil has no risk involved whereas the research into the effects of coldnflu tabs on infants can't rule out risks completely.

I have always been adviced by my GP and chemist not to take any over the counter medications as they do not have enough information to regard them as safe for BFing.

That is interesting about the Claratyne I never knew that.

The garlic/horseradish/vit c is really good it also contains fenugreek which will help increase your milk supply as well as break down the mucous.

And all the suggestion from Tam-I-Am are great.
