Ok now i've got both terry towelling (tt) & flannalette flats & the flannalette dont seem as absorbant. Does anyone use a booster with their flannalette flats?

Also, they are soo much bigger is there a special fold variation to do. I do the origami fold with the tt, would i do the same with the flannalette?

Thanks

On one of the other nappy threads, someone mentioned this site:

seem to have heaps of folds, so maybe that will help? Good luck!

RB I might be getting all my nappy info mixed up in my head, but did someone say Flannelette need a few washes before being as absorbent?? Or did I just make that up?

I think lots of fabrics, including cotton terry and flannelette (sp?) and other blends with cotton fibres in them need several good washes before use to remove fabric manufacturing residues that make them somewhat repellant.

Hemp, as an alternative, doesn't have the manufacturing residue problem, it is just a fibre that needs to be well broken in to allow moisture to be drawn to the core of each fibre, making it as absorbent as it is.

Another thing I have found is that flannelette doesn't catch wee as quickly as terry as terry has a greater surface area to catch with all those loops - hence less leaks and explosions! And terry is often a heavier weight dry nappy - ie. if you weigh a clean dry terry square and a clean dry flannelette square, you might find that the terry one is heavier thus there is more cotton in it to hold more moisture.

Yep I would use the same fold for both the flano and terry.

Don't use fabric softener on the Flannelette nappies. It makes them less absorbent.

They also do better after a couple of washes.

I know this has been said before but I will say it again.

Vinegar can be used in place of fabric softener. :D

don't use fabric softner on ANY nappies - fabric softner works by coating the fibres to reduce static and the fibres clumping together. but the coating often builds up and reduces absorbancy, on nappies as well as towels. Vinegar can help to do some of the job that fabric softner does, but is natural and won't build up.
