calling all philanthropic Brisbane bubbhubbers...

Just thought there might be a couple of people interested in this fundraising film night I heard about today, happening at the Schonell Cinema at the University of Queensland (St Lucia) on Saturday January 14 at 6.30pm.

It's to raise money for Langri Tangpa (a tibetan buddhist centre) in Newmarket on Brisbane's northside. Among other things, Langri Tangpa run courses, teach meditation and support the nearby Karuna hospice for terminally ill patients. They rely solely on donations and fundraisers such as this.

The film is "Words of My Teacher", a documentary about Khyentse Norbu, who is a well-known teacher of tibetan buddhism and a film-maker (he made "The Cup", which i recommend if you haven't seen it, and "Travellers and Magicians").

It's $15 ($13 concession) which includes supper (starting at 5.30pm) - not sure what 'supper' means, but whatever it is, it'll probably be vego i would think!!! :p

If u want more info u can e-mail Eddie Peat on info@langritangpa.org (info@langritangpa.org)

So, if you can organise a baby-sitter, see you there!

Rachel :)

If I lived in Brissy then I'd be there with bells on! Speaking of Buddhism, I saw 3 Khmer Monks today in the mall - always looking immensely serene! :)

Hey JB
They always do don't they. Is it the Khmer monks who wear the lovely maroon robes??? I know the tibetan monks wear the saffron coloured robes. In zen (my tradition) the monks and nuns wear grey or black robes (very exciting, but minimalist!!) :)

They were wearing Orange robes. I found this - The color of modern robes varies from community to community (orange is characteristic for southeast Asian Theravada groups, maroon in Tibet, gray in Korea, etc.).

I just know they're Khmer because that's the biggest group of Temples in Northern Adelaide! :) They are currently building a new temple too and at one of the other ones they have the most gorgeous statue of buddha (made from marble???).

Some nutter Christian group burned their temple a couple of years ago and of course they did not have insurance (which is in line with Karma etc). We know it was a Christian group because they were arrested after bragging about it in front of the congregation! :(

in true buddhist style, they were probably very transcendent about it too!!!!! :)

The bad karma's all theirs (the arsonists that is!!)

do you remember a few years ago when the Taliban blew up all those 2000 year old buddhist temple ruins in Afghanistan???? Well, there was a bit of debate among buddhists around the world about just how transcendent they should be about such a vile act! in true form, the zen buddhists got over it quite quickly!!!

:D

From an Archeological point of view I screamed! And I'm all in favour of piecing them back together! But then again that's what I do (study ancient architecture/archeology etc).

I think the community was more upset after pouring so much money into the temple! :(
