OzCloth Nappies have done it again, having found a great study that goes to show disinfectants aren't all they're cracked up to be;)

Well done to the wonderful team at OCN:)

Sunlight

Many areas in Australia have an abundance of sunlight for drying nappies. Even if there is cloud cover, ultraviolet light is poorly filtered by cloud (that's why we still get skin damage), and will bleach and sanitise your nappies, albeit more slowly.

We've just spotted this study, which is of interest. The authors used a towel to wipe college eating tables for three days, loading them with bacteria including E. coli (a common fecal bacterium), Staph. areus (golden staph), Proteus, Bacillus, Klebsiella and Pseudomonas. Some of these bacteria have a tendency to be resistant to antibiotics and disinfectants, thanks to overuse of these substances.

They then washed the towels in detergent and sun-dried them. Tests of the towels after sun drying showed that the bacterial numbers and types were reduced to acceptable levels. They then compared this to disinfectant use - and disinfectant came off second best.

There was a study done like this quite a while ago, just goes to show how evil thoes UV rays are since they kill germs

Oh, and did you know (actually I'm not positive this is true) that it doesn't even have to be sunny to get rid of stains and sanistise? It works even on a cloudy day because it is the UV that does the work....

It's fantastic, isn't it?!

I have a hard time convincing family that UV does do the job. They all just think I'm a bit feral for not using napisan! But I don't see dentists using napisan to sanitize their equipment.
What do they use? A box flodded with UV light

Yup - if you read the first paragraph of the quoted OP it actually says that;) : "Even if there is cloud cover, ultraviolet light is poorly filtered by cloud (that's why we still get skin damage), and will bleach and sanitise your nappies, albeit more slowly."

Lol!! Yep, that stuff is feral. It's poison!! Corrosive poison. I wouldn't put it in my mouth so I wouldn't put it on my kids' sensitive skin and expect them to wee in it

I had TOTALLY forgotten about this. My last baby they didn't do cloth nappies anymore, asked you to bring in disposables:thumbsdown: . But the first time I was there we had buckets at our beds for drypailing!

They offered cloth at the hospital when I had my first. They had a huge thing (you know laundry basket for dirties). Then I got a shock when they gave me half a pack of H disposables when I had my second (and third) bub.

In both the hospitals I had the girls in (SA and RPA Sydney) they did cloth. They had just those big hospital laundry bags that you just threw them into.
I think hospitals just do boiling hot washes don't they?

Yep, same, here in SA they give you H. Disposies, all done up in pretty present, I think there is about 10 in there, as well as as many as you need for the stay..
They also supply flannie flats, and you put them in the laundry bag thing when done with them, although they dont advertise that cloth is allowed, its written in the book that they supply cloth, but on the list of what to bring, it says 1 pack of sposies.. I only took mcn in, but used their flats with my covers..

Just a question, sorry if its OT, but we have just had 10 days of rain, so no hanging outside, they are dry, and today is a moderately sunny day, can I put them outside dry to sanitise?? or would I have to wash again, for the sun to do its magic, sorry for the bimbo question, but as soon as I saw the sun was sort of out, I thought, hmmmm, wonder if I can get those nappies stains out like that today??TIA Jodie

i asked about cloth cause i wanted them to show me how to fold them and what not but the nurse said they dont do that anymore :(

Just put them out on the line for awhile. I do this occasionally if I've had to tumble dry a bit (like all of last week!).
